History

The city council of Vancouver initially came up with the concept of having most of the city center-centered drinking centers in one area in the late 1990s. The initiative comes with an extension of late night liquor service until 3:00 am, and according to the Vancouver Police report, has resulted in a steady increase in attacks and calls for police assistance in the area.

Prior to the establishment of the current Entertainment District, in what is now Granville Mall is home to a number of theaters, which gave the Granville Street streets the nickname "Theater Row" for years. The closure of the theaters over the years (and the conversion of some of them into their current nightclub form), however, has left no cinema operational in the former Theater Row area on November 4, 2012 (the date of closure the last remaining theater there, Granville 7 Cinemas).
