Australian national colors are green and gold . They were founded by Governor-General of Australia, Sir Ninian Stephen, on April 19, 1984 at the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette; on the advice of Prime Minister Bob Hawke.

The gold color represents the golden pill ( Acacia pycnantha ), which is the national flower of Australia. Australian national team sports uniforms are usually green and gold. Gold wreaths, and green and gold colors, are also featured on the Australian Symbol.

The Australian Government declares that, to be used properly, color is placed side by side, with no other color in between. Appropriate green and gold colors are defined as Pantone Matching System number 348C and 116C. Color is always referred to as 'green and gold', respectively.

Before 1984 three unofficial color combinations represented Australia:

  • red, white and blue,
  • blue and gold, and
  • green and gold.

According to the Australian government, "green and gold have been popular cuddled as Australia's national sporting colors" since the late 1800s. Almost every Australian national sports team currently uses them (though the color and color proportions can vary between teams and the rest of the era). The Australian cricket team first wore colors in 1899, in a loose green form, a hat presented to Australian cricketers.

Histori

Australia's first national team sporting green and gold was the Australian cricket team that toured Britain in 1899. Their outfits were traditional white, but captain Joe Darling arranged for green and gold caps and blazers to be worn for the opening game of the Ashes series. Previously, the team did not have a uniform hat or blazer colors but wearing a variety of club or country colors. The Australian cricket team continued to use the colors thereafter, and in 1908 the colors were ratified as official team colors for the Australian cricket team in the future. During subsequent discussions by members of the New South Wales Cricket Association, the colors were reportedly referred to as "gum-tree green" and "wattle-gold".

The Australasian Olympic team adopted the "green and pial" in 1908, but not all teams play in color. At the 1912 Olympics, Australian official uniforms were adopted for the first time: green vests with gold pruning, and white shorts with green and gold ornaments.

Among the soccer codes, the Australian national football team first used green and gold in 1924 with the Australian national rugby league team and the Australian national rugby team followed in 1928 and 1929 respectively.
