Melman grew up in Chicago. As a child, he sells ice cream and beans on the Chicago coast and even sells eggs from door to door. He did not succeed in attending three different colleges. At 14, he started working for the family restaurant business. After his father rejected his request to buy a partnership, he attacked himself. Persistence took him to Orzoff, who was the first businessman to take him seriously.
