Autodesk, Inc. is an American multinational software company that makes software for architectural, engineering, construction, manufacturing, media, and entertainment industries. Autodesk is headquartered in San Rafael, California, and features galleries by customers in the San Francisco building. The company has offices worldwide, with US locations in Northern California, Oregon, Colorado, Texas and New England in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, as well as Canada locations in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta.
The company was founded in 1982 by John Walker, co-author of the first version of AutoCAD, the company's leading computer-aided design (CAD) software. The AutoCAD and Revit software is primarily used by architects, engineers, and structural designers to design, design, and model buildings and other structures. Autodesk software has been used in many areas, from One World Trade Center to Tesla electric cars.

The MEA Division also develops and manages software for the Construction industry, including BIM360, Advance Steel, and NavisWorks (acquired 2007) product tools; Infrastructure industries, including Civil 3D, and InfraWorks; and the MEP industry, including CADm Fabrication. Autodesk Services Marketplace's offer helps its clients train their teams in the MEA Industry. Projects that have used software from AEC Autodesk divisions include the NASA Ames building, the San Francisco Bay Bridge, the Shanghai Tower, and the One World Trade Center New York.
Genetic engineering
Autodesk Life Sciences is a toolkit that can be developed for genetic engineering. It visualizes the DNA code (Molecule Viewer), and has a tool for writing DNA code (genetic constructor). This tool allows work at the molecular level, rather than nucleotase-level (A, C, G, T) constructs.

Products discontinued
Autodesk's first flagship product was AutoCAD, a computer-aided design application designed to run on systems known as "microcomputers" at the time, including those running the 8-bit CP/M operating system and two new 16-bit systems, the Victor 9000 and IBM Personal Computer (PC). This tool allows users to create detailed technical drawings, and is affordable by many smaller design, engineering, and architecture firms.
Release 2.1 AutoCAD, released in 1986, includes AutoLISP, the default Lisp language programming interpreter originally based on XLISP. This opens the door for third-party developers to expand AutoCAD functionality, to address a wide range of vertical markets, strengthening AutoCAD's market penetration.
After AutoCAD Release 13, the company stopped supporting the Unix environment and Apple Macintosh platform. After AutoCAD Release 14 (R13 was the last DOS & Unix release), first shipped in 1997, Autodesk discontinued development under DOS, and focused exclusively on Microsoft Windows.
AutoCAD has evolved into the most widely used CAD program for non-specialized 2D applications. The original file format written by AutoCAD, DXF and DWG, is also widely used for interoperability of CAD data.
In 1989, Autodesk's sales became over $ 100,000,000 after just four years of operation.
In the 1990s, with the purchase of Softdesk in 1997, Autodesk began developing a special version of AutoCAD, targeted for a broad industry segment, including architecture, civil engineering, and manufacturing. As such, Autodesk can not continue to act against copyright infringement against Vernor, who is attempting to resell versions of the software used on eBay. The decision was submitted to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which reversed the lower court ruling, denied Vernor's right to resell the Autodesk software on eBay due to Autodesk's inalienable license restrictions. In October 2011, the US Supreme Court let Circuit Court of Appeal decision 9.
Autodesk introduced the current logo at the TED conference in Long Beach, California on February 26, 2013.
Autodesk CFD (formerly Autodesk Simulation CFD) includes modeling and modeling of thermal modeling for architectural and MEP applications.
