Tour promoters (also known as concert promoters or gifted buyers) are individuals or companies responsible for organizing live concert tours or special performances. Tour promoters make job offers for certain artists, usually through artist agents or music managers. Promoters and agents then negotiate live show contracts. The majority of live show contracts are created using the standard format of the American Federation of Musician (AFM) contract standard known as the AFM Performance Agreement .

Included among the various responsibilities of the promoters work on this tour are: (1) getting a place, concert hall, theater, nightclub or booking arena; (2) setting the price of the event or tour; and (3) provide air, sea or land transportation (optional). Promoter compensation

There are no figures available regarding how many average concert promoters are each year. Like most music industry professions, compensation depends on the level of success the artist has with the promoter, the location, and what the market will provide. The promoter assumes all financial risk in the show, so compensation also depends on how successful the promoter negotiates with the vendor and makes the show sold out. In addition, in-depth knowledge of the operating market and the characteristics of their audience is a critical success factor for every tour promoter.

Industry overview

The emergence of large mega-promoter companies over the past ten years has made it much more difficult for tour promoters to get into the industry. Live Nation (formerly known as Clear Channel Entertainment) is the number one concert promoter in the world according to figures released by Pollstar Magazine in 2006. Beverly Hills, a California-based company contributed about $ 1.3 billion in the sales of box-office concerts during 2005, according to Billboard magazine tracking. Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG Live) came second with $ 417 million, followed by House of Blues (HOB Entertainment) at number three with $ 245 million. On July 5, 2006, Live Nation bought HOB Entertainment for $ 350 million, which further expanded their market share in the live-music business.

While the average ticket price jumped to about $ 57 in 2005, the number of tickets sold for the 100 biggest tours slumped 3.5%, to 36.3 million. Some fans complain to government officials, especially after they find tickets for the same concert or sporting event available - sometimes at many times face value - on secondary sellers like Stubhub.com and TicketsNow minutes after public sale begins. After hearing from several ticket buyers, Missouri's attorney general announced the country sued three ticket sellers for allegedly violating the country's consumer protection laws. On the same day, Arkansas state attorney said he was looking for documents from five resellers. And the attorney general's office in Pennsylvania also looked into the ticket sales business after receiving several hundred complaints over the recent ticket sales for the Hannah Montana concert in Pittsburgh.

Live Nation and Ticketmaster

On December 21, 2007, Live Nation announced it would acquire software and services to improve ticket sales operations, potentially positioning the company to compete directly with its long-term contractor, Ticketmaster.

Live Nation, the biggest concert promoter, and Ticketmaster Entertainment, ticket seller No. 1, announced the merger on February 10, 2009. Then on January 25, 2010 the US Department of Justice approved the merger with a provision that included that Ticketmaster sold Paciolan, the ticketing service unit and its software, to sports and entertainment company Comcast or "other buyers suitable for the department. "

Ticketmaster should also license the software to Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), the company's largest customer. With a copy of the Ticketmaster software, AEG will be able to market attractive ticketing systems to places, according to DOJ; under the terms of completion, both companies will be able to compete face to face with Ticketmaster.

College concert market

Colleges can provide "dedicated fans, good test sites, passionate workers, [and] loyal fans." The college marketplace provides a network of potential new fans that can be promoted by artists, labels, agents, and managers for promotion. Large record labels have departments dedicated to college promotions and hire students as representatives for all artists on this label. Sony Music Entertainment has a college marketing department, which promotes recordings released by Sony and by their independent label affiliates. Other music marketing companies like Promotion Center Focus on college marketing. Promotions Cornerstone employs representatives from universities across the country to carry out small-scale marketing campaigns on their campuses. Artists began to break into the college market in the 1990s. Billboard magazine published articles from the early nineties that urged artists and agents to take advantage of the college market. Artists such as Dave Matthews Band and R.E.M. played a college show to improve their presence in the college market in the nineties. Billboard magazine has emphasized the extent to which concerts on campus can help an artist in many articles.
