Incorporation, PlayStation release, and North American expansion

Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. (SCEI) was co-founded by Sony and its subsidiary Sony Music Entertainment Japan in 1993 to handle the company's venture into the video game hardware market. The original PlayStation console was released on December 3, 1994, in Japan.

The North American operating company, Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA), was originally founded in May 1995 as a division of Sony Electronic Publishing. Located in Foster City, California, the North American office was initially led by Steve Race.

On August 7, 1995, Race suddenly resigned and was appointed CEO of Spectrum HoloByte three days later. He was replaced by Sony Electronics veteran, Martin Homlish. This proved to be the start of a tremendous managerial turnaround, with SCEA through four presidents in one year. The PS Console was released in the United States on September 9, 1995.

Company affairs

President and CEO of SIE is John (Tsuyoshi) Kodera, replacing Andrew House, who resigned in October 2017. The house served as chairman until the end of 2017. Kutaragi retired from his executive position at SIE on June 19, 2007, and holds the honorary chair of the company. Shawn Layden and Jim Ryan currently serve as chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios and Head of Global Sales and Marketing, respectively. Shuhei Yoshida is president of SIE Worldwide Studios today.

Headquarters

SIE currently has three main headquarters around the world: global and American regional headquarters in San Mateo, California, United States (Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC); K? Nan, Minato, Tokyo, Japan (Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. and Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia) are controlling operations in Asia and also the former headquarters for Sony Computer Entertainment; and London, United Kingdom (Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe) which controls operations in Europe and Oceania. SIE also has offices and smaller distribution centers in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, San Diego, California USA; Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Melbourne, Australia; and Seocho-gu, Seoul, South Korea and Liverpool, England, UK.

Approval game

SIE evaluates and approves games for its console. The process is tighter than for Nintendo Seal of Quality, and developers submit the concept of games to Sony early in the design process. Each SIE unit has its own evaluation process; SIEE, for example, approved Billy the Wizard for its customers but SIEA did not. Companies sometimes impose additional restrictions, such as banning PS and PS2 games from porting to PSP without 30% of the new content on Sony consoles.

Hardware

PlayStation

SCEI produces the PlayStation line of video game hardware that consists of consoles and handhelds. Sony's first wide home console release, PlayStation (code name "PSX" during development,), was originally designed to be a CD-ROM add-on for the Nintendo Super NES game console (aka "Super Famicom" in Japan), in response to add- on for competing platforms such as TurboGrafx-CD and Sega CD (sold as CD-ROM System and PC CD System in Japan respectively). When the prospect of releasing the system as an add-on is disbanded, Sony redesigns the machine into a stand-alone unit.

The PlayStation was released in Japan on December 3, 1994, and later in North America on September 9, 1995. At the end of the 12-year console production cycle, the PlayStation has sold 102 million units.

PlayStation 2

The second home console of SCEI, PlayStation 2 (PS2) was released in Japan on March 4, 2000, and later in North America and Europe in October and November 2000, respectively. The PS2 is powered by a proprietary center processor, Emotion Engine, and the first video game console that has a DVD playback function that comes out of the box.

The PS2 consists of DVD drives and is sold in the US for US $ 299. SCEI received strong criticism after the launch of PS2 because the games were released as part of the launch, the difficulties presented to video game designers, and users who struggled to port the Sega Dreamcast game to the system. However, regardless of this complaint, the PlayStation 2 receives widespread support from third-party developers over its lifetime in the marketplace.

On December 28, 2012, Sony confirmed that it will stop production of the PS2 through a gradual process that begins in Japan - the continued popularity of consoles in markets such as Brazil and India means that PS2 products will still ship, while games for the Console released in March 2013. PS2 stands as the best-selling home video game console in history, with a total of 155 million consoles sold.

Writing for the ExtremeTech website at the end of 2012, James Plafke described the PS2 as revolutionary and stated that the console "turns the game industry [ed] on its head":

In addition to being the next-gen next-gen console, as well as providing many, many people with their first DVD player, PlayStation 2 is launched on something from Golden Age in the non-PC gaming industry. Game technology is becoming very sophisticated... Sony seems to know the right route to popularity, turning the console with the most powerful hardware of that generation into a giant of success.

PlayStation Portable

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is SCEI's first launch to the small handheld console market. Its development was first announced during the E3 SCE conference in 2003, and was officially inaugurated during their E3 conference on May 11, 2004. The system was released in Japan on December 12, 2004, in North America on March 24, 2005, and in Europe and Australia on September 1, 2005. The console has seen two major redesigns, with new features including smaller sizes, more internal memory, better quality LCD screens and lighter weight.

PlayStation 3

The launch date for PS3 was announced by Hirai at the pre-Electronic Entertainment Expo conference held at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, USA, on May 8, 2006. The PS3 was released in Japan on November 11, 2006, and the US date is November 17, 2006. Journal of technology observed that Sony had followed what Microsoft was doing with the Xbox 360, and produced the PS3 in two versions: one with a 20GB hard drive and the other with a 60GB hard drive.

The PS3 uses a unique processing architecture, Cell microprocessor, proprietary technology developed by Sony along with Toshiba and IBM. The graphics processing unit, RSX 'Synthesis Reality', jointly developed by Nvidia and Sony. Several variations of the PS3 have been released, each with a slight difference in hardware and software, and each of them is represented by the varying sizes of included hard disk drives.

PlayStation Vita

PS Vita is the PlayStation Portable successor. It was released in Japan and other parts of Asia on December 17, 2011, and later in Europe, Australia and North America on February 22, 2012.

Internally, Vita has a 4-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor and a 4-core SGX543MP4 graphics processing unit, as well as LiveArea software as its main user interface, which succeeds XrossMediaBar.

PlayStation 4

The PS4 was announced as the successor to the PS3 and was launched in North America on November 15, 2013, in Europe on November 29, 2013 and in Japan on February 23, 2014.

Described by Sony as a "next generation" console, the PS4 includes features such as social enhancement, a second-screen option involving devices like the PlayStation Vita handheld, membership service, and compatibility with Twitch's live streaming platform.

Following the January 2014 announcement by the Chinese government that the 14-year-old game console ban in the country will be lifted, the PS4 is scheduled to become the first Sony video game console officially and officially released in China since the PlayStation 2 - the ban came into force in 2000 to protect mental health young adult. Around 70 game developers, including Ubisoft and Koei, will serve Chinese PlayStation users.

The Chinese release date and pricing details were announced in early December, with January 11, 2015, confirmed by SCEI. The maker announced that the PS4 and Vita consoles will be released in China, and the manufacturer's package will also consist of a 500GB hard drive and controller.

The 20th anniversary of the original PS console is celebrated on December 6, 2014, with the release of a limited edition PS4 anniversary edition with an aesthetic design reminiscent of the original PlayStation 1994.
