The previously created fire pit is the most common form of fire pit and can be bought from the store. These are generally made of precast or metal concrete and/or a combination of a table and a metal stone. They are usually natural gas, propane (LP) or bio ethanol. Wood burning holes are also quite common but under increased supervision due to fire bans and air particulate emissions. Natural gas and propane burners in this type of pre-fabrication vessel are certified according to ANSI (America), CSA (Canada) and CE (Europe) standards. Unregulated and uncertified firehole burners are increasingly scrutinized by the authorities and denied permission. The fire hole has recommended permits for flammability and requires at least 5 meters above the fire and 16 "circumference of the ship's exterior perimeter.
Basically, to make a fire pit only the holes needed to safely contain fire. It can be as simple as digging a hole in the ground, or a complex hole in a brick or stone pillar. The wood burning pit should be placed at least ten feet (three meters) from the structure for safety. The use of fire in bad conditions should be avoided, and basic fire prevention measures apply.

The Dakota fire pit is an efficient and simple fire design that produces little or no smoke. As illustrated, two small holes are dug in the ground: one for firewood and the other to provide air. The little twigs are packed into the fire pit and the combustible material is ready on it and turned on. The fire burns from top to bottom, drawing a steady stream of fresh air out of the air during burning. Since air flows freely around the fuel, near perfect combustion is achieved, the result is a fire that burns strongly and brightly and with little or no visible smoke. The Dakota fire pit is a tactical fire used by the United States military because the flame produces low light signals, reduces smoke, and is more easily ignited under strong wind conditions.

Many cultures, especially the sedentary ones, will mow the lawn over a campfire in a grass-cutting ceremony, replacing seaweed to hide fire evidence. The elements of this ceremony remain in traditional youth organizations such as Woodcraft Folk.

Archeological meaning
The remains of fire pits store information about past cultures. The radiocarbon dating of charcoal found in old fire pits can estimate when the area was first occupied or when civilization died. The bones and seeds found in the fire pit indicate the diet in that area.
In archaeological terms, a fire pit is referred to as a feature because it can be viewed and recorded as part of a site but can not be moved without being destroyed.
