Black River Entertainment began in late 2007 by Nashville session musicians Jimmy Nichols (James Ginnetti), his wife Tonya Cochran Ginnetti, and Pennsylvania-based oil magnate Terry and Kim Pegula. Black River's first signing was former RCA recording artist Jeff Bates, who had previously reached the top 40 with his three songs. Shortly after Bates signed a contract with Black River, label president Jimmy Nichols (along with Kenny Beard and Mickey Jack Cones) produced a self-titled Bates album released in April 2008.
During preparations for the Bates release, Black River began their search for the next potential artist. Singer/songwriter, Sarah Darling, was found through her MySpace music page. Darling has announced his name to the public when he became a finalist E! Entertainment Entertainment Television The Entertainer, hosted by Wayne Newton. The label signed Darling and moved into the studio in the summer of 2008 to record his debut album, Every Monday Morning (released on June 16, 2009). The single, "Jack of Hearts" successfully debuted in top 20 top CMT. The country's first top-40 debut (and the second label), "Home to Me," peaked in the fall of 2012, after he left the label.
After the success of two artists, they signed the third, Emma Jacob, in February 2009. Nichols produced his album, along with his manager, Lex Lipsitz, who also manages Kate and Kacey. The single Emma, ââ"Julianna," has been an inspiration for teenage girls across America. Black River did most of their recordings in the historic studio, "Ronnie's Place," which is located in their building in Nashville. It was previously owned by country music legend, Ronnie Milsap.
Black River signed his big name to date in April 2011, when veteran singer Craig Morgan signed a contract with the label. Morgan, who has composed fifteen top-40 singles on the country charts during his career, has previously been with BNA Records, Broken Bow Records and Atlantic Records before joining Black River. Morgan gave Black River his first single ("This Ole Boy") to reach the Top 40 of Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart.
On October 8, 2012, CMT reports that country music artist Kellie Pickler has signed a contract with the label, and has started working with her on her fourth studio album. The Woman I Am was released on November 11, 2013.
In January 2013, Black River Entertainment added the artist, The John King Band to the list. The song of 5 new songs John King Band, "Something in the Water" is available digitally everywhere. In December 2013, the label added Kelsea Ballerini to their list, and released their debut single, "Love Me Like You Mean It," in 2014. It served as the lead-off single for her debut album, The First Time , which was released on May 19, 2015. "Love Me Like You Mean It" reached number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart for the week ending July 4, 2015, giving Black River their first number one hit in chart it and also get the distinction label as the first independent label to bring the female artist debut single to the top of the country charts; they are also the first independent label to have female artists at number one since Taylor Swift's "Private" led in December 2012.
