Histori

Mandel West Palm Beach Public Library is the oldest public library in Palm Beach County, Florida. It started as a Free Reading Room for the City of West Palm Beach, located in Union Congregational Church on the corner of Datura and the Olive Streets. In 1895, Commodore Charles John Clarke, a Palm Beach yachtman, donated a two-storey Palm Beach Yacht Club building to West Palm Beach. Collections from the Free Reading Room and a $ 100 donation from Henry Flagler created the city's first library.

On January 26, 1924, City's first permanent library, an artistic Spanish-style building, opened next to the Women's Club and a band bun at Flagler Park, facing the Intracoastal Waterway. Despite the severe damage from the 1928 Okeechobee storm that caused more than half of the book was destroyed and two feet of lake water and mud on the floor, the Memorial Library remained open, serving residents of West Palm Beach until the spring of 1962.

On April 30, 1962, the new city library, designed by architect Norman Robson, was dedicated and opened with many public comments about its modern and colorful exterior decorating panels. The name of the library at 100 Clematis Street was changed to West Palm Beach Public Library. Planned to allow expansion for at least twenty years.

On February 21, 2012, the Mandel Foundation awarded a $ 5 million grant to the West Palm Beach Library Foundation for the improvement of library programs and services. At this time, West Palm Beach Public Library was renamed Mandel West Palm Beach Public Library.

Library Foundation

The West Palm Beach Library Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) and independent organization of West Palm Beach City, was formed in 2000 with an initial mission of working with West Palm Beach City in a private- public partnership to build a new library. The foundation, free of political processes or influence, secures financial and goods donations to improve programs, services, collections and technologies that are not reachable by the city's operating budget.

In 2009, the Foundation began to revitalize fundraising efforts to support and improve the new Library's programs, services, technology and collections.

Through a strong partnership with the Mandel Public Library, the West Palm Beach Library Foundation determines where support will have the greatest impact. While public money or taxpayers provide the basic operational budget of the Library, they are not sufficient to provide full access to the information, programs and services that members need and the value of the community. Foundation support is needed to help Libraries improve their technology, collections, services, and programs.
