History

The New York Comic Con is a non-profit event produced and run by ReedPOP, a division of Reed Exhibitions and Reed Elsevier, and is not affiliated with the San Diego non-profit Comic-Con, or Big Apple Convention, then known as Big Apple Comic-Con owned by the Entertainment Wizard. ReedPOP is involved with other events, including Chicago Comic & amp; Entertainment Expo (C2E2) and PAX Dev/PAX East/PAX Prime. ReedPop and New York Comic Con were founded by Greg Topalian, former senior vice president of Reed Exhibitions.

The first repentance was held in 2006 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Due to the lack of Reed Exhibitions experience with the comic conventions (they mainly deal with professional trade fairs before 2006), attendance is much more than anticipated, and the main exhibition hall can only hold 10,000. Despite a crowded Friday afternoon, tickets went on sale due to low pre-registration numbers (4,500), and non-professional counts and exhibitors. The main exhibition hall reaches capacity Saturday morning and is locked by firefighters until people leave, with lockout closing in the afternoon. Major guests, including Kevin Smith and Frank Miller, were unable to enter the main hall. The line to enter the convention wrapped around the building by waiting two hours to enter, and many were turned away. Ticket sales for Sunday suspended. Reed announced that additional space would be obtained for the 2007 show.

The second counter was held in 2007, with booking conventions doubling the floor area from the previous year's room, and moving to the top level of the Javits Center. Performances on Friday again only open for the industry and press until 4 pm, when opened to the public. Due to better planning, ticket sales are first controlled, and the convention is sold out for Saturday. Lines began to form on Saturday midnight to enter the convention, and on Saturday morning, there was a 2 hour wait in 20 degree temperatures to enter. The crowd was a problem at Artists Alley, located outside the main convention floor, causing it to be moved to the main floor for 2008. The American Anime Awards, hosted by New York Comic Con, was held on February 24 at the New Yorker Hotel during Comic Con.

The third counter held in 2008 moved to April, growing steadily (extending space by 50%), and occupying most of the main levels at the Javits Center. Stan Lee was awarded the first New York Comic Legend Award in Times Square Virgin Megastore before Comic Con. Programming Children's Day added to the convention on Sunday with the help of Kids's Comic Con. The fourth cons were held in 2009 back in February and featured a charity auction to support The Hero Initiative.

Due to scheduling conflicts with Javits Center for spring dates and the creation of Chicago Comic & amp; Entertainment Expo by Reed, New York Comic Con was moved to October for Halloween starting in 2010. The New York Anime Festival, previously a separate show created by Reed, was also merged into Comic Con. Registration for the joint event was 190 percent ahead of the 2009 figure, the convention room increased by an additional 40 percent, and the anime festival was moved to a lower level than Javits. The main floor of the convention center is divided by large construction areas due to repairs to the Javits Center.

Intel Extreme Masters Global Challenge - New York takes place at Comic Con 2011. It features eSport tournaments for games like StarCraft II , League of Legends , and Counter-Strike .

In 2011, the convention expanded to four days. The first day of the convention was initially limited to the press, professionals, and fans who purchased a four-day ticket. This changed in 2013, when Thursday passed, was sold for the first time. In addition, attendance at New York Comic Con grew to over 130,000, which puts the convention presence on par with San Diego Comic-Con for the first time.

By 2014, the presence of NYCC reached 151,000, surpassing the SDCC to become the largest comic book convention in North America; the latter can not grow further because of the place capacity limit and the 130,000 presence cap.

In 2016, it was announced that everyone attending NYCC 2016 will be required to complete the "Fan Verification" profile. The event organizers explained that this step was implemented in an effort to reduce the number of brokers and resellers who bought tickets. Fan Verification will only open from May 20 to June 14, and tickets purchased can only be given to someone with a profile. It was also announced that NYCC will no longer sell VIP tickets, and the show tickets will not be sold to any retailer or event leading to NYCC 2016.

In 2017, the 3-day and 4-day ticket sales for the event are discontinued. Just one day, children's tickets Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Sunday will be sold for the event.
