History

After resigning as a lobbyist for the cable industry, Freeport, a native of Illinois, Robert L. Johnson decided to launch his own cable television network. Johnson will soon get a $ 15,000 loan and a $ 500,000 investment from media executive John Malone to start the network. The network, called Black Entertainment Television (BET), was launched on January 25, 1980. It was initially broadcast for two hours a week as a programming block on Madison Square Garden Sports Network (which will change their name to USA Network three months after BET launch). (It will not be until 1983 that BET becomes a full channel), the network's lineup consists of music videos and reruns of the popular black sitcom.

BET launched the news program, BET News , in 1988, with Ed Gordon as its anchor. Gordon later hosted other special programs and specials on BET, such as Black Men Speak Out: The Aftermath , related to the 1992 Los Angeles riot, and repeated interviews, Conversations with Ed Gordon

In 1991, the network became the first black-controlled TV company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Beginning in the late 1990s, the network expanded with the launch of a digital cable network: what is now a common channel of interest. BET Her was originally launched as BET on Jazz (later known as BET Jazz and BET J), originally made for performing jazz related programming, black jazz musician; in 1998, the company merged into a joint venture with Starz (owned by John Malone's Liberty Media) to launch a multiplex service from premium channels featuring African-oriented films called BET Movies: Starz! 3 (later renamed Black Starz after BET exited the company after its purchase by Viacom, owner of Starz rival Showtime, and now known as Starz InBlack). In 2001, the network lost its status as a black-owned business when it was purchased by the $ 3 billion Viacom media conglomerate. In 2005, Johnson retired from the network, handing his title as president and chief executive officer to BET's former vice president, Debra L. Lee.

In 2007, the network has launched two more music-oriented networks, BET Hip-Hop and BET Gospel. BET also launched the original batch of programming at the moment, including the reality show Baldwin Hills and Hell Date, the competition shows the Sunday Best, and the town hall-look style discussion Hip Hop vs. America . BET president of entertainment Reginald Hudlin resigned from the network on September 11, 2008. He was later replaced by Stephen Hill, who is also the program's executive vice president and musical talent. BET announced in March 2010 that Ed Gordon will return to the network to host "a variety of news and special programs."

In 2017, it was announced that Stephen Hill, Programming President and Zola Mashariki, EVP Head of Original Programming resigned. In the awakening of this news, Connie Orlando, Special SVP, Music Programming, and News, served as Head of Interim Program, according to chairman and CEO Debra Lee.

This block airs as a late night infomercial replacement, whose network has not aired since 1997; BET is one of a handful of cable channels and one of Viacom's only two networks that have stopped infomercials broadcasting (Nick's network sister on Nite runs infomercials in several overnight slots from 1987 to 1998, with series broadcasts that day since then). In early 2017, the Christian programming block changed its name to BET Rejoice .

Criticism

Various people have protested against the elements of BET programming and action, including rapper Public Enemy Chuck D, journalist George Curry, author Keith Boykin, comic book creator Christopher Priest, filmmaker Spike Lee, professor of finance Syracuse University, Dr. Boyce Watkins, former NFL player Burgess Owens, and cartoonist Aaron McGruder (who, in addition to a number of important references throughout his series, The Boondocks, made two special episodes, The Hunger Strike and The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show ", criticizing the channel). As a result, BET strongly censor suggestive content of the video it is displaying, often with entire verses and scenes removed from certain rap videos.

Many intellectuals in the African American community maintain that BET perpetuates and justifies racism by influencing the stereotype held by African Americans, as well as by influencing the psyche of its young audiences through bombing against the negative image of African Americans.

Following the death of civil rights leader Coretta Scott King in 2006, BET broadcasts its regularly scheduled music video program, instead of covering King's funeral directly as CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and BET competitor TV One and Black Family Channel. BET sites broadcast live funerals, while channels regularly broadcast recordings, 60-second reports from funerals by senior news correspondent Andre Showell. Michael Lewellen, BET's senior vice president for corporate communications, defended the decision: "We are weighing a number of different options, in the end, we chose to offer a different experience for BET audiences." Lewellen also said that BET received about "two dozen" phone calls and "some" emails that criticized BET for not showing a live funeral king. On the eve of the funeral, February 7, 2006, BET broadcast the special award Coretta Scott King: Married to Mission , and BET repeats this on the following Sunday, February 12. Showell organizes a program featuring a highlight of the funeral, Coretta Scott King: Celebrating His Spirit , which is broadcasted on the same day. In the 2007 convention, the National Association of Black Journalists gave the BET Thumbs Down Award not to broadcast King's funeral directly.

The New York Times reports that Rev. Delman L. Coates and his organization Enough Have led weekend weekend protests outside BET executives against what they claim to be the negative stereotypes of blacks perpetuated by music videos BET. Enough is sufficiently supported by an April 2008 report titled The Rap on Rap by the Parents Television Board that criticizes the BET rap programming, which is that the hideous sexual, violent and profane content, targeting children and adolescents.

In an interview in 2010, one of the founders of BET, Sheila Johnson said that she was "embarrassed" about what the network was. "I did not watch it, I suggested to my children that they did not watch it," he said. "When we started BET, it would be Ebony's magazine on television. We have a public affair program We have news... I have an event called Teen Summit , we have many variations of programming, but the problem is the video revolution begins... And then something starts to happen, and I do not like it at all And I remember during those days we will sit and watch this video and decide which is going on and where We did not like the way the woman was portrayed in this video. BET Hip-Hop

BET Hip-Hop is a music video network owned by BET Networks exclusive to digital cable systems. It previously aired some original BET programs like Rap City , ComicView and a network video countdown program. After the relaunch of MTV Jams in 2015 as BET Jams (which has a wider distribution), channel programs are diverted to an automated playlist consisting of BET libraries of older hip-hop videos.
