Star Blazers is an American animated television series adapted from the Japanese anime series Space Battleship Yamato I (1974), II (1978), and III (1980) ( ??????? , Uch? Senator Yamato ) . The Star Blazers were first broadcast in the United States in 1979. This is the first popular anime to be translated into English which has a thorough flow and storyline that requires episodes to be seen in sequence, paving the way for the future, plot-based anime translation. It also deals with more mature themes than other productions aimed at the same target audience at the time.

Plot

Star Blazers consists of three television seasons. Each is an English-language adaptation of its Japanese counterpart Space Battleship Yamato. However, the Japanese story requires more than just these three television seasons, and part of the missing part of this story takes place between Seasons Two and Three, in the movies Yamato: The New Voyage and Be Forever Yamato .

In the first season, Earth is attacked by Gamilon, a distant planet. Radiation from the Gamilon planet bomb forces everyone on Earth underground. With no way to eliminate radiation, all life on Earth will be erased within a year. The Earth then receives unexpected help from Queen Starsha from planet Iscandar, which offers a device called "Cosmo DNA" which will remove radiation. However, since Iscandar is 148,000 light years away, Starsha also submitted plans for an experimental Wave Engine Engine which, when built, will help anyone who can travel to Iscandar. On Earth, the crew is recruited, led by Captain Avatar, and the drowning old warship ( Yamato ) is converted into a spacecraft ( Argo ), equipped with Wave Motion Engine, and sent to Iscandar.

The second season lasted a year after Argo returned to Earth with Cosmo DNA and the Earth's ecosystem restored. Now facing a dangerous new enemy, the Comet Empire, led by Prince Zordar. Unlike Gamilon, who seeks to capture and colonize the Earth, Zordar just wants to conquer and annex Earth to his Empire. Desslok, the leader of Gamilon, also joined Zordar, mainly because he wanted to take revenge on Argo for destroying Gamilon. The series revolves around Argo , now commanded by Deputy Captain Derek Wildstar, working with the Defense Force to face Zordar.

In the third season, Argo was caught in the middle of a war between Galman (Reformed Gamilon Empire) and the Bolar Federation. A stray missile fired during the war caused the solar thermonuclear reaction to become uncontrollable. Unless it can be stopped, the sun will destroy the Earth in one year and the entire solar system into three. Derek Wildstar, now officially in charge of Argo , is required to help find new homes for the inhabitants of Earth.

Production and release

In 1977, before the debut of the American Blazers series, the Japanese anime Space Battleship Yamato (or Space Cruiser Yamato) as it was known at the time) dubbed into English and titled Space Cruiser . The film is sold and released in several countries, including the United States, Britain and France. The liberation of America was very limited, and eventually ended up on television in the Los Angeles area in 1978.

After this, Westchester Corporation identified the first Space Battleship Yamato anime series from 1974 as a potential "children's property" and bought the rights for the first two seasons (season three has not yet been created). Dubbing and editing are done by Griffin-Bacal Advertising and production and syndication are handled by Claster Television. Japanese elements such as series titles and scene descriptions are replaced or deleted. The new opening credit roll is created by displaying the "Star Blazers" logo. The series premiered in the San Francisco Bay Area on September 17, 1979 as part of the Captain Cosmic's Captain Cosmic event on KTVU 2. Star Blazers earliest broadcasts received high ratings, and subsequently broadcast re-contribute to building an anime fandom in northern California.

Being marketed to school-age audiences, this animated opera room is bowdlerized by American editors to meet broadcast standards and practice offices of American television stations. However, much less edits were made compared to other 1970s anime, Battle of the Planets (an edited version of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman ). Even in the form of an edited American Star Blazers retains almost all of Japan's unique characteristics in terms of content, plot, character development, and philosophy.

Major changes in transformation into Star Blazers include westernization of character names, personal violence reduction, crude language erosion and alcohol use (references to sake converted into "springs", and Doctor's continuous drunken state described only as good humor), the abolition of sexual fan services, and reduction of reference to World War II (though the wreckage of a drowning warship is still identified as the Yamato battleship in the dialogue). The most significant reference removed - and the longest single edits in the series - is part of the second episode describing the final battleship of Yamato Wars during World War II, including the image of the captain who was tied to the wheel as he descended with his ship. (This section is not in the bonus content on the Voyager Entertainment Series 1, Part II English DVD release.)

Many fans consider Star Blazers more "adult" than any other cartoon featured in the United States at the time, as a personal tragedy, a funeral scene for fallen comrades, and the extinction faced by mankind remains intact. The very Japanese theme of "the enemies of honor" is also a very important aspect of character development; in particular, the main villains of the first series, Desslok, during the second and third seasons, as well as in the next films.

The most significant change made by Griffin-Bacal is purely narrative: In the original series Yamato and his crew is considered a single entity, the narrator every week urges " Yamato , quickly to Iscandar!". In English, the importance of the name Yamato as the word will be identified by the viewers, signifies the land, the people, and the Japanese spirit, is lost, so in the Star Blazers crew is named < i> Star Force and became the focus of the show. This ship is still a history of Yamato and is referred to as such in the early episode (although the ship's backstory is edited) but renamed Argo (after the Argo from Jason and Argonauts); the crew keeps calling the "it" (not "him") Star Force and the ship becomes the only ship on which they travel.

The first two seasons of The Quest for Iscandar and The Comet Empire were broadcast in 1979 and 1980. During the third season Yamato released, original voice actors can not be contacted by American production companies. The third season (released as "The Bolar Wars" ) is played on the small test market and is not widely seen until the release on video and DVD. It remains less popular than the first two seasons. Many original English voice actors have since been tracked and interviewed for the release of the newer DVD Star Blazers.

An American version of the Star Blazers series one and two series aired in 1983 in Australia on the ABC network. The series airs Monday to Friday at 5 pm.

Remake

After four years of planning, an animated 26-episode remake of the 1974 story arc, Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199, debuted in Japan on April 7, 2012. The series was released in North America on a limited edition DVD and Blu-ray through Voyager Entertainment USA and Bandai Visual on February 27, 2014, under the title Star Blazers 2199 in Japanese with English Subtitles (created by Bang Zoom! Entertainment). The strong Japanese popularity of this remake, directed by Yutaka Izubuchi, has resulted in the production of new animated feature films (set in 2199, during a trip back to Earth), where our heroes face the fleet of the Comet Empire. Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Ark of the Stars (Uch Yamato Sen 2199: Hoshi-Meguru Hakobune) was opened nationwide in Japan on December 6, 2014. A complete series of Comet Empire story arc begins on February 25 2017 as a continuation of the previous 26 episode remakes with the title of Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 ( Uch? Senator Yamato 2202 Ai no Senshi-tachi ) with subtitle Warriors of Love. Funimation buys the rights to both remakes to create an English voice dubbing.

In addition, the feature film condensation of the 26-episode remake, Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Voyage of Remembrance (Uch? Senate Yamato 2199: Tsuioku no Kokai), will be nationally screened in Japan on October 11, 2014 and made the US Premiere at The Downtown Independent in Los Angeles on October 24, 2014 (with the title, Star Blazers 2199: A Voyage to Remember), as officially announced during Voyager Entertainment's July 2014 presentation in Anime Expo in Los Angeles and Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Live action adaptation

During the mid-1990s, Walt Disney Pictures voted for the rights to produce live-action Star Blazers film from producer Josh C. Kline. The earliest manuscript manuscript by Oscar nominated nominee Tab Murphy was leaked on the Internet in the late 1990s. The story is to recount the plot of Season One, and follow the wrong garbage flock (mostly unnamed after the original series crew) on a US-built warship Arizona on a mission to save the Earth. The project was abandoned by Disney after the departure of David Vogel, President of Disney Production. In April 2006, it was announced that another attempt to create a live-action version of the story would be made, but no film ever came out of the story.

A Space Battleship Yamato live-action movie was released in Japan on December 1, 2010, produced by Toshiaki Nakazawa and Kazuya Hamana. The film is directed by Takashi Yamazaki.

In February 2011, it was announced that a live action version of English was being worked on. Skydance Productions David Ellison is negotiating for rights. Christopher McQuarrie has been tapped to write scenarios, but no date has been announced. In October 2013, Deadline reported that McQuarrie was also inaugurated as a film director and as a joint producer along with Josh C. Kline, David Ellison and Dana Goldberg, with Shouji Nizhizaki and Paul Schwake as executive producers for Skydance. In March 2017, Ellison stated in an interview with LRM (Latino Review Media) in South by Southwest that Skydance had hired Zach Dean to write a script with McQuarrie still attached as a director, aiming to finish it when McQuarrie finished directing Mission: Impossible 6 .

American adaptation comics

To date, four American comic adaptations have been published: the five-volume series retells the original story, two comic book series, and most recently, webcomic.

West Cape Company Animation Comics

The first adaptation is a series of books that present the original first season in five volumes using original cel animations. It was published in 1983 by West Cape Co., Ltd. under their tracks, W.C.C. Comics Animation. These books use recorded essays that have been laid out and published for the Japanese market as "movie comics". Translation relies heavily on the Star Blazers English dialogue, with slight modifications. The English edition is printed in Japan and distributed by Nippan Book of Los Angeles, the American branch of Nippon Shuppan Hanbai. The title of each book includes " Original Title: Space Cruiser Yamato " as a subtitle.

Comico

The second adaptation (actually two miniseries) was published by Comico Comics in the late 1980s and served as a postscript for the second season. The plot makes use of the fact that the Season Three script has misidentified the enemy in the New Voyage flashback as the rest of the Comet Empire. In this series, it was discovered that the rear fleet of the Comet White Comet (consisting entirely of half of the entire imperial fleet) was still there and - with all the fleets of Earth (apart from Argo ) destroyed - only Argo that stands between this great enemy fleet and the Earth. In this story, the Comet Empire takes over Yamato and uses it against the Earth. The second Comico miniseries dealt with the Star Force battle against the apostate General Earth and its alien allies. Due to his weak artwork and story, the second miniseries are less acceptable than the first.

Voyager Entertainment Print

In the mid-1990s, Voyager Entertainment published 12 editions of the Star Blazers comic book before publication was suspended due to poor sales.

Voyager Entertainment webcomic

Star Blazers Rebirth is a webcomic that was previously featured on the official Star Blazers website. Though similar in the storyline, it does not get confused with the latest Yamato movie, Yamato: Rebirth . Art and the story is by Tim Eldred, who is also in charge of the Voyager Entertainment series. Earth is once again threatened by the threat from space to Earth 25 years after the first series; this time in what looks like a moving black hole. At first, the Earth government did not trust the information, on the grounds that black holes should not be able to move. However, they finally agreed to send the latest and most powerful Earth ship, Andromeda II , to be investigated. Upon reaching its destination, Andromeda II was quickly destroyed with all hands on board, though not before sending data to Earth. Surprised by the disaster and the lack of response from the Earth government, Wildstar remains inoperable. She is now in her 40s, with gray hair and beard growing with a deliberate homage to the late Captain Avatar. He is haunted by nightmares, both from his past and his alternate past, nightmares coming but different people die, or familiar faces have new names. Eventually Wildstar and Sandor poured their wealth and energy into rebuilding Argo that was almost destroyed. The ship is wrapped in ice and left floating in Earth's orbit at the end of Final Yamato . Since most of the old surviving bridge crew Argo are now captains of their own ships, many of the new crew members are children or grandchildren of the original Argo crew. The evacuation of the earth into many colonies has made the forces of Earth stretching too far, with some colonies beginning to escape from the control of the Earth under Captain Nenezich's command. Briefly about supplies, Argo goes to the galactic center in an effort to learn more about the mysterious black holes and rashes of attacks on the Earth's colonies.

Legacy

Television critic Matt Zoller Seitz of Vulture recommends the series in 2013 as one of eight major television series or mini-series people who most likely have never seen it before, stating that "this epic series of updated warship settings sailed across the galaxy to save The dreaded earth remains the main masterpiece [1970s era dubbed the Japanese cartoons] - and the serial story precedes its time. "In Seitz's 2016 book written with Alan Sepinwall titled TV (The Book) , they wrote that this series or their original Japanese partners would make a list of the top 100 shows of all time if they did not exclude foreign television from the list, citing the lack of sufficient knowledge for television outside the United States.
