History
Launched in 2000, Sony's second home console, PlayStation 2, features an imperfect online feature in certain games through its online network. A network adapter is required, available as an add-on for the original model and integrated into the hardware in the lean model. However, Sony does not provide integrated services for the system, so support for network features is specific to every third party game and server, and there is no interoperability of cross-game presence. Five years later during the development stage for the third home console, PlayStation 3, Sony declared their intention to build on its predecessor function by creating a new interconnect service that keeps users in touch with the "PlayStation World" network. In March 2006, Sony officially introduced an integrated online service, while named "PlayStation Network Platform". The list of supporting features was announced at the Tokyo Game Show in the same year.
Sony launched an optional premium subscription service over the free PSN service in June 2010. Known as PlayStation Plus, the system provides access to exclusive content, free games, regular store discounts, and early access to upcoming games.
After a security disruption, the PlayStation Network has a temporary suspension of operations beginning on April 20, 2011 and affecting 77 million registered accounts. Lasting for 23 days, this blackout is the longest time PSN has been offline since its inception in 2006. Sony reports that user data has been obtained during infiltration. In June 2011, Sony launched the "Welcome Back" program after the blackout, allowing all PSN customers to join before April 20 to download two free PlayStation 3 titles and two free PlayStation Portable games. Users also receive 30 days of free PlayStation Plus, while users who have subscribed before the blackout gets 60 days free. After disruption, Sony changed the PlayStation Network license agreement to legally prohibit users from filing a lawsuit and join a class action lawsuit without first trying to resolve the issue with an arbitrator.
In July 2012, Sony Computer Entertainment announced that it has acquired the streaming video game service Gaikai for $ 380 million. The acquisition was later reinforced when Sony acquired the assets of Gaikai's rival market, OnLive. At the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2014, Sony announced that Gaikai technology will be used to run PlayStation Now; a new cloud-based game service that allows people to play PlayStation games on various devices. During 2014, Sony launched services in North America on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in beta form as a means for users to test performance and price structure.
On December 25, 2014, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live suffered network disruption after a denial-of-service attack. Both services are flooded with millions of unauthenticated connection requests, making it difficult for the original user to establish a connection. Functionality was restored on December 26, with some users having trouble in the days that followed. On January 1, 2015, Sony announced that users will be compensated for downtime with a 5-day extension to a PlayStation Plus membership.
Formerly providing games from the wider Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network became Sony's premier entertainment service by 2015, bringing together games, music, television and video. While synonymous with games, Sony says, PlayStation Network has evolved into a "comprehensive digital entertainment brand". The name of SEN is still used in some places.

User information
Sign up
Sign up for the free PlayStation Network. Two types of accounts can be created: Master Accounts and Sub accounts. Master account allows full access to all settings, including parental controls. Sub accounts can be created (eg For children) with the desired restrictions set by the master account holder. Sub account owners have the option to upgrade their account once they reach the age of 18. Sony encourages registrants to use unique emails and strong passwords that are not related to other online services.
Online ID
Online ID is the username of someone on the PlayStation Network. This can range from 3 to 16 characters in length and consists of letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores. The user's Online ID is the center of your PSN profile and displayed while playing online games and using other network features. It must be unique, not offensive and irreversible.
Profile
Users have the option of revealing their real name in addition to their Online ID, adding a personal description, showing a profile picture or avatar, and a list of all spoken languages. The profile also includes a summary of the player's trophy level and recent activity. PlayStation 4 users have the additional option of tying their Facebook account to their PlayStation Network account, and their profile picture will be updated automatically whenever they change their Facebook image. Profiles can be viewed through the user interface or online via the PlayStation website.
Cup
Trophies are rewards in games that are given to players to achieve certain targets or achieve certain accomplishments (eg solve difficult levels or defeat a number of enemies). There are four types of trophies given. The bronze, silver, or gold trophy depends on the difficulty of achievement, with each prize contributing to the level system attached to the player profile. A platinum trophy is awarded to players once they open all other trophies in the basic game; Smaller sized games, however, generally do not have a platinum trophy. In addition, each trophy is judged by popularity - common, rare, extremely rare, and extremely rare - based on the percentage of people who have unlocked it. Developers can choose to create hidden trophies so that their values ââand descriptions are not disclosed until after the user gets them.
- Portable ID
Portable IDs are small infographics intended to be used as forum signatures. The graph displays the user's trophy level and the number of trophies given. Each user can sign in to their PSN account using a web browser to access and customize their Portable ID, and then be assigned a unique URL that they can cut & amp; paste to display their ID elsewhere on the internet. Some third-party websites offer similar graphics (commonly referred to as "trophy cards") as free and paid services that automatically update or manually update by the user.
PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus, abbreviated as PS Plus, is a paid PlayStation Network subscription service that gives users access to premium features. These extras include early access to upcoming games, beta trials, regular store discounts, and the ability to update software systems and game patches that are downloaded automatically to the console. As part of the subscription, members are given six games each month - usually two for each platform - and 10Ã,Ã GB of internet storage space for up to 1,000 saved game files. PlayStation 4 online multiplayer requires subscription to PlayStation Plus. Users can choose monthly, quarterly or yearly subscriptions.
Instant Game Collection
Membership in the PlayStation Plus service includes access to a free rolling game option, known as Instant Game Collection. New titles are provided each month, while old games are pulled from the collection. Members can keep all games in the Instant Game Collection as long as they are PlayStation Plus members. If their membership is lost, these games will become locked and unplayable. However, once the membership is updated, the game will become unlocked again. The longer the users become members, the larger their game collection. In 2014, PlayStation Plus provides more than $ 1,300 games in the Instant Game Collection, while Xbox Live's competing service provides games worth $ 584. Starting March 2019 Sony will no longer include PS3 or Vita games in the collection.
PlayStation Store
PlayStation Store is a digital media store that offers a variety of downloadable content both for purchase and available for free. This includes full games, free games, add-ons, demos, music, movies, and background themes. The store is updated with new releases every Tuesday in North America and every Wednesday in the PAL region. The store accepts physical currency, PayPal transfers, and network cards.
Pre-paid network card
The PlayStation Network Card is a form of electronic money that can be used with the PlayStation Store. Each card, or ticket, contains an alphanumeric code that can be entered on the PlayStation Network to store credit in a virtual wallet. Sony designed a payment method for people without access to credit cards, and PlayStation owners who wanted to send or receive the card as a gift. Tickets are available through online retailers, convenience stores, electronic kiosks, and post office ATMs.
Cross-buy
Sony introduced 'cross-buy' in 2012, where games available for some PlayStation devices only need to be purchased once. Players downloading PlayStation 3 versions of a game can also transfer to PlayStation Vita or PlayStation 4 versions, at no additional cost, and vice versa. Users have direct access to supported titles in their digital game library, even when they upgrade to the latest system.
PlayStation Blog
PlayStation Blog is a PlayStation-focused gaming blog that is part of the PlayStation Network. Launched in June 2007, regular content includes game announcements, developer interviews, and store updates. A sub-site of a blog called PlayStation.Blog Share was launched in March 2010 and allows PSN users to send ideas to the PlayStation team about anything related to the PlayStation and vote on ideas from other submissions.
- Blogcast
The Official PlayStation Blogcast is a weekly audio program produced by the North American PlayStation blog. Podcasts usually feature Sid Shuman, Nick Suttner, Ryan Clements and Justin Massongill. The program often features guest appearances and interviews with figures in the gaming industry. The crew usually announces PlayStation content and PlayStation Store sneak together by answering questions asked by PSN users, or "player requests" as they are often called on podcasts.
Genuine programming
Beginning in the spring of 2015, PlayStation Network began producing and distributing their own original content. The first original draft program, Powers , aired on March 10, 2015 and lasted for two full seasons. The series was canceled on 3 August 2016.
In June 2017, it was announced that Sony launched the Emerging Filmmaker Program where community members could submit offers for potential television series to be aired on the PlayStation Network. Delivery was made on August 1, 2017 and five ideas will be converted into pilot episodes to be selected by the PlayStation community.
Availability
PlayStation Store is available locally in 73 countries. It is possible for unsupported areas to access the PlayStation Network if the user provides an address located in the country where PSN is officially available.
