History

19th century

Cherry Grove has been completed for nearly 150 years. Cherry Grove dates modern history for the purchase of 1868 by Archer and Elizabeth Perkinson. They bought land between Lone Hill (now Fire Island Pines) and Cherry Grove Hotel from the sea to the bay for 25 cents per acre and named the area for the black cherry tree in the area. The Perkinsons opened a hotel in 1880. According to local legend, Oscar Wilde lives at the Perkinson Hotel.

20th century

In 1921, Perkisons sold all the land east of Duryea Walk to Lone Hill, and then divided what remained, into the many buildings. Many 50 x 80 feet (24 m) can be purchased for $ 250 or less, and the front-sea lot costs no more than a dollar front foot. The building of the recently decommissioned Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York, was moved to form the core of the new colony. The post office was founded in 1922 in place of "Tides" (formerly "The Monster") now; The first footpath was built in 1929. In 1930, Duffy's Hotel replaced the original hotel and was the only place with electricity and telephones.

The Great Hurricane of 1938 destroyed many of Cherry Grove and escaped from the mainland. Instead, new generations started coming from Manhattan including Greta Garbo, Xavier Cugat, Paulette Goddard, Pola Negri, Arlene Francis, and Earl Blackwell (International Celebrity Register publishers).

Duffy was burned on September 27, 1956, and was replaced by Ice Palace Hotel which remains a popular destination. John Eberhardt, a developer who died in 2014, is credited for building the Belvedere Hotel and many other properties in the hamlet, from 1956 to the 1970s.

21st century

The Grove has been home to three mansions: Cielo E Mar (an aria of the 1876 opera La Gioconda translated to "Sky and Sea"), Belvedere, and Bottom of the Garden. While Grove has its charms, some residents in 2005 expressed concerns about the lack of services and populations in the winter, the high cost of food and drink, some "impolite visitors who come to parties... 'Travelers Day'" (especially on July 4 ), excessive zoning zoning arrangements by the Town of Brookhaven, and a large population of greedy deer feeding on beach lawns and private gardens. The new generation of entertainers and socialists calls Cherry Grove their summer home, including Hedda Lettuce, Michael Musto, Empress XII Panzi, Yamaneika Saunders, Sonny Shores, Victoria James, and Wanda Sykes.

The "pop-up" emergency care clinic opens in 2014, which is part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System; golf carts for emergency medical services were also purchased for the Grove, for new 24/7 paramedical services. Locals, "collect about $ 90,000 from donors to hire locally based paramedics, who have responded to more than 30 calls from May to mid-August and will remain staff until the end of September, when crowds are at the beach."

In the morning hours of March 27, 2015, an epic fire of historic proportions "destroys" Grove Hotel, Holly House, and two nearby houses; 23 firms responded from Fire Island and Long Island south coast and three firefighters were wounded. The fire "swallows" the surrounding property, but the fire department is able to extinguish the fire, in this case, "one of the most popular LGBTI destinations." According to his social media account, the Ice Palace, the famous nightclub, "has negligible damage", but not destroyed along with the hotel.

Nearby Areas

The entire community has a single seasonal post office, at Bayview Walk near the main pier, open from May 1st to October 31st, which is a popular venue for gathering. Complete services, such as money orders, are available at the Sayville, New York post office, reachable from the ferry. The postal code is 11782.

Despite the small size of the hamlet, about 41 hectares, the community is further divided into three or four regions, from west to east:

  • A quiet residence, West End , where some residents throughout the year live in about 100 houses marked with rock chimneys, crossing the island from the West Walk to Holly Walk. This was once the home of artist Paul Cadmus.
  • The central business district, or City, from Holly Walk to Doctor's Walk, and beach to bay, including Fire House, Community Center/Art Project, Grove Hotel, Clinic, and public ferry docks, as well as several cooperatives, bars, grocery stores, art galleries, realtors and restaurants. It's denser than the rest of the village. Some of the main structures in the middle were "smashed" by a major fire in March 2015, including Grove Hotel and Holly House.
  • The East End housing, from Doctor's Walk to Ivy Walk, and south of Bayside Walk, consists of only about 100 private homes, almost all of them seasonal. The northeast section of the East End, north of Bayview Walk, has several private homes and Belvedere Guest House for Men; some properties also have their own private dock. Once connected with the Fire Island Pines, erosion and rising waters led to the collapse of Northeast Bayview Walk extension. Most of the Bay Walk was reconstructed in the spring of 2014.

Cherry Grove is accessible via two main roads (Bayview and Lewis), which are generally parallel to the beach, and sixteen lanes (Ivy, Sumner, Maryland, Aeon, Gerard, Greene, Duryea, Doctor, Main, Ocean, Holly, Surf, Beach, Sea, East, and West), which are generally perpendicular to the beach. South Walk (not shown on the map on the right) is parallel to the beach and extends between Surf and Beach Walks.

Emergency services

Fire Department

The Cherry Grove Fire Department (CGFD) is a low incidence department. CGFD also has a tug station located at every other corner of the road where the unique hose houses contain the vital equipment that members will need to press fire; this is due to the unique nature of Cherry Grove. There are no roads, just sidewalks, so there is no ability to respond with firefighters. If a fire or emergency is seen, a person should call 911 or run to the nearest corner of the road and pull the lever down. Fire sirens are activated, which alert members to respond. CGFD is one of the few firefighting departments in New York that still use manual pull station system.

CGFD is a voluntary force. He receives help from the nearest fire department (such as the Sayville Fire Department) in the event of a major fire, as happened in March 2015 when a fire destroyed several commercial properties in the center.

Health care

Northwell Health operates two emergency care facilities on Fire Island (one in Cherry Grove and the other at the nearby Ocean Beach). These centers operate during the summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and are open for patient visits seven days a week from 9 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 6 pm. If the patient requires medical care outside these hours, a Direct Care Center doctor may be contacted by contacting the local police.

The Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, the Southside Hospital, and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center are located directly opposite the Great South Bay of Fire Island in Long Island hamlet in West Islip, Bay Shore, and Patchogue villages, respectively. Heliport for medevac helicopter use adjacent to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. The special boats provided by Suffolk County District Police Bureaus anchored in various communities on the Fire Island provide emergency transport for individuals in need of terrible medical care. In many cases, the Long Island ambulance will meet the boat as soon as they cross the Gulf (about 4.5 miles) and then drive an individual close to one of the three hospitals. Also, an emergency access road connects Long Island (West Islip) to Fire Island (Kismet). However, the road ends there and does not extend the length of the island to other communities.
