PlayStation 3 officially slips into its twilight years as Sony ...
src: static.techspot.com

PlayStation 3 ( PS3 ) is a home video game console developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is a PlayStation 2 successor, and is part of the PlayStation console. It was first released on November 11, 2006, in Japan, November 17, 2006, in North America, and March 23, 2007, in Europe and Australia. PlayStation 3 mainly competes with consoles such as Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles.

The console was first officially announced on E3 2005, and released in late 2006. It is the first console to use Blu-ray Disc as its primary storage media. The console is the first PlayStation to integrate social gaming services, including being the first to introduce Sony's social gaming services, PlayStation Network, and remote connectivity with the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita, capable of controlling the console from the device. In September 2009, the PlayStation 3 Slim model was released. It no longer provides the hardware capabilities to run PS2 games. It's lighter and thinner than the original version, and features a redesigned logo and marketing design, as well as a small initial change in software. Variations of Super Slim are then released in late 2012, further refining and redesigning the console.

The system has a slow start in the market but is recovering successfully, especially after the introduction of the Slim model. His successor, PlayStation 4, was released later in November 2013. On September 29, 2015, Sony confirmed that PlayStation 3 sales should be stopped in New Zealand, but the system remains manufactured in other markets. Delivery of new units to the United States ends in October 2016. Toward 2017, Japan is the last region where a new unit is still produced until May 29, 2017 when Sony confirmed the PlayStation 3 was discontinued in Japan.

History

Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation 3 to the public on May 16, 2005, at E3 2005, along with a boomerang prototype design from Sixaxis controllers. The functional version of the system was not there, or at the Tokyo Game Show in September 2005, although demonstrations (such as Metal Gear Solid 4: Patriot Weapon ) were held at both events on device development software and devices hard comparable personal computer. Video footage based on predicted PlayStation 3 specifications is also shown (especially Final Fantasy VII technology demos ).

The initial prototype shown in May 2005 featured two HDMI ports, three Ethernet ports, and six USB ports; However, when the system was demonstrated again a year later on E3 2006, it was reduced to one HDMI port, one Ethernet port and four USB ports, presumably to cut costs. Two hardware configurations were also announced for the console: 20 GB models and 60 GB models, each worth US $ 499 (EUR499) and US $ 599 (EUR599). The 60 GB model is the only configuration for displaying HDMI ports, Wi-Fi internet, flash card readers and chrome trims with logos in silver. Both models are announced for worldwide release simultaneously: November 11, 2006, for Japan and November 17, 2006, for North America and Europe.

On September 6, 2006, Sony announced that the PAL PlayStation 3 region launch will be delayed until March 2007, due to the shortage of materials used in Blu-ray drives. At the Tokyo Game Show on September 22, 2006, Sony announced that it will include an HDMI port on a 20 GB system, but the chrome trim, flash card reader, silver logo and Wi-Fi will not be included. Also, the launch price of the Japanese 20 GB model is reduced by more than 20%, and the 60 GB model is announced for an open price scheme in Japan. During the show, Sony showed 27 playable PS3 games running on the final hardware.

Launch

PlayStation 3 was first released in Japan on November 11, 2006, at 07:00. According to Media Create, 81,639 PS3 is sold in 24 hours since its introduction in Japan. Immediately after its release in Japan, the PS3 was released in North America on November 17, 2006. Violent reports surrounded the release of the PS3. A customer was shot, camping robbed at gunpoint, customer shot in shooting with BB rifle, and 60 participants camped over 10 systems.

The console was originally planned for a global release until November, but in early September the release in Europe and the rest of the world was delayed until March. With it being a last-minute delay, some companies have taken deposits for pre-orders, in which Sony notifies customers that they are eligible for a full refund or can continue pre-order. On January 24, 2007, Sony announced that the PlayStation 3 will go on sale on March 23, 2007, in Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Africa and New Zealand. The system sold about 600,000 units in the first two days. On March 7, 2007, PlayStationÃ, 3 60Ã,® GB was launched in Singapore for S $ 799. The console was launched in South Korea on June 16, 2007, as a single version equipped with 80Ã,® GB and IPTV hard drives.

Slim Model

After speculation that Sony is working on a 'slender' model, Sony officially announced the PS3 CECH-2000 model on August 18, 2009, at Sony Gamescom's press conference. New features include a slimmer form factor, reduced power consumption, and a quieter cooling system. It was released in a large region in September 2009. At the same time, a new logo was introduced to the console to replace the previous "Spider-Man" keyword (named because they use the same font) as the logo of the movie- Sony's current movie Spider-Man ), with the new word "PS3" evoking the design of the PlayStation 2 wordmark replacing the capitalist letters PlayStation 3.

Super Slim model

In September 2012 at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced that the redesign of the new, sleeker PS3 (CECH-4000) will be released in late 2012 and will be available with a 250 GB or 500 GB hard drive. Three versions of the Super Slim model are revealed: one with a 500Ã, GB, hard drive with a 250 × hard drive, GB not available in the PAL region, and a third with 12 × flash storage available in the PAL region, and in Canada. 12 GB storage model is upgraded with official official 250 GB hard drive. Vertical booths are also released for the model. In the United Kingdom, the 500 GB model was released on September 28, 2012; and the 12 GB model was released on October 12, 2012. In the United States, the PS3 Super Slim was first released as a bundled console. The 250 GB model is incorporated with the Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Uncharted 3 Game of the Year and was released on September 25, 2012; and the 500 GB model combined with Assassin's Creed III and released on October 30, 2012. In Japan, the black Super Slim model was released on October 4, 2012; and the white Super Slim model was released on November 22, 2012. The Super Slim model is 20 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than the Slim model and features a manual slide shear cover, not a slot-loading motorized disc cover from the Slim model. The white Super Slim model was released in the United States on January 27, 2013 as part of the Instant Game Package . The Garnet Red and the Azurite Blue color model was launched in Japan on February 28, 2013. The Red Garnet version was released in North America on March 12, 2013 as part of the God of War: Ascension package with 500GB of storage and contains God of War: Ascension and God of War Saga . The Azurite Blue model was released as an exclusive GameStop with 250GB of storage.

Games

The PlayStation 3 was launched in North America with 14 titles, with three more titles released before the end of 2006. After the first week of sales, it was confirmed that Insomniac Games' Insurgency: Fall of Man was the top-selling launch game in North America. The game is highly praised by many video game websites, including GameSpot and IGN, both being awarded the PlayStation 3 Game of the Year award for 2006. Some titles missed the launch window and were delayed until early 2007, such as Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion , FEAR and Sonic the Hedgehog . During the Japanese launch, Ridge Racer 7 was the best-selling game, while Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire also fared well in sales, both of which were offers from Namco Bandai Games. PlayStation 3 was launched in Europe with 24 titles, including those not offered in the North American and Japanese launches, such as Formula One Championship Edition , MotorStorm and Virtua Fighter 5 . Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm was the most successful title of 2007, and both games received a sequel in Resistance 2 and MotorStorm : Pacific Rift .

At E3 2007, Sony is able to showcase their upcoming video games for PlayStation 3, including Heavenly Sword Lair , Ratchet & amp; Clank Future: Tools of Destruction , Warhawk and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune ; all released in the third and fourth quarters of 2007. It also showcased a number of titles set for release in 2008 and 2009; especially Killzone 2 , Famous , Gran Turismo 5 Prolog , LittleBigPlanet and SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation . A number of exclusive third parties are also featured, including highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , along with other high profile third-party titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV , < i> Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare , Assassin's Creed , Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5

Sony has launched their budget series from the PlayStation 3 title, known as Greatest Hits range in North America, Platinum range in Europe and Australia and The Best range in Japan. Among the titles available within the budget range include Resistance: Human Fall , MotorStorm , Uncharted: Drake Fortune , Rainbow Six: Vegas , Call Of Duty 3 , Assassin's Creed and Ninja Gaiden Sigma . In October 2009 Metal Gear Solid 4: Patriot Weapon , Ratchet & amp; Clank Future: Tools of Destruction , Devil May Cry 4 , Army Two , Battlefield: Bad Company and Middle Night Club: Los Angeles has also joined the list.

As of March 31, 2012, there are 595 million games sold for PlayStation 3. The best-selling PS3 games are Grand Theft Auto V, Gran Turismo 5, The Last Of Us, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Stereoscopic 3D

In December 2008, CTO Blitz Games announced that they will present stereoscopic 3D games and watch movies for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with their own technology. It was first shown publicly on the PS3 using Sony's own technology in January 2009 at the Consumer Electronics Show. Journalists are shown Wipeout HD and Gran Turismo 5 Prolog in 3D as a demonstration of how the technology can work if implemented in the future. The 3.30 firmware update officially allows the PS3 title to play in 3D, which requires a compatible view to use. The 3.50 system software update prepares it for 3D movies. While the game itself must be programmed to take advantage of 3D technology, titles can be patched to add functionality retroactively. Titles with such patches include Wipeout HD , Pain , and Super Stardust HD .

Hardware

The PlayStation 3 is convex on the left side, with the PlayStation logo upright, when vertical (top side convex when horizontal) and has a shiny black color. The PlayStation designer Teiyu Goto stated that the Spider-Man-font-inspired logo "is one of the first elements decided by SCEI president Ken Kutaragi and the logo may have been the motivating force behind the PS3".

On March 22, 2007, SCE and Stanford University released Folding @ home software for PlayStation 3. This program enables PS3 owners to lend the computing power of their consoles to help learn the process of folding proteins for disease research.

Use in supercomputers

PS3 hardware has also been used to build supercomputers for high-performance computing. The Fixstars solution sells the Yellow Dog Linux version for PlayStation 3 (originally sold by Terra Soft Solutions). RapidMind generated a flow programming package for the PS3, but was acquired by Intel in 2009. Also, on January 3, 2007, Dr. Frank Mueller, Associate Professor of computer science at NCSU, grouped 8 PS3. Mueller commented that 256 MB of system RAM is a limitation for this particular application and is considering trying to retrofit more RAM. The software includes: Fedora Core 5 Linux ppc64, MPICH2, OpenMP v 2.5, GNU Compiler Collection and CellSDK 1.1. As a more cost-effective alternative to conventional supercomputers, the US military has purchased groups of PS3 units for research purposes. Retail PS3 Slim Units can not be used for supercomputers, because the PS3 Slim does not have the ability to boot into third-party OS.

In December 2008, a group of hackers used a set of 200 PlayStation 3 computers to decode SSL authentication.

In November 2010, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) created a powerful supercomputer by connecting together 1,760 Sony PS3s that included 168 separate graphics processing units and 84 parallel coordination servers in a parallel array capable of performing 500 trillion floating-point operations per second (500 TFLOPS ). As built, Cluster Condor is the 33rd largest supercomputer in the world and will be used to analyze high-definition satellite images.

Technical specifications

The PlayStation 3 features a slot-loading 2x speed Blu-ray Disc drive for games, Blu-ray movies, DVDs, CDs and other optical media. Initially available with hard drives of 20 and 60 GB (20 GB models not available in the PAL region) but various sizes up to 500 GB have been available since then (see: model comparison). All PS3 models have a 2.5 "user-selectable SATA hard disk.

The PlayStation 3 uses the Cell microprocessor, designed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM, as its CPU, consisting of a 3.2 "PowerPC Power Processing Element (PPE) and eight Synergic Processing Elements (SPE). The eighth SPE is disabled to increase chip results Only six out of seven SPEs are accessible to developers because the seventh SPE is reserved by console operating systems Graphics processing is handled by Nvidia RSX 'Reality Synthesizer', which can produce resolutions from 480i/576i SD to 1080p HD PlayStation 3 has 256Ã , MB main memory DRAM XDR and 256Ã, MB GDDR3 video memory for RSX.

The system has Bluetooth 2.0 (with support for up to seven Bluetooth devices), Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, and HDMI 1.4 installed in all current shipping models. Wi-Fi networks are also built-in on all but 20 GB models, while flash card readers (compatible with Memory Stick, SD/MMC and CompactFlash/Microdrive media) are built-in on 60 GB and CECHExx 80 GB models.

Model

PlayStation 3 has been produced in various models: original, Slim, and Super Slim. Successive models have added or removed features.

Controllers and accessories

Many accessories for the console have been developed. These accessories include Sixaxis and DualShock 3 wireless controllers, Logitech Driving Force GT, Logitech Cordless Precision Controller, BD Remote, PlayStation Eye camera, and PlayTV DVB-T tuner/digital video recorder accessory.

At Sony E3 press conference in 2006, the standard Sixaxis wireless controller was announced. This controller is based on the same basic design as the DualShock 2 PlayStation 2 controller but is wireless, has no vibration capability, has a built-in accelerometer (which can detect motion in three directional axes and three rotation axes, six total, then Sixaxis name) and has several tweaks cosmetics.

At a press conference at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced DualShock 3 (DUALSHOCK 3 branded), PlayStation 3 controller with the same functionality and design as Sixaxis, but with vibration capability included. The hands-on account describes the controller as feels heavier than the standard Sixaxis controller and is capable of performing vibration styles comparable to DualShock 2. It was released in Japan on November 11, 2007; in North America on April 5, 2008; in Australia on 24 April 2008; in New Zealand on May 9, 2008; on the European mainland on July 2, 2008, and in the UK and Ireland on July 4, 2008.

During E3 2009, Sony unveiled plans to release motion controllers then named PlayStation Move at GDC 2010. The album was released on September 15, 2010, in Europe; September 19, 2010, in North America and October 21, 2010, in Japan.

On October 13, 2010, Sony announced the official surround sound system for the PS3 through the official YouTube PlayStation channel.

PlayStation 3 can also use the DualShock 4 controller initially via USB cable, but Firmware update 4.60 enables wireless connection.

Statistics related reliability

According to Ars Technica, the number of failed PlayStation 3 consoles is in the normal failure rate in the consumer electronics industry; a 2009 study by SquareTrade, a warranty provider, found a two-year failure rate of 10% for the PlayStation 3s.

In September 2009, the BBC Watchdog television program broadcast a report investigating the issue, calling it a "yellow death lamp" (YLOD). Among the consoles that fail, they find that it typically occurs 18-24 months after purchase, while the standard Sony warranty covers one year after purchase. After this time period, PlayStation 3 owners can pay Sony a fixed fee for an updated console.

Sony claims that, according to statistics of the console returned, about 0.5% of the console reportedly shows YLOD. In response to reports broadcast on television, Sony issued a document criticizing the accuracy and conclusions of the program; specifically that the error is evidence of a production defect. The document also complained that the report did not match the tone and could damage the Sony brand name.

Software

System software

Sony has incorporated the capabilities for the operating system, referred to as System Software , to be updated. Updates can be obtained in several ways:

  • If PlayStation 3 has an active Internet connection, updates can be downloaded directly from PlayStation Network to PlayStation 3 and then installed. The system with Internet enabled will automatically check online for software updates every time the console starts.
  • Using an external PC, users can download updates from the official PlayStation website, transfer them to portable storage media and install them on the system.
  • Some game discs come with system software updates on disk. This may be caused by games requiring updates to run. If so, the software can be installed from disk.

The original PlayStation 3 also includes the ability to install other operating systems, such as Linux. This is not included in the newer slim models and has been removed from all older PlayStation 3 consoles with the release of firmware update 3.21 in April 2010. Its functionality is now only available to native console users who prefer not to update their system software beyond the 3.15 or who have installed the third version, the modified and unofficial version instead.

Graphical user interface

The standard PlayStation 3 version of XrossMediaBar (spoken Cross Media Bar, or XMB abbreviated) includes nine categories of options. These are: Users , Settings , Photos , Music , Videos , TV/Video Services , Games , Network , PlayStation Network and Friends (similar to PlayStation Portable media bar). The TV/Video Services Category is for services like Netflix and/or if PlayTV or torne is installed; the first category in this section is "My Channel", which allows users to download various streaming services, including Sony's own stream service, Crackle and PlayStation Vue. By default, the What's New section of the PlayStation Network is displayed when the system starts up. PS3 includes the ability to store various master and secondary user profiles, manage and explore photos with or without music slide shows, play music and copy audio CD tracks to connected data storage devices, play movies and video files from hard disk drives, optical disks ( Blu-ray Disc or DVD-Video) or optional USB mass storage or Flash cards, compatibility for USB keyboards and mice and web browsers supporting compatible file download functionality. In addition, UPnP media will appear in each of the audio/video/photo categories if a compatible media server or DLNA server is detected on the local network. The Friends menu allows letters with emoticons and attached picture features and video chats that require an optional PlayStation Eye or EyeToy webcam. The Network menu allows online shopping through the PlayStation Store and connectivity to the PlayStation Portable via Remote Play.

Digital rights management

The PlayStation 3 console protects certain types of data and uses digital rights management to limit data usage. Games and content purchased from the PlayStation Network store are governed by the Digital Rights Network Management PlayStation (NDRM). NDRM allows users to access data from up to 2 different PlayStation 3s that have been enabled using the user's PlayStation Network ID. PlayStation 3 also limits the transfer of videos protected by downloaded copies from their stores to other machines and states that video protected by copy "may not be recoverable correctly" after certain actions after making a backup such as downloading a new copy-protected movie.

Photos management

Photo Gallery

Photo Gallery is an optional app for viewing, creating and grouping photos from PS3, which is installed separately from the system software at 105 MB. It was introduced in the 2.60 software system version and provides various tools for sorting and displaying system images. The main feature of this application is to organize the photos into groups according to various criteria. Important categorization is the color, age, or facial expression of people in photos. Slideshows can be viewed with the app, along with music and playlists. The software is updated with the release of 3.40 software system version that allows users to upload and browse photos on Facebook and Picasa.

PlayMemories Studio

PlayMemories is an optional 3D (as well as standard) stereoscopic photo display, installed from the PlayStation Store at 956 MB. This app is dedicated specifically to 3D photos and features the ability to enlarge the 3D environment and change the angle and perspective of the panorama. This requires system software 3.40 or higher; 3D Photos; 3D HDTV, and HDMI cable for 3D images to be viewed properly.

Video services

Editors and video uploaders

The new app was released as part of a 3.40 software system version that allows users to edit videos on PlayStation 3 and upload them to the Internet. The software includes basic video editing tools including the ability to crop video and add music and text. Videos can then be displayed and uploaded to video sharing websites like Facebook and YouTube.

Video on demand

In addition to the video services provided by Sony Entertainment Network, the PlayStation 3 console has access to a variety of third party video services, depending on the region:

Since June 2009, VidZone has offered free streaming music video services in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In October 2009, Sony Computer Entertainment and Netflix announced that the Netflix streaming service will also be available on PlayStation 3 in the United States. A paid Netflix subscription is required for this service. This service is available in November 2009. Initially users should use a free Blu-ray disc to access the service; However, in October 2010 the requirement to use the disk to gain access has been removed.

In April 2010, support for MLB.tv was added, allowing MLB.tv customers to watch regular season games directly on HD and access new interactive features designed specifically for PSN.

In November 2010, access to video and social networking sites MUBI was enabled for European, New Zealand and Australian users; this service integrates social networking elements with rental or streaming video subscriptions, allowing users to watch and discuss movies with other users. Also in November 2010, VUDU video rental services, NHL GameCenter Live, and Hulu Plus subscription services were launched on the PlayStation 3 in the United States.

In August 2011, Sony, in partnership with DirecTV, added the NFL Sunday Ticket. Then in October 2011, Best Buy launched an app for its CinemaNow service. In April 2012, Amazon.com launched the Amazon Video app, which is accessible to Amazon Prime customers (in the US).

After reviewing the PlayStation and Netflix collaborations, Pocket-Lint says "We've been using the Netflix app on Xbox as well and, as well as that, we think the PS3 version might have an edge here." and stated that owning Netflix and LoveFilm on the PlayStation is "amazingly good".

In July 2013, YuppTV OTT player launches its branded app on the PS3's computer entertainment system in the United States.

OtherOS Support

PlayStation 3 was originally shipped with the ability to install an alternate operating system in addition to the main system software; Linux and other Unix-based operating systems are available. The hardware allows access to six of the Seven Synergistic Process Elements of the Cell microprocessor, but not the RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' graphics chip.

The 'OtherOS' functionality is not present in the updated PS Slim model, and this feature is later removed from previous versions of the PS3 as part of a 3.21 firmware update version released on April 1, 2010; Sony calls security issues an excuse. 3.21 firmware update is mandatory for access to PlayStation Network. This removal caused some controversy; because updates remove the officially advertised feature from a sold product, and bring up some class action lawsuits intended to make Sony restore features or compensate.

On December 8, 2011, US District Judge Richard Seeborg dismissed the last count of the class action lawsuit (another claim in the lawsuit had previously been dismissed), stating: "As a matter of law, [..] the plaintiff has failed to accuse facts or articulate a theory that may be Sony's responsibility. "

In January 2014, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit partially overturned the dismissal and had sent the case back to the district court.

Leap year bug

On March 1, 2010 (UTC), many original "original" PlayStation 3 models around the world experienced errors related to their internal system clock. The error has many symptoms. Initially, the main problem seems to be the inability to connect to the PlayStation Network. However, the root cause of the problem has nothing to do with the PlayStation Network, because even users who have never been online also have problems plays offline games installed (which question the system timer as part of startup) and use system themes. At the same time many users noted that the console clock had returned to December 31, 1999. The show was dubbed ApocalyPS3 , a play on the word apocalypse and PS3, short for the PlayStation 3 console.

The displayed error code is usually 8001050F and affected users can not sign in, play games, use dynamic themes and view/sync trophies. The problem only stays in the 1st to 3rd generation of the original PS3 units while the newer "Slim" models are not affected due to different internal hardware for hours.

Sony confirmed that there was an error and stated that it narrowed down the issue and continued to work to restore the service. On 2 March (UTC) 2010, the original PS3 model owner can connect to PSN successfully and hours no longer show December 31, 1999. Sony states that the affected model incorrectly identifies 2010 as a leap year, because the bug in the BCD Method stores the date. However, for some users, hardware operating system hours (especially updated from the internet and not related to internal clocks) need to be updated manually or by syncing them over the internet.

On June 29, 2010, Sony released a PS3 3.40 system software update, which enhanced internal clock functionality to take into account the length of the leap year.

Features

PlayStation Portable Connectivity

PlayStation Portable can connect with PlayStation 3 in many ways, including in-game connectivity. For example, Formula One Championship Edition , racing games, shown on E3 2006 using PSP as a real-time rearview mirror. In addition, users can download original PlayStation game format from PlayStation Store, transfer and play it on PSP and PS3 itself. It is also possible to use the Remote Play feature to play this and some PlayStation Network games, remotely on a PSP over a network or internet connection.

Sony has also shown PSP to play video content from PlayStation 3 hard disks on ad hoc wireless networks. This feature is referred to as Remote Play which is located under the browser icon on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Since then, long-distance games have been expanded to allow remote access to the PS3 via PSP from any wireless access point in the world.

PlayStation Network

PlayStation Network is an integrated online multiplayer game and digital media delivery service provided by Sony Computer Entertainment for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable, announced during the PlayStation 2006 Briefing Business meeting in Tokyo. This service is always connected, free, and includes multi-player support. This network allows online games, PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, and other services. PlayStation Network uses the original currency and PlayStation Network Card as seen on PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home.

PlayStation Plus PlayStation Plus>

PlayStation Plus (commonly abbreviated PS and sometimes referred to as PSN Plus ) is a premium PlayStation Network subscription service officially launched on E3 2010 by Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA. Rumors about the service have been a gamble since Kaz Hirai's announcement at TGS 2009 about the possibility of paid services for PSN but with PSN services currently available. Launched with PS3 3.40 firmware and PSP 6.30 firmware on June 29, 2010, the paid subscription service provides users with enhanced services on the PlayStation Network, above the current PSN service that is still available with all of its features. These improvements include the ability to have demos and game updates automatically download to the PlayStation 3. Customers also get early or exclusive access to some beta, game demos, premium download content, and other PlayStation Store items. North American users also get free subscriptions to Qore. Users can choose to purchase a one-year or three-month subscription to PlayStation Plus.

PlayStation Store

PlayStation Store is an online virtual market available to PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PlayStation Portable (PSP) game consoles via the PlayStation Network. The Store offers a variety of downloadable content for both purchases and is available for free. Available content includes full games, additional content, playable demos, themes and game and movie trailers. This service can be accessed via icons on XMB on PS3 and PSP. The PS3 shop is also accessible on the PSP via Remote Play connection to the PS3. The PSP store is also available via PC app, Media Go. On September 24th, 2009, there were over 600 million downloads from the PlayStation Store worldwide.

The PlayStation Store is updated with new content every Tuesday in North America, and every Wednesday in the PAL region. In May 2010 it was changed from Thursday to allow PSP games to be released digitally, closer to their time released at UMD.

What's New

What's New was announced at Gamescom 2009 and released on September 1, 2009, with PlayStation 3 3.0 system software. This feature replaces the existing [Information Board], which displays news from the PlayStation website associated with the user's area. The concept is further developed into the main PlayStation Network feature, which interacts with [Status Indicator] to display tickers of all content, excluding recently played content (currently only in North America and Japan).

The system will display the What's New screen by default instead of the [Games] menu (or [Video] menu, if movie is inserted) on startup. What's New has four parts: "Our Choices", "Last Played", up-to-date information, and new content available on the PlayStation Store. There are four types of content that display New screen and links to, in sections. "Recently Played" displays games the user has just played and online services only, whereas, other sections can contain website links, links to play videos and access to selected sections on the PlayStation Store.

PlayStation Store icons in the [Game] and [Video] sections act similar to What's New screen, except that they only show and link to games and videos on the PlayStation Store.

PlayStation Home

PlayStation Home is a virtual 3D social networking service for PlayStation Network. Home allows users to create custom avatars, which can be prepared realistically. Users can edit and decorate a private apartment, avatar, or club house with free, premium, or winning content. Users can shop for new items or win prizes from PS3 games, or Home activities. Users can interact and connect with friends and customize content in a virtual world. The house also acts as a meeting place for users who want to play multiplayer games with others.

A closed beta began in Europe from May 2007 and extended to other territories shortly thereafter. The house is suspended and expanded several times before it initially releases. Outage

On April 20, 2011, Sony shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity for long intervals, revealing on April 23 that this was caused by "external interruptions to our system". Sony later revealed that personal information of 77 million users may have been taken, including: name; address; country; email address; Date of birth; Login/password PSN/Qriocity, and handle/ID online PSN. It also states that it is possible that user profile data, including the purchase history and billing address, and the PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answer may have been obtained. There is no evidence that credit card data has been taken, but the possibility can not be ruled out, and Sony advises customers that their credit card data may have been obtained. In addition, the credit card number is encrypted and Sony never collects a three-digit CVC or CSC number from the back of the credit card needed to authenticate multiple transactions. In response to the incident, Sony announced the "Welcome Back" program, a 30-day free PlayStation Plus membership for all PSN members, two free downloadable PS3 games and a one-year free registration in identity theft protection program.

Cost of sales and production

Although its PlayStation predecessors are so dominant over the competition and very profitable for Sony, the PlayStation 3 had an unfortunate start, and the chairman and CEO of Sony Sir Howard Stringer initially could not convince investors about the turnaround in his fortune. The PS3 lacks the unique gameplay of the more affordable Wii that becomes the generation's most successful console in terms of units sold. Furthermore, the PS3 must compete directly with the Xbox 360 which has an early head of the market, and as a result the platform no longer has exclusive titles enjoyed by PS2 like Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy series ( on cross platform games, the Xbox 360 version was generally considered to be superior in 2006, although in 2008 the PS3 version has reached parity or exceeded), and it took longer than expected for the PS3 to enjoy strong sales and near gaps with the Xbox 360 Sony also continues to lose money on every PS3 sold until 2010, although the redesigned "slim" PS3 has been trimming this loss ever since.

The initial production cost of the PlayStation 3 is estimated by iSuppli for US $ 805.85 for the 20 GB model and US $ 840.35 for the 60 GB model. However, they are priced at US $ 499 and US $ 599 respectively, which means that the unit may have been sold with an estimated loss of $ 306 or $ 241 depending on the model, if the cost estimate is correct, and thus may have contributed to Sony's game division posted a loss of operations of 232.3 billion yen (US $ 1.97 billion) in the fiscal year ending March 2007. In April 2007, soon after these results were published, Ken Kutaragi, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, announced plans to retire. Various newsagents, including The Times and The Wall Street Journal, reported that this was due to bad sales, while SCEI maintained that Kutaragi had planned his retirement for six months prior to the announcement.

In January 2008, Kaz Hirai, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, suggested that the console can start generating profits in early 2009, stating that, "the next fiscal year starts in April and if we can try to achieve that in the next fiscal year it will be great things "and that" [profitability] is not a definite commitment, but that's what I want to try and shoot. " However, market analyst Nikko Citigroup predicted that the PlayStation 3 could be profitable in August 2008. In a July 2008 interview, Hirai stated that the goal was for the PlayStation 3 to sell 150 million units in the ninth year, surpassing the PlayStation 2 sales of 140 million in nine years on the market. In January 2009 Sony announced that their game division was profitable in Q3 2008.

Since the launch of the system, production costs have decreased significantly as a result of the gradual discontinuation of Emotion Engine chips and decreased hardware costs. The cost of making Cell microprocessors has fallen dramatically as a result of moving to the 65Ã, nm production process, and Blu-ray Disc diodes have become cheaper to produce. Starting January 2008, each unit costs about $ 400 to produce; As of August 2009, Sony has reduced costs by a total of 70%, which means Sony only costs about $ 240 per unit.

Critical reception

The start of the PlayStation 3 reviews after launch was critical of high prices and the lack of quality games. Game developers consider architecture to be a difficult program. However, the PS3 praised its hardware including home theater Blu-ray capabilities and potential graphics.

Critical and commercial acceptance to the PS3 increased over time, following a series of price revisions, a Blu-ray win over HD DVD, and the release of some well-received titles. Ars Technica 'The original launch review gave the PS3 only 6/10, but the second review of the console in June 2008 ranked it 9/10. In September 2009, IGN named the PlayStation 3 of the 15th best game console of all time, behind both competitors: Wii (10th) and Xbox 360 (6). However, the PS3 has won IGN's "Console Showdown" - based on which console offers the best gaming options released each year - in three of the four years since it started (2008, 2009 and 2011, with Xbox winning in 2010). IGN decided on the PlayStation 3 to have the best line-up game of 2008, based on their review score compared to the Wii and Xbox 360. In the comparison section by PC Magazine ' Will Greenwald on June 2012, the PS3 was chosen as a better overall console compared to the Xbox 360. Pocket-lint says about the console "The PS3 has always been a brilliant game console," and that "For now, it's just about the best media device for the money. "

Original model

The PS3 was number eight on PC World's "The Top 21 Tech Screwups of 2006" PC magazine list, which was criticized for being "Overdue, Expensive and Incompatible". GamesRadar ranked the PS3 as the top item in the feature on game-related PR disasters, asking how Sony managed to "take one of the most anticipated game systems of all time and - within a year - turn it into an object hate revered by the rest of the internet", but added that although system problems have "untapped potential". Business Week concluded public opinion by stating that "more impressed with what it can do [PlayStation 3] than with what it currently does".

Developers have also found machines difficult to program. In 2007, Gabe Newell of Valve said "PS3 is a total disaster on many levels, I think it's very clear that Sony is losing track of what customers and developers want". He continued, "I would say, even on this late date, they just have to cancel it and do the repetition.Lay say, 'This is a terrible disaster and we are sorry and we will stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop it'". Doug Lombardi VP of Marketing for Valve has since stated that Valve is interested in developing for the console and is looking to hire talented PS3 programmers for future projects. He then reiterated Valve's position, "Until we have the ability to get the PS3 team together, until we find people who want to come to Valve or who are in Valve who want to work on it, I do not really see us moving. that platform ". At Sony E3 2010 press conference, Newell made a direct appearance to retract the previous statement, citing Sony's move to make the system more developer friendly, and announced that Valve will develop Portal 2 for the system. He also claims that the inclusion of Steamworks (the Valve system to automatically update their software independently) will help to make the PS3 version of the best console version of Portal 2 in the market.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has criticized the high cost of developing PS3 and low speed attachment and back to the Xbox 360 and Wii. He believes these factors drive developers away from working on the console. In an interview with Kotick's The Times, "I'm worried about Sony, the PlayStation 3 lost a bit of momentum and they did not make it easy for me to support the platform." He continued, "It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and Xbox just sell better. The game results in a better return on invested capital (ROIC) on Xbox than on the PlayStation." Kotick also claims that Activision Blizzard may stop supporting the system if the situation is not addressed. "[Sony has] to cut the [PS3] price, because otherwise the installation tariff tends to slow down.If we are realistic, we may have to stop supporting Sony." Kotick received strong criticism for the statement, especially from BioWare developers who questioned the wisdom of the threatened move, and referred to the statement as "ridiculous."

Despite the initial negative press, some websites have provided excellent system reviews especially regarding the hardware. CNET United Kingdom praised the system that says, "The PS3 is a versatile and impressive home entertainment equipment that lives up to the hype [...] The PS3 is well worth the expensive price." CNET gave it a score of 8.8 out of 10 and selected it as the number one "must-have" gadget, praising its powerful graphics capabilities and stylish exterior design while criticizing the limited choices of available games. In addition, both Home Theater Magazine and Ultimate AV have provided a very lucrative Blu-ray playback system, stating that the playback quality exceeds that of many of today's standalone Blu-stand Ray players Disc.

In an interview, Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment argued for choosing an elaborate architecture. Hexus Gaming reviews the PAL version and summarizes the review by saying, "when PlayStation 3 matures and developers start really pushing it, we'll see the PlayStation 3 appear as the preferred console for gaming." At GDC 2007, founder of Shiny Entertainment, Dave Perry stated, "I think Sony has made the best machine. This is the best hardware, without question".

Model and slim color change

PlayStation 3 Slim received very positive reviews and increased sales; less than 24 hours after its announcement, PS3 Slim took the number one spot on Amazon.com in the video game section for fifteen consecutive days. It regains the number one position one day later. The PS3 Slim also received praise from PC World, giving 90 out of 100 praises for new repackaging and new value provided at lower prices and praising its composure and reduction in its power consumption. This is in stark contrast to the original PS3 launch where he was given the number eight position on the "The Top 21 Tech Screwups of 2006" list.

CNET awarded the PS3 Slim four of five stars that praised Blu-ray's ability, 120GB hard drive, free online games service, and more affordable prices, but complained about the lack of backward compatibility for PlayStation 2 games. TechRadar gave the PS3 Slim four and a half star of five praised the new smaller size and summed up his review stating "Overall, the PS3 Slim is a phenomenal device. It is amazing that something so small can do so many things". However, they criticize the exterior design and build quality in relation to the original model.

Eurogamer calls it "a product where cost cutting has been - in general - done tastefully" and says "This is not a big win for Sony."

Super Slim Model

The Super Slim model of the PS3 has received positive reviews. The Sponge gaming website praised the new Super Slim's tranquility, stating "The most visible sound comes when the drive seeks new areas of the disk, like when it starts loading games, and this rarely happens." They added that fans are quieter than Slim, and then praised the new size is smaller and lighter. Critics are placed on a new disk loader, stating: "The cover can be moved by hand if you want, there is also a release button to do the work for you, but no software is removed from the triangle button menu in Xross Media Interface Bar (XMB). you have to close the cover by hand, which can be a little confusing if it's upright, and the PS3 will not start reading the disk unless you [close the cover]. "They also say there is no real retail price decline.

The CNET media technology website gives Super Slim 4 of 5 new stars ("Very Good"), saying "PlayStation 3 Super Slim shrinks powerful gaming machines into smaller packages while maintaining the same features as its predecessor: a great game library and a powerful array of streaming services [...] ", while also criticizing" cheap "designs and disk loaders, states:" Sometimes [the cover] does not catch and you feel like you are using one of the old credit card stamp machines In short, it feels cheap. You do not realize how convenient to install autoloading trays until they disappear. Is it to cut costs or save space, this step is ultimately a step backward. "Critics also say the price, saying the cheapest Super Slim model is still more expensive than the cheapest Slim model, and that smaller sizes and larger hard drives should not be considered an upgrade when har d drive on the Slim model is easily removed and replaced. They praised that Super Slim's hard drive model is "the easiest." Simply gliding from the side panel shows the drive space, which can be quickly opened. " They also stated that while the Super Slim model can not be improved, it could be an indicator of what is to come. "It may not be revolutionary, but the Super Slim PS3 is the same impressive machine in a much smaller package. It seems like there is no reason for existing PS3 owners to improve, but for prospective buyers of the PS3, Super Slim is probably the way to go if you can handle does not have a slot-loading disk drive. "

Pocket-Lint gave Super Slim a very positive review by saying "It's a much more affordable, brilliant game, video and second-to-none media player." They think it is "A nice and dazzling console that will serve you for years to come up with used games and even new releases." Without a doubt, if you do not have a PS3, it's time to buy. " They gave Super Slim 4 and a half stars out of 5.

The T3 technology magazine gave the Super Slim model a positive review, stating the console is almost "nostalgic" in design similarity to the original "fat" model, "Although we do not know if it will play PS3 games or Blu-ray discs however, the look and feel of the new PS3 Slim is a real homage to the original PS3, minus the excess weight we will be worried about the durability of the top loading tray that feels like it can be directly pulled from the console, but in the end it all feels like a Sony nostalgic way to pull out the current generation console as anticipation for PS4.
