Personal life

Prior to Harmer enrolled in the Architecture program, he had worked for Yuncken Freeman Architects from 1972 to 1974. After graduating, he spent several years working for Sidell Gibson Partnership Architects and JR Harris Architects in England. However, in 1980, Harmer worked for Buchan Laird & amp; Buchan Architects before he developed his own company called Harmer Architecture in Collingwood, Australia. Until 2010 his company has won 14 RAIA awards. Harmer also holds a private CASA pilot license.

Harmer Architecture won the RAIA regional prize for Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Center in Sale, Victoria, Australia in 2004. In order to win this prize, their project should make an important contribution to the Victoria region. Thus, their success led the jury to announce the importance of their development for Sale people. The jury also acknowledged that the company, "... responded outside a brief report to provide an urban building that opens the sights and routes from the main road to the historic but neglected Sales Harbor."

Altona Meadows/Laverton_Uniting_Church_1993 "> Altona Meadows/Laverton Uniting Church 1993

In 1993, Harmer won the second RAIA award with the development of the monumental Altona Meadows/Laverton Church. The building's design is inspired from the aircraft hangar due to aviation industry recognition in Melbourne. Six curved pieces of iron support the main part of the building in which, "The curved roof shape has been selected for functional and economic reasons [where] the main worship space is located centrally below the highest part of the roof with secondary spaces grouped at each end... "There is also a wall that can be moved inside the building, which can create more open or closed spaces. According to Goad, Harmer's choice of using bold shapes, strong colors and graphic structure expression allows one to return to a functional structural era when the church reflects the progress of the postwar liturgy.

Wedge House 1999

After building Wedge House in 1999, Harmer Architecture received the Commendation for Outstanding Architecture award from RAIA and the New Zealand Wool Winner award from the Interior Design Award. Wedge House is one of the smallest buildings in Melbourne with a width of only 1.8 meters long and 16 meters long. The main materials used are concrete and rubber, but the stainless steel layer and ionized copper sheets are also used for the main entrance and windows. Rollo mentioned that "This two-storey house responds to wedge shape both in plan and elevation [and] its design almost mirrors smoothly to two-story streetscape and Victorian-style buildings and buildings."

The project recognizes Harmer's hard work in challenging himself to build a magnificent architecture that is not only extraordinary, but also practical enough to ensure no space is wasted. For example, the office area is separated from the master bedroom by wardrobe, closet, and storage. The kitchen and bathroom are located on the smallest end and the ground floor; However, a free-standing ladder wall would create an open gap between floors making it appear wider. Interesting feature about this house is a dining bench built on one wall. Finally, the widest end of the first floor is made into a living room because of the large glass wall that opens to the west and south bringing views of the city for family and friends to enjoy.

Wedge House is currently home to an architect of one of Melbourne's leading architectural practices and bicycle collections.

Darebin Arts & amp; Entertainment Center 1995

The Darebin Arts & amp; The Entertainment Center is built with different sections to represent the unique themes and functions of different programs. Therefore, this entertainment center can be used for various purposes such as using it as a place for celebration or just as a theater. It is important to mention that "... the roof of a sawtooth in a meeting room and studio refers to the history of the Preston theater industry [and] is expressed as a line of concrete fins from which the auditorium is suspended. The entertainment center is built along the axis of walking north-south on the site. Axis plans are designed at 9 meters with 9 meter grid with settings keeping the car park in mind.In addition, the axis connects to the City Garden behind the building.
