History

William F. Harrah opened his first bingo salon on October 29, 1937, but in December 1937, the show was closed. Harrah spent the winter collecting money and reopening his casino called Heart Tango between the Virginia and Center roads, in the heart of the action. Harrah gradually acquired neighboring casinos adjacent to his company on Virginia Street. In 1968, he acquired the adjacent Reno Grand Hotel and contracted renowned casino architect Martin Stern Jr to create and build a luxurious 24-story hotel tower to build on the former Grand Hotel bones. The tower was opened in the summer of 1969. In 1981, a 100-room tower was added to the 24-storey tower by the new owner of the Holiday Inn.

In the early 1990s, in the midst of another major renovation, Harrah's Reno changed its name to Headliner Room, featuring acts such as Joan Rivers, The Smothers Brothers, Merle Haggard and Mitzi Gaynor, to Sammy's Showroom, after Sammy Davis Jr., property on a regular basis and is the opening night action in the previous Headliner Room. The room opens with a double headliner and cancellation policy, but then switches to a revived only revs policy. Stories in the first few years of the revived Sammy Showroom include Vic Damone, Little Little Man, Phyllis Diller, Marilyn McCoo and Norm Crosby.

In 1995, Harrah's Entertainment, spun from the Promus Hotel Company (formerly Holiday Inn), and built the world's largest Hampton Inn, one of the famous brand hotels, adjacent to the Reno property. The hotel opened in November 1995. The Hampton Inn at Harrah's Reno is connected to the casino floor and includes its own lobby, valet and meeting facilities. During the flood of Reno in 1997, Hampton Inn and Harrah had to be closed for damage. In 1999, the Promus Company was sold to Hilton Hotels Corporation. Harrah's gained a 26-story addition from Hampton and made it a smooth part of Harrah's, adding 400 rooms to its inventory. In 1999, Harrah bought closed casinos at Nevada Club and Harold's Club and blew them up to make room for a large entertainment venue called The Plaza. Opened in 2000 as a concert venue, the first year's action included Ray Charles. In 2003, Harrah's renovated East Tower, formerly the Hampton Inn and the original West Tower in 2005-06. Harrah's has left Steak House, the most familiar place that Harrah's founder built, almost untouched. Major interior renovations occurred in 1995, 1999 and 2006.

Until now, almost no updates or improvements, but all changed since early 2011; hotel officials decided to start investing in certain property areas. Beginning in late 2010, officials decided to restore the use of "wall-wash" exterior lighting to bathe the hotel tower in bright purple, the Harrah brand's official color. In February 2011, Harrah's closed down his old Napa coffee shop and replaced it with Hash House a go go.

In October 2017, property ownership was transferred to Vici Properties as part of a company spin-off, and leased back to Caesars Entertainment.
