The PlayStation Store is also a digital media store available for Sony PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable game console users through PlayStation Network. This store offers a variety of downloadable content for both purchases and is available for free. Available content includes full games, additional content, playable demos, themes and game/movie trailers.

Access

This store can be accessed via icons on XrossMediaBar on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable, via Dynamic Menu on PlayStation 4, and icons on LiveArea on PlayStation Vita. This service is also available online through the Sony Entertainment Network website.

Master PSN Account

A master's "PlayStation Network" account is required to access the PlayStation Store. The logs of all previously purchased items, known as "Download List", record every full download activity of the PlayStation Store account. A guest user can use their master account Downloads List to download free content or to purchase content on other consoles, however, one account can only be used on up to two consoles. It was previously five, but in November 2011, Sony reduced this to two. The latest firmware must be installed on the console to access the PlayStation Store.

Each master account is associated with an online virtual wallet "" that funds can be added to. The wallet is then debited when the purchase is made from the store. Money can be added to the wallet through different payment systems, although some of them are not available in all countries.

Currency

All purchases on the PlayStation Store are made in the user's local currency using a 'wallet' system whereby funds are added to the wallet - either in the specified denomination or the amount determined by the current transaction price - then debited from the account wallet when the user makes a purchase, the funds added to the PS Store is non-refundable.

Users can add funds to their wallets in various ways, the most common being with a credit or debit card. Users in many areas can also purchase PlayStation Network Cards or Ticket denominations assigned from retailers including supermarkets or video game stores. These funds are redeemed on the PlayStation Store when the user enters a unique 12-digit code found on the card to the PlayStation Store. Nintendo itself then adopted this currency system for their successful eShop. However, Store accounts are locked areas and generally only accept credit cards billed and PlayStation Network Cards purchased from the same country selected during the registration process, which can not be changed thereafter.

Starting July 2013, store users in the UK can fill their wallets via mobile phones, with users paying the funds through their phone bills.

PlayStation Store for PS3

The PlayStation Store was launched on the PlayStation 3 on November 11, 2006 and is accessible via icons under the PlayStation Network category of XMB. There are four different versions of the PlayStation Store: Asia, Europe (including Oceania and the Middle East), Japan, and North America (including Latin America). Content may vary by country. No PlayStation Store in China.

Multitasking

On March 22, 2007, downloading the background becomes possible while watching videos stored on HDD, listening to music, viewing photos, using a web browser and playing PS1, or offline PS3 games. Officially 16 downloads can be queued at once. Download status can only be checked on XMB under the "Network" category. If the messaging service is enabled, a pop-up message will appear in the upper-right corner of the screen to inform the user that the download is complete.

Cross platform content such as Embedded PlayStation games, PS Vita games and demos, and mini, can be transferred from PlayStation 3 to PS Vita via cable connection.

Connectivity with PlayStation Portable

Some cross-platform store content such as Embedded PlayStation games and demos can be transferred from the PlayStation 3 to the PlayStation Portable Memory Stick via a USB connection.

After the installation of firmware version 5.00 was released on October 15, 2008, the PlayStation Store can be accessed directly from the PSP without the need to use PC or PS3 as an intermediary. It can be accessed under the PlayStation Network category on the XMB PSP. However, users who do not have methods to connect wirelessly can still use the PlayStation Store on PC using Media Go.

Redesign

Following feedback from a large number of PlayStation Network users, the redesigned PlayStation Store version was launched on April 15, 2008 through a firmware update. The new design is OS based rather than the previous Web Store-based design that allows the Store to process information faster.

A small update to the store was released during Sony E3 2009 press conference. This update makes the top pages rotate images (including links) on a regular basis, and change the navigation sound.

A major redesign of the PlayStation Store was announced in September 2012, bringing with it a revised navigation structure and a new search system. New stores have been developed to bring gaming and video content together and make it easier for users to find what they're looking for. Content will be integrated into each game list, rather than separate categories for items such as add-ons, themes, and other downloadable content. The latest designs are much less focused on text, and combine high resolution artwork and fine animation for featured content. The new redesign was launched in Europe on October 22, 2012. Shortly after its launch in the UK, the Store interface returned to the old design due to issues like long load time and slow navigation, while other countries in Europe maintained a new interface despite this problem. The redesign was released in North America on November 2, 2012.

PlayStation Store for PSP

At the initial launch of the PlayStation Store, PSP owners can only access the PSP portion of the store via a PS3 connection. This means that only PSP owners who also have a PS3 can access PSone games and other content exclusively available on the PlayStation Network. However, the PSP-oriented PlayStation Store (PC) is launched in Asia on September 20, 2007 at the Tokyo Game Show and can be accessed via an Internet browser supported on Windows PCs. The PC store is available for the US and Europe on November 20, 2007.

A year later on October 15, 2008, System Software 5.00 was released for PSP. For the first time owners of PSP can also access stores directly on their PSP console. Two weeks later on October 28, 2008, the PC store was relaunched, this time accessible via PSP Media Manager 3. As with PS3 games, PSP and PSone downloaded from the PlayStation Store can only be used up to 2 separate PSPs enabled on accounts whose content is purchased by.

Access to PlayStation Store from PSP has been disabled in all countries by 2016. However, access to PlayStation Network, for multiplayer games, downloading content from download lists and activating content will remain active.

Media Go

During E3 2009, Sony announced the launch of Media Go , a Windows application used to access, download and install games and software to connected PSPs, as well as Sony Walkman devices and Sony Ericsson phones. The software can also be used to manage and transfer other media such as music, videos and photos stored on the PSP and other compatible devices. Files are transferred to the PSP via USB connection and saved to flash memory card (or internal flash storage in PSPgo). The software is initially offered as an alternative to existing PSP Media Manager (and various other Media Manager applications for Sony devices) and can also be used to manage and transfer other media such as music, videos and photos stored on the PSP and other compatible devices. However, Sony soon replaced the Media Manager software from the software with Media Go.

Starting today, the Store is no longer available from Media Go, and redirected to the PC web store. This software was discontinued in 2017.

PlayStation Network Downloader

A DRM tool called PlayStation Network Downloader is also required to download content from PlayStation Store to PC. When downloading store content, *.xpd files are first downloaded to a user's computer and then unlocked by the PlayStation Network Downloader, which downloads content directly to a connected PSP via a USB cable. This 'DRM' tool prevents users from storing store content directly to their PC and illegally distributing content. Currently, this software is also only compatible with certain Microsoft Windows operating systems.
