smart TV , sometimes referred to as connected TV or hybrid TV , is a television with integrated Internet and interactive "Web 2.0" features. Smart TV is a technological convergence between computers and a set of flatscreen televisions and set-top boxes. In addition to the traditional functions of television sets and set-top boxes provided through traditional broadcast media, the device can also provide Internet TV, interactive online media, over-the-top content (OTT), as well as on-demand streaming media, and network access home.
Smart TV should not be confused with Internet TV, IPTV, or web television. Internet TV refers to the reception of television content over the Internet rather than traditional systems (terrestrial, cable and satellite) (although the Internet itself is accepted by this method). IPTV is one of the Internet television technology standards for use by television broadcasters. Web television is a term used for programs created by various companies and individuals to broadcast on Internet TV.
On smart TV, the operating system is already loaded or available via set-top box. The software or "app" application can be loaded into the device, or updated or installed on demand through the app or market store, in the same way that the app is integrated on a modern smart phone.
The technology that enables smart TVs is also incorporated in external devices such as set-top boxes and some Blu-ray players, game consoles, digital media players, hotel television systems, smartphones, and interactive devices connected to other networks that utilize television-type displays output. This device lets viewers find and play videos, movies, TV shows, photos and other content from the Web, cable or satellite TV channels, or from local storage devices.

In the early 1980s, "smart" television receivers were introduced in Japan. The addition of an LSI chip with memory and a character generator to a television receiver allows a Japanese audience to receive a mix of programming and information transmitted through a backup channel of a broadcast television signal. The patent was issued in 1994 (and extended the following year) for "smart" television systems, related to data processing systems, via digital or analogue networks. In addition to connecting to a data network, a key point is its ability to automatically download the required software routines, according to user requests, and process their needs. Smart TV devices facilitate traditional content curation by combining information from the Internet with content from TV providers. The Service offers users the means to track and receive reminders about events or sporting events, as well as the ability to change channels for immediate viewing. Some of the smart TV platforms come packaged, or can be extended optionally, with the capabilities of social networking technology. The possibilities of marketing and trade offered by Smart TV are sometimes summarized in terms of t-commerce. Even in sets that are not configured off the shelf to do so, the default security size is often weak and will allow hackers to easily get into the TV.
Security and privacy
There is evidence that smart TVs are vulnerable to attack. Some serious security bugs have been found, and some successful attempts to run malicious code to gain unauthorized access are documented on the video. There is evidence that it is possible to gain root access to the device, install malicious software, access and modify configuration information for remote control, remote access and modify files on TV and USB drive attached, access camera and microphone. There is also concern that hackers may be able to turn on the microphone remotely on a smart TV and can eavesdrop on private conversations.
Anticipating the growing demand for antivirus for smart TV, some security software companies have worked with partners in the digital TV field on the solution. In this paper it seems that there is only one antivirus for smart TV available: 'Neptune', a cloud-based antimalware system developed by Ocean Blue Software in partnership with Sophos. However, the Avira antivirus company has joined the Labwise digital TV testing company to work on software to protect against potential attacks. Hackers have abused Smart TV capabilities like operating source code for applications and unsecured connections to the Internet. Passwords, IP address data, and credit card information can be accessed by hackers and even companies for advertising. The company caught is Vizio. Confidential documents, codenamed Vault 7 and dates from 2013-2016, include details on CIA software capabilities, such as the ability to compromise with smart TV.
Reliability
Samsung's high-end Smart TVs stop working for at least seven days after the software update. Application providers rarely upgrade Smart TV apps to the latest version; for example, Netflix does not support older TV versions with the new Netflix upgrade.
Access restricted
Internet websites can block access of smart TV to content at will, or customize the content that each platform will accept. The devices that support Google TV have been blocked by NBC, ABC, CBS, and Hulu from accessing their Web content since the Google TV launch in October 2010. The Google TV device was also blocked from accessing programs offered by Viacom subsidiaries.
According to a report from the In-Stat NPD research group, in 2012 only about 12 million US households have their Web-enabled Internet-connected TVs, although an estimated 25 million households have a set with network capabilities installed. In-Stat predicts that by 2016, 100 million homes in North America and Western Europe will use television that combines traditional programming with internet content.
The number of households using over-the-top television services has been increasing rapidly over the years. By 2015, 52% of US households subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu Plus; 43% of pay-TV subscribers also use Netflix, and 43% of adults use multiple streaming video services on demand at least monthly. In addition, 19% of Netflix customers share their subscriptions with people outside their household. Ten percent of adults at that time showed interest in HBO Now.
