Live television is a real-time television production broadcast, when events occur, in the present. In a secondary sense, it may refer to streaming television over the internet. In many cases, direct programming is not recorded as it appears on TV, but is not trained or edited and is only displayed when recorded before it goes live. Live events include news broadcasts, morning shows, awards events, sports programs, reality programs, and occasionally episodes of scored television series.
Direct television was more common until the late 1950s, when video recording technology was invented. Due to the high cost, the adoption was slow, and some television shows remained alive until the 1970s, like soap operas. To prevent unexpected problems, the live broadcast program may be delayed, allowing the sensor to edit the program. Some programs may be broadcast live in a particular time zone and are delayed elsewhere.

Show type
From the early days of television until about 1958, live television was used heavily, except for filmed performances like I Love Lucy and Gunsmoke. Although videotape was discovered in 1956, it costs $ 300 per one hour reel (equivalent to $ 2,700 in 2017) which means it is only gradually adopted. Some genres, such as soap operas, did not completely leave the live broadcast until the mid-1970s.
In general, direct broadcast programs are more common for broadcasting content produced specifically for commercial television in the early years of the media, before technologies such as video tapes appear. Because video tape recorders (VTRs) are becoming more common, many entertainment programs are recorded and edited before being broadcasted rather than displayed directly.
Morning event
The television network provides live television broadcasts for morning shows with television programs such as: Good Morning English , BBC Breakfast , This Morning , etc. Broadcast live in the UK; Sunrise lives in Australia; Canada AM lives in Canada; and Today , Good Morning America , and CBS This Morning in the US, aired only in the Eastern Time Zone. Some daytime talk shows in the US are broadcast live before audiences in certain time zones. Events like Live with Kelly and Ryan and Wendy Williams Show only stay in the Eastern time zone, while events like ABC The View live in the zone East and Central time. The Talk on CBS airs in Eastern and Central time zones Monday through Thursday. A separate program was recorded on Thursday afternoon to be aired on Friday. Affiliates in the remaining time zones air these programs on tape delays. Most daytime talk shows and other late-night events were recorded before live performances in the studio in the morning and edited for the next broadcast.

For decades, the Academy Awards have been broadcast live in all US time zones in mainland North America. The emergence of the Internet and social media outlets (eg Facebook and Twitter, which resulted in many "spoilers") in the late 2000s, however, prompted several broadcasters to air live awards ceremonies simultaneously on both US beaches, starting with NBC in 2009 with Golden Globe Awards. The Primetime Emmy and Billboard Music Awards awards followed in the next decade.
Meanwhile, CBS began offering its affiliates in the optional Optional Mountain and Pacific time zone of the Grammy Awards in 2016 (with stations in the Pacific time zone showing a Grammy re-broadcast immediately after the live broadcast during primetime). Starting in 2017, Grammy and PrimeTime Emmy have been aired in total throughout the US, including Alaska and Hawaii. Most other awards show in the US are usually aired live in the Eastern and Central time zones. Currently, the Tony Awards is the only major award ceremony that continues the practice of delaying recording to the West Coast.
News events
Most local television news broadcasts are broadcast live in the US as they are an important medium for providing the latest weather forecasts and the latest news. Broadcast television networks in the United States usually broadcast their evening news broadcasts directly in the Eastern and Central time zones. Separate "Western Edition" is broadcast to viewers in the Pacific Time Zone. When a major news event takes place both nationally and globally, broadcast television networks will enter into regularly scheduled programs and will broadcast live "special reports" in all time zones. Local television stations break into regularly scheduled programs if there are bad weather warnings or local headlines occurring within their display area.
Cable news channels (such as CNN and Fox News Channel) live broadcasts of air during the day, and air re-broadcasts from live shows earlier during the hours of the night, except in cases where news broke out. The PBS NewsHour airs live on PBS stations in the Eastern Time Zone. Sunday morning news program in USA like Meet The Press on NBC, This Week on ABC, and Fox News Sunday live air in East Time Zone (including a small number of markets in the Central Time Zone), while CBS Sunday Morning and Face The Nation in the CBS air live in the East and Central time zones.
Cable outlets (such as CNN and Fox News Channel) incorporate the word LIVE in their network logos (also known as digital charts) when the network broadcasts live content. Some (but not all) sports cable networks will choose to enter the word LIVE somewhere in the corner of the screen. With the exception of special news reports and overseas sporting events, broadcast television networks rarely display such graphics during their live broadcasts. (Although NBC did not display the LIVE word next to their logo during the Olympic coverage when the content was immediately broadcast, a practice followed by his brother's station: NBCSN)
Local television news broadcasts display the time and temperature during their broadcast, and only show LIVE when they broadcast news or live impressions on location. Sports and other events
In the current decade, major sporting events such as the Super Bowl, World Cup and Olympics have been broadcasted live in all regions of the US, covering both prime time hours of both US coasts, along with the global live broadcast of this event according to the official international broadcaster from such games.
Other events are broadcast live across the United States including multi-network coverage of US presidential and presidential elections, US presidential inauguration, State of the Union Address, presidential news conference, Presidential Address for Nations, Parade Roses Tournament, and funerals of public and religious figures national or international. Local television broadcasts local election coverage and special events, such as large-scale parades, city marathons, funerals of local religious and religious figures, inauguration ceremonies of mayors and city governors, the installation of cardinal masses or bishops in a large Catholic church. the archdiocese, and rallies for the big sports teams. Since 2000, there have been a number of live films broadcast live. These include remakes from Fail Safe (2000) and The Quatermass Experiment (2005). Some recent examples of live episodic TV series include performances such as Melissa and Joey (2010), Whitney (2011) and Undateable (2014).
Direct television commercials are shown for the first time in 40 years to celebrate the arrival of the new Honda Accord in the UK. It was broadcast on Channel Four on May 29, 2008 at 8:10 pm during the special episode 'Come Dine With Me'. The ad featured skydivers that make up the letters of Honda's word above Spain.
Special television broadcast
Many live television programs were broadcast during the pre-videotape era. Among the most successful were the 1955 and 1956 appearances of Peter Pan , a 1954 musical adaptation of J. M. Barrie in 1904, starring Mary Martin, and Cyril Ritchard. It was a huge blow so the show was rerun and re-broadcast (this time on the video tape) with two of the same stars and most of the rest in 1960, and played back several times after that. The Peter Pan airs marks the first ever broadcast of Broadway musicals complete with most of the original players.
On December 5, 2013, NBC broadcast a live television called The Sound of Music Live! starring Carrie Underwood. The program was aired live in the East and Central time zones, and was the first live television show aired live on NBC in nearly fifty years.
