Flagstaff Gardens is the oldest park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, which was first established in 1862. Currently this park is one of the most visited and widely used parks in the city by residents, office workers in nearby, and tourists. The gardens are renowned for their archaeological, horticultural, historical and social significance to Melbourne's history.

The park is 7.2 hectares (18 hectares) from the Crown Land which is bordered by the streets of William, La Trobe, King and Dudley, run by the City of Melbourne. In the southeast corner opposite is the entrance to Flagstaff railway station. The opposite Diagonal stands the Victoria branch of the Royal Mint, founded August 7, 1869. In the northeast corner on William Street, is Queen Victoria's Market.

The park contains a large lawn with various mature trees, flowers, and wild animals including possums. The southern end is characterized by fallen trees, while the northern end contains a mature eucalyptus. The road from the shelter line of elm along with some big fig trees of Moreton Bay. History

With the founding of Melbourne in 1835, the first death in the colony was buried in the high ground between William and King Streets, in what is called Burial Hill's day-to-day. The hill has a panoramic view of a small colony, the Yarra River, and Port Phillip.

  • 1838 - Melbourne cemetery is marked in what is now Queen Victoria market, and burial continues at the site.
  • 1839 - Superintendent Charles La Trobe first enters this site as part of a green belt that encompasses Melbourne which includes Batman Hill, Carlton Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens, Treasury Gardens and Kings Domain.
  • 1840 - a flagpole erected on a hill as part of a signaling system between the city and the ship at Melbourne Harbor. Flagstaff proved too small and the next year as high as fifty feet (15 m) was installed.
  • November 11, 1850: the Victoria Separation announcement website of the New South Wales Colony, resulted in celebrations with large bonfires with about 5,000 city dwellers in attendance.
  • 1853 - Melbourne cemetery establishment
  • 1857 - excavation dug for easy King Street gradient. This creates a bluestone retaining wall from a high bank along the western boundary.
  • 1857-1863 - Magnet Observatory and Weather Station was founded by Georg von Neumayer at the top of the hill. William John Wills worked here as an assistant before being appointed to Burke and Wills expeditions. The observatory was transferred to the Kings Domain when the Melbourne Observatory was established, as iron in buildings around Flagstaff Hill affected Neumayer's magnetic observations.
  • 1860 - telegraph replaces signal by flag.
  • 1862 - West Melbourne citizens petition the government to turn the hill into a public park or recreation area. Clement Hodgkinson, Deputy Surveyor-General in charge of the city park, prepares plans for the park and directs its implementation. Fitzroy and Treasury Gardens were also designed by him.
