Caesars Windsor in Windsor, Ontario, Canada is one of four casinos in the Detroit-Windsor area. Owned by the provincial government of Ontario (via Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation), operated by Caesars Entertainment. Both the original Casino Windsor as well as the new expansion were designed by WZMH Architects. The casino is located on the banks of the Windsor River overlooking the Detroit skyline near the end of Canada's Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. The creation of this casino is a major factor in the legalization of casino gambling in Detroit.

The "Forum" tower of the hotel stands as high as 23 floors and opened in 1998. The "Augustus" tower stands on 27 floors and opened in 2008. Caesars Windsor attracts about six million visitors annually. Its main competitors are MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Greektown Casino in Detroit. Caesars Windsor attracts people from Ontario, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and other countries in the Midwest of the United States.

Management

The casino is publicly owned by Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation; most of the profit is returned to the provincial government.

In December 2006, Harrah's announced that it would change the casino name to Caesars Windsor . The name switch coincides with a number of other significant changes, including the new 27-storey hotel ("Augustus Tower"), a 5,000-seat entertainment center, and a 100,000 square foot (9,300m 2 ) convention room.

The change is needed to make the casino more desirable by US gamblers. For various reasons: the security of the 9/11 border, the closing of the exchange rate gap, the one-month casino workout strike in 2004, the popularity of Detroit's three properties, and the provincial smoking ban, Caesars Windsor has failed to retain its customer base from its peak years at the late 1990s. Before September 11, 2001, it was the most popular casino in the Detroit market. The effort was made to make it a destination for tourists, and to honor clients of the Caesars brand, the top class name in the game. Caesars Windsor reopened on June 19, 2008, and featured pianist Billy Joel, who performed at the re-launch event to an invite audience. The hotel has been effectively closed since April 6, 2018 (starting May 25, 2018) due to ongoing worker strikes that resulted in cancellation of reservations and concerts.

History

In 1993, the Ontario government selected a Caesars World joint venture, Circus Circus Enterprises, and Hilton Hotels to build and operate a provincial-owned casino.

Casino Windsor opened in a temporary location in May 1994 as the first casino in Ontario. The former Windsor Art Gallery located on Riverside Drive has been re-installed to store a temporary casino. Casinos see record numbers, attracting millions of customers from the US and Canada. Line-up wrapped around the building. In response, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation announced it would bring a river-boat casino to the river's edge. The Northern Belle is situated at the foot of Ouellette Ave. on the Detroit River. It was open from December 1995 to July 1998.

During this time, permanent casinos are being built on the former Windsor Market site, a few blocks east of the temporary casino. Opened on July 29, 1998, with an opening celebration with the James Bond theme 007. Daisy Fuentes and Regis Philbin were among the stars in attendance. New sites include waterfalls and tropical entrances, hotels, five restaurants, gift shops and entertainment spaces.

In February 2005, representatives of the Ontario Government, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, and the executive team announced a $ 400 million expansion project completed in June 2008. It added a convention center, a 5,000-seat entertainment center, and other hotels. tower. Renovations also begin at the current facility, adding a bar, a large buffet, and repositioning many slots and table games. The official launch took place on June 19, 2008.

In 2006, Canada's first licensed sports book opened in casinos at Legends Sports Bar. Players can bet on certain professional sports and colleges through Sports Picks game betting. The place is designed with booths and large high definition television on board games as well as in theater-style seating section. Unlike in Las Vegas, players are not allowed to bet on single sporting events in sports books - the reason for this is that single sports bets remain explicitly prohibited in the Criminal Code).

Effective May 31, 2006, Casino Windsor became one of several non-smoking commercial casinos in North America. This is to comply with the Smoking Free Ontario Act , which prohibits smoking in all closed workplaces and public places. Prior to the Caesars brand, Steelman Partners designed all games with a high limit.

Business climate

Initially, the US-Canadian currency exchange rate has given people from the United States an economic incentive to gamble at Caesars Windsor. The exchange rate was a major contributor to US gamblers crossing the border in the booming years of Casino Windsor in the late 1990s. The Canadian dollar traded below the figure of sixty-five cents compared to the US dollar in the late 1990s, providing price incentives to US buyers to gamble at Windsor as well as spending in city hotels and hospitality establishments. The rebound of the Canadian dollar, in 2006 breaking the ninety cent mark, which is often associated with higher oil prices, as Canada is an oil exporter, has negatively impacted Windsor's tourist casinos and trade, especially when added sales tax is taken into account in decisions. However, since the Canadian government does not collect gambling wins, casinos often promote this to attract clients from the United States who are left alone to declare taxes on their victory.

In 2007, the Canadian dollar slumped and even surpassed the US dollar with a few cents, which has added to the decline of Windsor, Ontario's hospitality sector. The casino had to compete with three Detroit casino resorts that opened an expanded resort-style property in 2008. Positive exchange rates for Canada have pulled them across the border to shop and gamble, and Windsor has joined other cities in North America in recession.
