Good Morning America ( GMA ) is an American morning television show broadcast on ABC. It debuted on November 3, 1975, and first expanded to the weekend with a Sunday edition debut on January 3, 1993. The Sunday edition was canceled in 1999; the weekend edition is returned on Saturday and Sunday on September 4, 2004. The weekday program will start from 7:00 to 9:00 am in all US time zones (live in the Eastern Time Zone and on tape delays elsewhere throughout the country ). The Saturday and Sunday edition is an hour long and transmitted to the live ABC station at 7: 00A Eastern Time morning, although stations in some markets show it at different times. Audiences in the Pacific Time Zone receive the latest feeds with special opening and live updates. The third hour of the broadcast of the working day that aired from 2007 to 2008, exclusively on ABC News Now.
The program features news, interviews, weather forecasts, fascinating stories and feature segments such as "Pop News" (featuring pop culture and entertainment news, and viral videos), "GMA Heat Index" (featuring a mix of entertainment, lifestyle and stories human) and "Play of the Day" (featuring a video clip or selected television program). It was produced by ABC News and broadcasts from Times Square Studios in New York City's Times Square district. Good Morning America has become the most watched morning show in total viewers and key demos every year since Summer 2012. GMA generally ranks second in the rankings, behind NBC < i> Today 1995-2012. History
1975: The inaugural year
On January 6, 1975, ABC launched AM America in an effort to compete with NBC's Today . The program is hosted by Bill Beutel and Stephanie Edwards, with Peter Jennings and Robert Kennedy reading the news. Because the show can not find viewers against Today (and the anchor teams from Jim Hartz and Barbara Walters), ABC looks for a new approach. The network found that one of its affiliates, WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio, had preceded AM America to broadcast a local production show called The Morning Exchange.
Unlike AM America and Today , The Morning Exchange features a relaxed and less dramatic approach by offering news and weather updates only at the top and down every hour and use the rest of the time to discuss topics of interest to the public interest. The Morning Exchange also forms a group of regular guests who specialize in specific areas, including health, entertainment, consumer affairs and travel. Also unlike the NBC and ABC shows, The Morning Exchange is not broadcast from the newsroom set but instead looks like a suburban living room.
In Cleveland's morning screening process as a creative source, ABC also began searching for other local events, Good Morning! , produced by Boston ABC affiliate WCVB-TV. Good Morning! is very similar in format to The Morning Exchange , but with less emphasis on news and weather. In fact, after the revamped ABC morning show aired in 1975 under the title of Good Morning America, WCVB station manager Bob Bennett accused ABC entertainment president Fred Silverman of stealing the title of "Good morning! ; no abandonment and suspension of legal action is settled against ABC in this matter. The launch of Good Morning America has produced a morning show in Boston that changed its name - to Good Day! .
ABC took the episode of The Morning Exchange and used it as a pilot episode. After a very positive review for the pilot, the format replaced AM America in November 1975 as Good Morning America. The first host of the new program is David Hartman, featuring Nancy Dussault as his co-host. Dussault was replaced in 1977 by Sandy Hill. For the first seven years, weather forecasts were presented by John Coleman, former meteorologist for ABL-owned and operated television station WLS-TV in Chicago, who will leave GMA in 1982 to launch The Weather Channel with CEO of Landmark Communications, Frank Batten. Dave Murray (now chief meteorologist at KTVI in St. Louis) provided for both the Good Morning America and ABC News This Morning 1983-1986 ABC News. In August 1986, he was replaced by Spencer Christian, who works at WABC-TV in New York City and serves as meteorologist for Coleman and Murray whenever they go on vacation or assignment.
1976-89: Growth and change
The ratings of the program rose slowly, but continued throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s while Today suffered a slight decline in viewing, especially with Walters' decision to leave NBC for a job at ABC News. On August 30th, 1976, Tom Brokaw began pursing Today while the program began looking for a female co-host. Within a year, Today succeeded in beating back threats with Brokaw and new co-host Jane Pauley, featuring Gene Shalit art and entertainment contributor. Good Morning America continues to threaten Today ' the ranking of dominance into the 1980s, especially after Brokaw left the last program to become a companion of NBC Nightly News with Roger Mudd for 17 months before being appointed to the sole anchor of the program. For the first time, Good Morning America became the highest-rated morning news program in the United States when Today fell to second place.
Initially, Good Morning America was a talk show program with the main host, Hartman, who joined the co-host sidekick; Dussault and Hill are accused of being less equal hosts. In 1980 Hill despaired to leave Good Morning America after her arrest with Hartman, who was said to have "had a problem with a strong woman." He was replaced by Joan Lunden, then a reporter at New York City's main station, WABC-TV. Hartman and Lunden led the show through several years of success. Lunden's popularity led to his promotion to rival in 1986, and became a more equal footing with Hartman than any woman in front of him. The partnership ended on February 20, 1987, when Hartman retired after 3,189 broadcasts.
After Hartman's departure, Lunden was paired with ABC News correspondent Charles Gibson on February 23, 1987, which ultimately resulted in ratings for the skyrocketing program. Tim Lunden and Gibson became the most popular news partnerships on television in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and for the first time Good Morning America regularly won rankings against Today . At one point prior to Spencer Christian's arrival in 1986, the forecast for this program was provided by WXYZ-TV meteorological head Jerry Hodak through a separate screen between WXYZ studios in Detroit and Good Morning America in New York. 1990-98: Up and down
Good Morning America entered the 1990s with tremendous ranking success. January 1999-May 2005: Gibson-Sawyer

Though Today remains the top morning news show, Sawyer's team, Gibson and Ross are inching close, creating a worthy rival. According to Linda McLoof, executive director of news research at ABC News from 2001 to 2009, "When Shelley left, the momentum of broadcasting was initially sustained, but one season later, the audience began to decline, like passing a baton in a relay race. Antonio Mora served as a newsreader for the program until March 18, 2002, when he went on to become a newscaster at a station owned and operated by CBS, WBBM-TV in Chicago. He was replaced by former ESPN anchor and correspondent Robin Roberts.
May 2005 -June 2006: Gibson-Sawyer-Roberts
On May 23, 2005, ABC News announced that Robin Roberts would be promoted from a newsreader to one of the contributors of Good Morning America, joining Gibson and Sawyer. Roberts previously served as a regular replacement for Gibson and Sawyer when one of them was on vacation or on duty. On November 3, 2005, Good Morning America celebrated its 30th anniversary with retrospections and clips from the event's history and by decorating Times Square. Former co-hosts Hartman and Lunden, along with former meteorologist Spencer Christian, were among the guests of honor. Hartman signed the day's event with his trademark: "Of all of us, be a good day." On the same day, Good Morning America became the first network news program that started broadcasting in high definition.
On December 2, 2005, weathercaster Tony Perkins left the program after six years. The last ten minutes of the day's edition was dedicated to Perkins, where he thanked one of the show's producers and a genuine goodbye to Gibson's anchors Roberts and Sawyer. Perkins left the program to return to his family in Washington, D.C. and joined the station owned and operated by Fox, WTTG, where he had previously served as a weathercaster. He lovingly said to his young son, "Connor, if you watch, my father will come home." Perkins was replaced by Mike Barz, former morning sports anchor at WGN-TV in Chicago.
Gibson left Good Morning America for the second time on June 28, 2006. The day's edition is dedicated to 19 years as a host and celebrates his new role as news bearer of ABC World News Gibson ends His position at GMA states, "For nineteen years, my morning was not just good - they were great."
June 2006-December 2009: Sawyer-Roberts
There is speculation that Sawyer will leave Good Morning America when his contract expires in 2007 to take the anchor position on ABC World News given to Gibson. In August 2006, Chris Cuomo was named the newsreader while resuming his stewardship in the PrimeTime news magazine and serving as senior ABC News legal correspondent. Meanwhile, Sam Champion, a long night meteorologist at WABC-TV, was named the new weather anchor for the program and as the weather editor for ABC News. Both Cuomo and Champion began their respective duties on the program on September 5, 2006, when GoodMorning America instituted a new graphics package and new news area for Cuomo to report the headlines. The following week, on 13 September 2006, the program introduced a new logo - this time with Avant Garde's gold font with a blue background, which resembles the original logo of Good Morning America that was used until early 1987.
On June 29, 2007, longtime film critic Joel Siegel died of complications from colon cancer at age 63. The July 9th edition of GMA was dedicated to Siegel, with former host Hartman, Hill, Lunden, Newman, Christian, Perkins, and Gibson all appear to share their memories. One month later, on July 31, 2007, Robin Roberts announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer after finding a lump in her breast during a self-examination while preparing for Siegel's episode of honor. Roberts remains a newscaster while undergoing chemotherapy and completing radiation treatment on March 28, 2008.
On October 22, 2007, Good Morning America introduced a new air graphics package. Using a lot of graphic design features before, he switched from a basic blue background to a golden-more golden setting. The opening of the program changed from camera zooming on host while introducing host to opening with new music (by New York City music production company DreamArtists Studios) and background with Good Morning America logo down to frame. On January 15, 2008, during an interview with Diane Sawyer on the show, actress Diane Keaton commented on Sawyer's physical appeal, stating that if she had a lips like Sawyer, "then I will not work on my [swear]. Personality! "Keaton quickly apologized for the remark and Sawyer jokingly threatened to send his mother" to work your personality with soap in your mouth. December 2009-April 2014: Roberts-Stephanopoulos
On September 2, 2009, ABC announced that Sawyer would replace Gibson as an ABC World News carrier at the end of the year. There is speculation that either George Stephanopoulos, newscaster Chris Cuomo, weekend newscaster Bill Weir, or News News World news reader David Muir will replace Sawyer in the program. Representatives for ABC News stated that they wanted to return the show to the original male-female anchor format. On December 10, 2009, Stephanopoulos was announced as Sawyer's successor, with Juju Chang replacing Cuomo as a newsreader; the changes take effect four days later on December 14th.
In April 2010, an anchor desk in the studio was moved back to the front window facing Times Square, where when Good Morning America moved to the Times Square Studios facility in 1999; the news desk was also moved in front of the window. On May 3, 2010, the program debuted new "light blue and bright" graphics, and new theme music by DreamArtists Studios. A completely new set for the program was introduced on January 31, 2011; monitors used for the national weather segment (mainly used only at 7:00 am) are moved closer to the reader table while the news desk stays in the same place. This was the first major change since the show was upgraded to high definition in November 2005.
On March 17, 2011, ABC News President Ben Sherwood announced that former GMA national correspondent Lara Spencer would rejoin the program in May in a newly created anchor lifestyle position. On March 29, 2011, ESPN's anchor Josh Elliott was named after the news program reader after the departure of Juju Chang.
In the summer of 2011, Good Morning America decided to vacate the second floor of the Times Square studio, which overlooks Times Square, due to cost issues. On September 6, 2011, the program began broadcasting from an entirely new studio set located on the first floor (ground floor) of the Times Square studio. During the week of April 1, 2012, ABC News special correspondent Katie Couric, who recently joined the network as part of a deal to hold a syndicated talk show distributed by Disney-ABC sister Domestic Television, filled in for Robin Roberts at Good Morning America . Couric has hosted a rival NBC morning program Today 1991-2006; her duties of Good Morning America marked her return to the morning news after six years.
On August 30, 2012, Roberts went on medical leave after undergoing bone marrow transplant (donated by his sister and fellow news reader SallyAnn Roberts) after being diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome. GMA correspondent Amy Robach and 20/20 anchor Elizabeth Vargas serves as a primary substitute, usually alternating every other week. Others, including some celebrities, also became the anchor of special guests during this time such as Kelly Ripa, Jessica Simpson, Barbara Walters, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. In September 2014, former NFL player Tim Tebow was announced to join the program as a part-time correspondent to help launch a new segment, "Motivate Me Monday". He made his debut on the program on September 15, 2014.
On November 19, 2015, the program celebrates its 40th anniversary, with all major anchors and most weather and weather anchors back to join in the celebrations and share their stories. Clips of all 40 years are shown.
On April 19, 2016, Strahan announces that he will leave Live! with Kelly and Michael to join Good Morning America full time.
September 2016 -present: Roberts-Stephanopoulos-Strahan
On September 6, 2016, Michael Strahan began his journey as an official full time co-host of the program along with Roberts, Stephanopoulos, and Spencer. A new title order was imported excluding the name Spencer. The first hour focuses on the morning news broadcast by Roberts, Stephanopulos, and Strahan. Zee did the weather segment and Robach read the morning headlines. The second hour was in the second floor studio and recorded in front of the studio audience directly. It focuses on "light news" and entertainment. It was pinned by four major co-anchor (including Spencer) and featured guests and panel discussion talks.
In April 2018, it was announced that Spencer would reduce his working hours in GMA from five days a week to three.
On April 23, 2018, ABC News confirmed that News Anchor Amy Robach will abandon GMA in late May to become a co-anchor from <2020 to replace Elizabeth Vargas who left the network.
On May 23rd, 2018, an afternoon extension of GMA (currently untitled) was announced as a replacement in fall 2018 for the canceled cooking series The Chew at 1pm. ET/noon CT timeslot.

The special summer morning edition of Good Morning America, entitled Good Afternoon America , was aired on July 9, 2012, as a temporary substitute for a canceled conversation/lifestyle > Revolution in 2:00 pm Working time slot in Eastern Time.
Good Afternoon America was recorded immediately after the morning program and focused on lighter tariffs, with the exception of the July 20 edition, which provided live coverage of Aurora Century 16 theater shootings. Like his morning colleague, Good Afternoon America comes from Times Square Studios. The limited-run program, which ends on September 7, 2012, is hosted by Good Morning America news anchor Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer's lifestyle announcer.
GMA Wake Call

Weekend Edition
The first week edition of Good Morning America aired on January 3, 1993, aired only on Sundays; it was held at various points by Willow Bay, Aaron Brown, John Hockenberry, Dana King, Lisa McRee, Antonio Mora, Kevin Newman and Bill Ritter. This program was canceled on February 28, 1999.
In August 2010, Bill Weir left the weekend edition to become the co-anchor of Nightline ; Marysol Castro left the show the following month. While Dan Harris officially took over as Weir's replacement in October, meteorologists from various ABC affiliates across the country filled in to provide the national weather segment for more than a year after Castro's departure; finally in November 2011, Ginger Zee, who previously served as meteorologist at NBC O & amp; O WMAQ-TV in Chicago, designated as the weathercaster for the weekend edition. After Zee was promoted for anchor weather of the Good Morning America edition of December 2013, the program returned to having an ABC affiliate meteorology to replace in Saturday and Sunday editions, until ABC announced the appointment of Rob Marciano (former expert CNN meteorologist who recently departed as co-host Entertainment Tonight as a full-time weekend anchor in July 2014, effective in September.
In July 2014, Bianna Golodryga announced it would leave ABC to take the correspondent role at Yahoo News. Paula Faris (who had previously replaced Golodryga in the spring of 2012, when she was on maternity leave) was named as a substitute for Golodryga as a weekend companion.
Most of the week, GMA Weekend shows come from the main ABC News group at ABC Television Center in Manhattan Square, Manhattan, and not Times Square Studios; the large rear projection screen is used to project the Times Square background visible in the GMA business day background to provide continuity. Earlier weekend "GMA" editions also aired from Times Square Studio but were transferred to ABC News to cut costs.

In 1992 and 1993, Good Morning America won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk/Service Show. In 2010, the program was nominated for GLAAD Media Award for "Extraordinary TV Journalistic Segment" for the segment "Total Transformation: Why Chaz Bono Decides to Change".
