Gleaner Company Ltd. is a newspaper publishing company in Jamaica. Founded in 1834 by Joshua and Jacob De Cordova, the main product of the company is The Gleaner , a daily morning paper published six days a week. It also publishes Sunday papers, Sunday Gleaner, and the evening tabloid, The Star . Overseas weekly editions are published in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The paper was known as The Daily Gleaner until 1992.
The company is headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Gleaner Company Limited is a newspaper company based in Jamaica. The main activities of the Company and its subsidiaries are the publication and printing of newspapers and radio broadcasts. The Company's subsidiaries include Independent Radio Company Limited (IRC) - Power 106 and Music 99 FM, Gleaner Online Limited, Creek Investment Limited, Selectco Publications Limited, GV Media Group Limited and The Gleaner Company (Canada) Inc. and The Gleaner Company (USA)) Limited.
There are about 417 direct employees. In addition to these direct employees, the Company's business relies on contractors and vendors who are business people who trade with their own rights. Then there are also motor contractors, rural agents, space writers, correspondents, freelance photographers, and contributors. In total, about 4,000 people in Jamaica are involved in Gleaner operations.

History
The Gleaner was published in 1834. It was founded by two brothers, Jacob and Joshua de Cordova.
In 1898 became a publicly listed company and listed on the Jamaican Stock Exchange.
From 1834 to mid 1969, the Gleaner Company was located at various locations on Harbor Street, mainly at 148-156 Harbor Street, with several departments operating from 146-161 Harbor Street. Sustained growth prompted the company to set up this building on 7 North Street, where construction work at the plant began on February 1, 1967. Completed in 1969 and blessed by religious leaders in the community on May 26 of that year. On Monday, July 14 of the same year, the company runs its business entirely in a new place.
As the need became clearer for the western end of the island to be better served, the branch office was established in Montego Bay in 1966, and the advertising office then opened in Ocho Rios and Mandeville.

The Gleaner Archive is an online database containing over 970,000 pages of historical newspapers from The Gleaner newspaper. A full-page newspaper, since 1834, was added to the site three months after publication and can be searched based on keywords and dates, making it easy for customers to quickly navigate historical content. This database enables customers to gain local perspectives on historical news, to examine family history or to simply read about interesting people or events.

The Gleaner Honor Awards - this is the Company's flagship annual event program that recognizes individuals and organizations have a significant contribution to improving the quality of life of Jamaica.
Gleaner's own Spelling Bee Kids, who in 2009 celebrated 51 years with 2009 champion Shari-Jo Miller, representing Jamaica at Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington DC.
The newspaper in Education - a program, which distributes Gleaner's publications to 100 schools each year.
PALS Jamaica - a non-profit organization, established along with other media houses and private sector companies to teach and encourage conflict resolution in schools.
CSEC Seminar - The Gleaner provides face-to-face assistance to students and teachers through a seminar in Kingston, St. James and Westmoreland every year. CSEC Youthlink Seminar is a very popular annual seminar that teaches students' strategies to get the best score on the CSEC exam.
Teacher's Day - On Teacher Day Gleaner's management team involves students in several elementary and secondary schools as they provide teachers with the help to honor Teacher's Day.
Crime Stop - In connection with other media houses, Gleaner publishes crime-related information to assist police.
Awards program
The Governor-General's Achievements Achievement, sponsored by the Gleaner Company in association with the Jamaican National Development Community, Jamaican Jamaican Community Building, the Victorian Society of Discovery Society and the First Caribbean International Development Community, recognizes a person from every parish that has social security and economic mobility regardless from a challenging situation, and has been involved in community outreach. Youth Awards are given to people under 35 who embody the principles of excellence in various fields of business.
Other awards programs sponsored by the Company include NCB Nation Builders Award, First Global Vision Awards, JIM Manager of the Year Awards and Youth View Awards.
Entertainment
In 2009 The Star increased its promotional engagement in the Digicel Rising Stars program. The contestants visited the Gleaner Company and the video clip was broadcast for a week on TVJ. An Editor forum is held with the group and the Star Celebrity Vendor's promotion is done with the top 3 contestants in Half-Way-Tree.
Other entertainment events sponsored by the company include Shaggy & amp; Brave Care Concert friends, dancing Dynamites, Osmosis, Miss Jamaica World, Ity and Fancy Cat Show, take me away, Reggae Opera Hour Yes, and Downtown Carnival.
Restaurant Week, hosted by SSCO in association with Gleaner, provides a one-week restaurant meal discount in November each year and has become an important part of the Jamaican entertainment calendar. For the first time in 2009, restaurants in Montego Bay and Ochio Rios were included in the promotion, which required the change of name from 'Kingston Restaurant Week' to 'Restaurant Week'.
Education and youth programs
Every year, through the Burger King National School Debate, a number of students are given the opportunity to hone their research, analytical and presentation skills in the annual competition of the King's National School Competition. The Gleaner, through Youthlink magazine, has been an old partner of the program.
Other Education and Youth Programs supported by the Gleaner Company include the All Together Sing TVJ Competition, the JLS National Reading Competition, the Preferences and Publications Exhibition, and the JTA activities.
Economic stimulation
In December 2009, The Gleaner Company Limited partnered with Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation and other organizations to host 'Christmas in the City: Downtown Kingston Comes Alive'. The goal is to stimulate economic activity in Downtown Kingston in response to a reduction in business activity. Promoted and covered by Gleaner properties, this one-day event is well received by traders and buyers filling the streets in a lively and safe environment. Others have approached The Gleaner Company with an interest in replicating the project.
The Gleaner Company continues to support trade shows and organizational activities such as the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, the Jamaican Stock Exchange and the Jamaican Private Sector Organization (PSOJ) in their efforts to support national economic goals.

Important years of company life
1834 September 13: First publication is a 4-page weekly newspaper printed on 66 West Harbor Street along with Mercantile Intelligencer . It started life like The Gleaner and Weekly Compendium of News, published only on Saturdays, with quarterly 10 shipping subscriptions in Kingston, and 13 shillings and four pence in the countryside. December: change name to The Gleaner: A family weekly newspaper devoted to literature, morality, art and science, and entertainment .
1836 The merger of DeCordova Advertising Sheets with The Gleaner to produce 4 pages of paper, published daily except Sundays.
1875 The Gleaner is printed on a steam boosted press.
1882 The fire destroyed its factory at 148 Harbor Street and The Gleaner printed at the Government Printing Office for two weeks.
1897 June 10: The Gleaner becomes a public company.
1902 The Gleaner increased the size to 16-page and sold for a penny.
1907 January 14: The earthquake and subsequent fires destroyed the building on Harbor Street, four days later on the street again, and the printing was done at the Government Printing Office for a while.
1908 Rapid expansion with the introduction of three linotype machines.

1969 The Gleaner "The Old Lady of Harbor Street" starts operating on 7 North Street, Central Kingston, its current location, where six-unit rotary rotary Crabtree is installed.
1982 The main computer system is installed - making it one of the first newspapers in the Caribbean to switch to new technology.
1992 December 7: Change the name of The Daily Gleaner to The Gleaner .
1993 The Company entered into an agreement with System Integrators, Inc. (SII) to provide news publishing solutions.
1994 The company put up a 16-unit Goss Urbanite press and a new Pre-Press system with the facility to fully mention newspaper pages.
1997 February 16: Launch of website at www.jamaica-gleaner.com June 9, The Gleaner Company Ltd. started printing The Miami Herald - International Satellite Edition every day basis. This operation was discontinued on March 31, 1999
