History
Enjoy Yourself Tonight created by Robert Chua in 1967, when he was just 21 years old. At that time the first TVB General Manager, Australian Colin Bendall, wanted to make variety shows in a format similar to In Melbourne Tonight . Chua was given the task of creating such a show, and after spending five months observing popular culture and everyday life in Hong Kong, Enjoy Your Night Night made his first appearance, and instantly gained immense popularity.
The show airs from 9:30 to 11:00 pm every Sunday night, sometimes including Saturday. The show includes singing, dancing, short dramas and various performance games that interact with the audience.
This show was one of the first shows ever to be broadcast in color in Hong Kong on November 20, 1967.
In the 1970s, one of the earliest bands to perform in the show was Four Golden Flowers. Lydia "Fei-fei" Shum will be one of the most famous MCs that became a symbol for the show. Another tradition of the show is for all players to gather at the end of each performance to sing "Good Night Song", written by Joseph Koo. This, along with the opening song of the show (also titled "Enjoy Yourself Tonight"), has achieved iconic status in popular Hong Kong culture. Many Hong Kong singers and singers performed at EYT during the 1970s, such as Agnes Chan, The Young Men, Lotus, etc.
In 1989 Enjoying Your Night's Night has decreased the terminal in the audience numbers; though (or perhaps because of) a radical change in format (which saw the weeknight program reduced to a half-hour duration, plus traditional variety shows on Saturday) including the use of a new theme song in the original song that debuted in 1991, failed to retain viewers, who at that time has developed new tastes and has access to new forms of entertainment. As a result, the show ended its 27 years of operation in October 1994. To date, TVB has not admitted that Enjoy Yourself Tonight has ended its journey. They simply say that if the show is canceled, the Farewell/Curtain Call edition will be produced and aired. In 2007, no known edition existed.
Since then there have been several attempts to revive Enjoy Yourself Tonight as a one-week program, first in 1997, then from 2002 to 2004; nothing works.
In 2007, to celebrate TVB's 40th anniversary, the half-hour workday program known as Enjoy Yourself Tonight 2007 runs from October 22 to November 16. As the Chinese title (??????, literally "EYT Revisited") suggests, it is a re-run of some of the most memorable moments of the original EYT show, as well as bringing back some of the original players involved for guest appearances/interviews. In addition, the original theme song was brought back. Although the latest program is just nostalgic that looks back to the glory of EYT, yet still testifies about the event's enduring heritage to popular Hong Kong culture.
