Renfrew Riverside redevelopment
Braehead is part of the redevelopment area of ââRiverside Renfrew, part of the broader Clyde Waterfront Regeneration project. The Braehead area includes:
- indoor shopping center;
- ice skating/curling facility;
- Scottish Maritime Museum Clydebuilt;
- Braehead Arena - along with a large open enclosed and open car park);
- Xscape adventure complex;
- a small business park.
Braehead shopping center
Shopping center opened in late 1999. It consists of 98,474 m 2 (1,059,970 sq ft) of retail and recreation floor space. The center has 110 stores in the main enclosed mall, and 10 others in the retail parks of larger stores. Braehead is also home to IKEA Renfrew store which opened in 2001 and is located near King George V Dock. At 29,000m 2 it is the largest IKEA shop in Scotland and at the opening is the largest in the UK. Since its opening, the center has proven popular among consumers (it has been blamed for the decline in the fate of stores near Paisley, Govan and Renfrew).
Located within the same building as the shopping center is Braehead Arena and other facilities such as the ice rink. In 2000 the curling facility hosted the World Championships, and in 2005 was used as a training facility when the Women's World Championships were held at Paisley.
On October 7, 2011, a father was stopped by security and questioned by police under anti-terror laws after photographing his daughter at an ice cream parlor. This resulted in social media reactions and statements from the management of Braehead and Strathclyde Police.
The planning application has been submitted to the Renfrewshire Council for 'principle permit' to build a new mixed-use development at the center in January 2013.
Braehead Soar
Braehead Soar (labeled as Intu Braehead Soar and formerly known as Xscape Braehead Renfrew) ( 55Ã, à ° 52? 45? N 4Ã,Ã,22? 17? W ) started construction in November 2004 and opened in March 2006 with its primary use to teach people how to ski or snowboard. The shape is different, more like a conventional building but with a ski slope using a sloped cube structure that projects out the roof. This Xscape displays a variety of entertainment including; Indoor Ski Slope, Football Circus, Rock Climbing, Sky Garden, Odeon Cinema, Bowling, Drop Fan, Robocoaster, Mini Golf, Lazer Station, and 'Fun Station'. The complex also has a wide range of shops (mainly outerwear), restaurants, and bars.
Snow indoor slopes Snow Factors has a 168m main slope with an additional area of ââ2,500m 2 for skiing and snowboarding. Ideal for beginners who can practice on a quieter slope with others on the same level, fully supervised. On the main slope, two Poma button lifts drag upwards and can exit either at the midpoint on the slope or at the top station of the 200m slope. The crane straps are used on the beginner's slope.
Skiers and boarders are fully provided with rental equipment, although more advanced ones will usually have their own equipment. Sledging and ice skating are provided.
Lessons can be booked for boarding and skiing. Beginners start on exclusive teaching slopes before moving to the main slopes. Initially only half of the main slant will be used before one progress to use full slope. After graduating on the ability to ski or board from full length of slopes, students are allowed full access because they are considered to have reached the recreation level.
Clothing may be rented at nominal cost, but gloves must be purchased unless provided by the participants. There are also helmets available for free use.
In March 2006, weeks before the complex was scheduled to open, the seven-screen roof of Odeon Cinemas crashed and needed extensive rebuilding. The mini-golf (which was placed under the cinema) opened in July 2006. The Odeon Cinema opened on October 19, 2007, 18 months later than planned. "Stardust" is the first movie to play in theaters. The cinema is equipped with Real D (also known as Disney Digital 3D technology) on Screen 7 with Screen 1 being the largest of the Cinema screens. The Odeon Cinema is also capable of displaying IMAX movies. The Odeon Cinema held the Scottish Pink Carpet Premiere movie Universal Pictures "Wild Child" on July 30, 2008. Both movie stars Emma Roberts (Poppy) and Alex Pettyfer (Freddie) attended, with positive opinions for Cinema and Xscape facilities.
In December 2011, SNO! The Braehead Zone was acquired by the Ice Factor Group led by Jamie Smith and renamed to Snow Factor.
Further development
To the west of Braehead and adjacent to the town of Renfrew is the area of ââRenfrew Riverside. Between the residential area and the shopping center of the Xscape complex, providing indoor ski slopes and entertainment and other recreational facilities opened in early 2006.
To the south of the shopping center is a small development called Braehead Business Park.
Transport
It can be reached from Junctions 25a (westbound) and 26 (eastbound) from the M8 highway, and has extensive public transport connections including its own bus station. Buses run from many areas connecting Braehead to Largs, Greenock, Paisley, Glasgow, Erskine, and Johnstone. The Clyde Pride the ferry service ran from Glasgow City Center to the Braehead dock down the Clyde River on a regular basis until October 2007. Boundary
Braehead is the subject of a boundary dispute between Glasgow and the council of Renfrewshire, because initially the board border divides the shopping center into two. A commanding Boundary Commission ultimately repeats the limit to include all centers in Renfrewshire because this is the original ancient boundary. The boundary stretches along the side of Old Renfrew Road and is represented by a chain fence at this point.
