History
The Staples Center has been referred to as "a bargain agreement"
Long before the construction of the Staples Center was broken, plans for the arena were negotiated between elected city officials, and real estate developer Ed Roski from Majestic Realty and Philip Anschutz. They had acquired the Los Angeles King's hockey team in 1995 and in early 1996 looked for a new home for their team, which then played at the Inglewood Forum.
Majestic Realty Co. in collaboration with AEG was exploring the Los Angeles area for available land to develop the arena when they were approached by Steve Soboroff, then president of the LA Recreation and Parks Commission. Mr Soboroff requested that they consider building an arena in downtown Los Angeles adjacent to the convention center. The proposal tickled Roski and Anschutz and soon plans to develop the arena, the current Staples Center, designed.
Months of negotiations took place between Philip Anschutz and city officials with Ed Roski and John Semcken of Majestic Realty Co. who spearheaded negotiations for real estate developers. The talks are debated at certain times and real estate developers threaten to withdraw altogether on more than one occasion. The main opposition came from Councilor Joel Wachs, opposing the use of public funds to subsidize the proposed project and board member Rita Walters, who objected to its parts.
In the end, the developers and city leaders reached an agreement and in 1997, the development became chaotic and the Staples Center opened a year later. It was privately funded at a cost of US $ 375 million and was named for the Staples, Inc. supply company, which is one of the central corporate sponsors who pay the naming rights. Arena opened on 17 October 1999, with Bruce Springsteen & amp; E Street Band concert as its inaugural event.
On October 21, 2009, the Staples Center celebrates its 10th anniversary. To commemorate the event, the official website of the venue nominated the 25 biggest moments of the arena from the first ten years with fans voted in the top ten.
During the late summer of 2010, modifications were made to the arena, including an updated dressing room for Clippers, Kings and Lakers and the installation of a high-definition, high-end video scoreboard replacing the original one that had been in existence since the building opened in 1998. Boards Panasonic Live 4HD scores were officially unveiled on September 22, such as AEG and Staples Center executives, as well as player representatives from Clippers (Craig Smith), Kings (Matt Greene), and Lakers (Sasha Vujacic) in hand for presentations.
