Adult Swimming (styled as [adult swimming] and often shortened to [as] ) is adult-oriented adult programming block from American children's Cartoon Network cable network. It is broadcast every night from 8 am-6am (Eastern and Pacific Time). It is programmed by Williams Street Productions, a subsidiary of Turner Broadcasting System, which also developed two other programming blocks for Cartoon Network: Toonami (which later became the block on Adult Swim in 2012) and Miguzi.

Debuting in 2001, Adult Swim serves as a Cartoon Network night identity, and was established as an alternative program during the late hours of the night when the main target audience of Cartoon Networks, children between the ages of 6-15, usually sleeps. Most of the common content of Adult Swim is known for its experimental, obscene, unorthodox, rough, dry, and improvisational humor, along with seemingly cheap animations, and often odd presentations. In 2005, the block was given Nielsen's own ranking report from Cartoon Network for targeting separate demographics. This block features a variety of animations and live-action performances including the original program, a syndicated series primarily composed of Fox animation programming (ie King of the Hill , The Cleveland Show , < American Dad! , Family Guy , and Bob's Burgers ), short films, original video animations and anime, generally with minimal edits for content.

In the United States, Adult Swim has often aired adult animation features, anime, mockumentaries, comedy sketches, live action, and pilots. Events may have sexual themes, honest sexual discussion, nudity, strong language, and graphic violence; in other words, programs that are deemed inappropriate if aired during the day on Cartoon Network, when children will watch. While the network features comedy and dramatic programs of all kinds, many of its programs are aesthetic, transgressive, improvisational, and surrealist. Thus, Adult Swim has been a source of conflict, with some saying that it is too controversial, while others note that its ability to question norms brings the level of surrealism and experimentalism received. Adult Swimming has been contracted with various studios known for their production in absurd and shock comedy.

Like Cartoon Network, Adult Swim reaches through various services totaling 94 million American households.

History

Creation and development

Cartoon Network's original head programmer, Mike Lazzo, contains (and continues to operate) Adult Swim. This block grew out of Cartoon Network's previous efforts to deliver content appropriate for teenagers and young adults who may be watching the channel after 11 pm (ET/PT). The network began experimenting with a late-night program by displaying anthology events such as ToonHeads , The Bob Clampett Show , The Tex Avery Show , Late Night Black and White , and O, Canada , all of which feature unclassified classic cartoon shorts, and blocks like Toonami Midnight Run. In various interviews, it has been stated that at the time, one-third of Cartoon Network audiences were adults.

During the 1990s, prime time animations aimed at adults became popular due to the success of Fox's Liquid Television , Beavis and Butt-Head , Aeon Flux , The Brothers Grunt , Duckman , The Critic , The Maxx , King of the Hill , Daria , South Park , Coastal Ghost Room to the Coast , Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist , Futurama Oblong , Employee: Dilmy Animation Series Dilbert , Mission Hill , Home Movies , and Family Guy , and more; as well as more general-oriented animated series like The Powerpuff Girls , Dexter Laboratories , The Ren & amp; Stimpy Show , Animaniacs , Rocko Modern Life , The Angry Beavers , Johnny Bravo , Dragon Ball Z , Pokémon  © mon , and SpongeBob SquarePants , among others, are gathering strong adult followers.

Space Ghost Coast to Coast , Cartoon Network's first deployment into the original program, was made in 1994 specifically for late-night adult audiences. The series was created by Mike Lazzo's Ghost Planet Industries, which eventually became Williams Street Studios, producer and adult Swim program.

Between 4:00 am and 5:00 am on December 21 and December 30, 2000 (when the Space Coast Space Coast was on hiatus), several new Williams Street series made unreleased "stealth" premiere. Sealab 2021 , Harvey Birdman, Lawyer at Law , Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Brak Show all aired without notice ; the official schedule lists events as "Special Programming". Prior to that, at Entertainment Weekly, it was stated that Michael Ouweleen's next project worked on Harvey Birdman, the Attorney at Law Pilot with J.J. Sedelmaier. In an interview in 1999, the indie pop rock band Calamine said they had recorded the theme song for Sealab 2021. While hosting pitches for various adult cartoons, Lazzo realized the potential to package them as adult-focused blocks. Different names were considered, including "ibiso", which Spain said to "stop", and "Parental Warning", but he eventually settled on "Adult Swim".

In June 2001, TV Guide recorded an interview with former president of Cartoon Network, Betty Cohen. He stated there was a new programming block coming out in September aimed at mature audiences. During this month at Cartoon Network Confidential, "Cartoon Network's best original cartoon and embarrassing animation to distinguish adults" in New York City, the upcoming episode of Coastal Coast Ghost Space titled "Kentucky Nightmare", a stealth pilot from December, Captain Linger , and the episode Movies played for free. The screening is part of the Toyota Comedy Festival. On Saturday, July 21, 2001, the Space Ghost Coast to Coast panel at San Diego Comic Con has a trivia game where the winner wins the promotional CD that has the theme song for the upcoming Adult Swim Event.. Everyone present got a free Adult Swim T-shirt packed to look like a roll of bandages that can be carried by the lifeguard.

At Comic Con, spectators should see upcoming event clips and choose what events they want to see as a peek. Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law is the winner and the pilot is screened. The Leave It to Brak episodes of "War Next Door" and Space Ghost Coast to Coast episodes "The Justice Hole" were also screened, as well as clips for the "Sweet to Brak" episode. In an interview on creativemac.com on July 25, 2001, J.J. Sedelmaier talks about working on a Harvey Birdman pilot, Attorney at Law . On August 12, the first commercial advertisement of the new block was aired on Cartoon Network. Around this time, an outgoing press tool featured towel and promotional CDs. Another press kit designed as a first aid kit comes with a VHS promo with info on all shows. Access Hollywood is also highlighting the upcoming premiere. Print ads appear in the August issue of Entertainment Weekly . On August 31st, Adult Swim.com was officially launched.

2001-03

Adult Swim was officially launched on Sunday, September 2, 2001, at 10 pm (EST), with original premiere of "Home Movie episode" Directed Cut ", which was saved before it aired on its original network, UPN. Cartoon Network bought five episodes of original UPN and ordered eight more to finish the season. The series' first season is animated at Squigglevision, however, the next season is done in flash animation. The first anime broadcast on the block also aired on its launch night, Cowboy Bebop . Aqua Teen Hunger Force debuted on the block on September 9th, with episode "Escape from Leprechaupolis". This block goes on Sunday night from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am, with the same repeat of the block on Thursday night.

These programs may contain some material that many parents do not like for children and may include intense violence, sexual situations, harsh language and suggestive dialogue. "

The original Adult Swim bumper featured in the show features footage of elderly people swimming in public pools, eating, exercising, and doing other pool related activities. The logo is the words "Adult Swim" in all uppercase, which is displayed after the freezing frame of the recording. Sometimes they are even displayed in reverse. The original block theme music, entitled "D-Code," is a remix of "Mambo Gallego" done by the Melbourne Dust Devil musician, originally played by Latin jazz musician Tito Puente, Sr. When the event is displayed on TV, in the upper right corner of the red case the red screen will say Adult Swim. In the winter of 2001, other Adult CDs were available for free for anyone who bought the 28th edition of Hitch Magazine and the same CD came with the 29th edition. As the Saturday night bloc made its debut on February 23, 2002, it's known as Adult Swim Action . Various anime programs are displayed in blocks from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm ET. The latest bumper cards have the text "[adult swimming]" or "[as]" somewhere in the place photos - often by road or road signs around the world. One of the more famous bumps is "cus anime is s uck"; this begins because someone on the Adult Swim message board complains about anime programming on the block, and since the message board will not allow the word "annoying" to be written, Adult Swim turns it into a running joke and sells T-shirts with the phrase written on it.

At certain times during the night, the mound will provide a programming line for the upcoming date.
