Life and career
Early life and education
Ludlum was born in New York City, son of Margaret (nÃÆ' à © e Wadsworth) and George Hartford Ludlum. Her maternal grandmother was English. He was educated at The Rectory School then Cheshire Academy and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he earned a B.A. in the Drama in 1951. While at Wesleyan, Ludlum joins the fraternity of Alpha Delta Phi. After becoming a writer in the future, Ludlum will organize his mystery novel Matlock Paper at a fictional Carlyle University in Connecticut, Wesleyan in a thinly camouflaged manner.
Career
Before becoming a writer, he was a United States marine, actor and theater producer. In the 1950s, he produced a performance at Grant Lee's theater in Fort Lee, New Jersey. From 1960 to 1970, he arranged and produced shows at the Playhouse on the Mall at the Bergen Mall in Paramus, New Jersey. His theatrical experience may have contributed to his understanding of the energy, escape, and actions that the public wants in a novel. He once commented: "I equate good tension and theater in a very similar way, I think it's all the tension and what happens next." From that point of view, yes, I think, I'm a theatrical. "
Many of Ludlum's novels have been made into films and mini-series, including The Holcroft Covenant The Osterman Weekend , The Apocalypse Watch , The Bourne Identity The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum . Covert One: The Hades Factor , a book co-written with Gayle Lynds, was originally conceived of as a mini-series; this book evolved from Ludlum written for NBC. The Bourne film, starring Matt Damon in the title role, has been commercially and critically successful ( The Bourne Ultimatum won three Academy Awards in 2008), although the storyline departs significantly from the source material.
During the 1970s, Ludlum lived in Leonia, New Jersey, where he spent hours each day writing at his home.
Death
Ludlum died on March 12, 2001, at his home in Naples, Florida, recovering from severe burns caused by the mysterious fire that occurred on February 10.

Writing analysis and criticism
Ludlum's novels usually feature one heroic person, or a small group of Crusader individuals, in the struggle against powerful enemies whose intentions and motivations are evil and who are able to use political and economic mechanisms in frightening ways. The world in his writings is one in which global companies, shadow military forces and government organizations all conspire to defend (if it is evil) or weaken (if it is law-abiding) the status quo.
Ludlum's novel is often inspired by conspiracy theories, both historical and contemporary. He wrote that The Matarese Circle was inspired by rumors about the Trilateral Commission, and it was published only a few years after the commission was established. The portrayal of terrorism in books such as The Holcroft Covenant and The Matarese Circle reflects the theory that terrorists, not just isolated groups of extremist ideologically motivated, are actually pawns of government or private organizations that use it to facilitate the formation of authoritarian rules.
