History

Walt Disney, Inc. (WDI) was formed by Walt Disney on December 16, 1952 with an engineering division assigned to design Disneyland. In light of Roy's objections and those of potential shareholders, WDI has been renamed WED Enterprises in 1953 based on Walt's initials. In 1961, WED moved to Grand Central Business Park. The design of the WED Enterprises theme park and the architectural group became very integral to Disney studio operations purchased by Disney Productions on February 5, 1965 along with the name WED Enterprises.

The unit was renamed January 1986 to Walt Disney Imagineering. In 1996, Disney Development Company, a subsidiary of Disney real estate development conglomerate, joined in Imagineering.

Imagineering created the Disney Fair, a US travel attraction, which aired in September 1996. With a bad presence, the exhibition was withdrawn after several stops. Disney Entertainment Projects (Asia Pacific), Inc., a new Disney Asia Pacific subsidiary, selected the DisneyFest renamed name as the first project to bring it to Singapore to open there on October 30, 1997.

In 1997, Imagineers were in several buildings at Grand Central Business Park when Disney bought the park. In September 1999, Disney Imagineering announced the redesign of the Grand Central Creative Campus from an industrial park with a new studio complex anchored by Disney Imagineering. Several buildings were destroyed to pave the way for new buildings. Additional space will be for the sound stage, production facilities and offices.

As part of Walt Disney Company's strategic reorganization in March 2018, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts joins Disney Consumer Products and the Interactive Media segment into Walt Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products.

Principles

Imagination is governed by several key principles when developing new concepts and improving existing attractions. Often, new concepts and enhancements are created to meet specific needs. Many solutions to problems are designed in this way, such as ride rides from Soarin 'Over California attractions. The Imagineers know that they want the guests to feel the sensation of flying, but they are not sure how to accomplish the task of loading people onto a ride ride in an efficient way where everyone has an optimal viewing position. Imagineer Mark Sumner invented the Erector set in his attic, and was able to imagine and design a ride vehicle that would effectively simulate a gantole.

Imagination is also known for returning to ideas for attractions and pointing out that, for whatever reason, it never works. These ideas are often reworked and appear in different forms - such as the Museum of the Weird, a proposed wax museum that eventually became the Haunted Mansion.

Finally, there is the principle of "blue sky speculation", a process by which Imagineers produce ideas without restrictions. The habit in Imagineering is to begin the creative process with what is called "eye-wash" - the boldest, wildest, best idea that can come up, presented in detail. Many Imagineers regard this as a true start of the design process and operate under the idea that if it can be dreamed, it can be built.

Imagination is always trying to improve their work - what Walt Disney calls "plussing". He is very confident that "Disneyland will never be finished as long as there is the imagination left in the world", which means there is always room for innovation and improvement.

Ten Ten Commandments Mickey

During the Imagineering workshop in 1991, Marty Sklar (then president of Imagineering) presented ten commands attributed to Mickey Steinberg (vice president of Imagineering). They:

  1. Get to know your audience
  2. Wear your guest shoes (do not forget the human factor; try to enjoy the park from the guest's point of view)
  3. Organize the flow of people and ideas (make sure the story telling experience is organized and logically arranged)
  4. Create "Wienie" (Walt Disney's term for "visual magnets")
  5. Communicate with visual literacy (use dominant colors or shapes or buildings to reinforce themes)
  6. Avoid overload - make turn-on (do not offer too much detail information)
  7. Story one by one (put one 'big idea' at each event so guests leave with a clear understanding of the theme)
  8. Avoid contradictions - keep an identity (avoid irrelevant or conflicting elements, make sure viewers have a clear idea of what is being said)
  9. For every ounce of treatment, give a ton of treat (make use of theme park differences, which encourages active participation, compared to passive entertainment)
  10. Keep it up (do not rest on your laurels or let things down)

Innovation

In 2000, Walt Disney Imagineering has been awarded more than 100 patents in areas such as advanced audio systems, optical fiber, interactive technology, live entertainment, driving systems, and special effects. WDI is responsible for technological advances such as the Circle-Vision 360 Â ° film technique and FastPass virtual queuing system.

Imagineering is probably best known for the development of Audio-Animatronics, a form of robotics for use in gigs and attractions in theme parks that allow Disney to animate objects in three dimensions instead of just two. The idea stems from Disney's interest with the mechanical birds he bought in New Orleans, which eventually led to the development of The Enchanted Tiki Room. The Tiki Room, which features an Audio-Animatronic bird song, was the first to use the technology. The 1964 World Championships featured an Abraham Lincoln Audio-Animatronic figure who actually stood up and delivered a portion of the Gettysburg Address (which had just passed a hundred years at the time) for the "Great Moment with Lord Lincoln" exhibit, the first person of the Audio-Animatronic People.

Today, Audio-Animatronics is prominently featured in many of Disney's most popular attractions, including Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, The Hall of Presidents, Bear Jamboree Country, Star Tours - The Adventures Continue, and Muppet * Vision 3D. Guests also have the opportunity to interact with several Audio-Animatronic characters, such as Lucky the Dinosaur, WALL-E, and Remy from Ratatouille . The next wave of Audio-Animatronic development focuses on a truly independent figure, or "Autonomatronics." Otto, the first Autonomatronic figure, can see, hear, feel the presence and emotion of a person, and have a conversation.

The Art of the Show

Over the years, Imagineering has assembled a variety of retail stores, galleries and hotels designed to be experienced and to create and maintain a certain atmosphere - for example, the atmosphere of Disney's Contemporary Resort can be called "futuristic optimism of halo," and it is clearly seen given the structure of A - resort frames, futuristic building techniques, a modern deck, and monorails glide quietly through the lobby every few minutes. Together, these details combine to tell the story of the hotel.

Imagineering is a form of storytelling, and visiting a Disney park is like entering a show. The vast theme, atmosphere, and attention to detail are the hallmarks of the Disney experience. The atmosphere is different and identifiable, the story is clarified with details and props. Pirates of the Caribbean evokes a "pirate adventure," according to Imagineering John Hench's legend, while the Disney Cruise Line ships create an elegant cruise scene. Even the shops and restaurants inside the theme park told the story. Every detail is carefully considered, from menu to dish name to Cast Member costume. Disney parks are meant to be experienced through all the senses - for example, as guests walk on Main Street, USA, they tend to smell the freshly baked cookies, the little details that enhance the story of the turn of the century, the small town of America.

The Disney theme of the amusement park is often told visually, and Imagineers designed the guest experience in what they call "The Art of The Show." Hench likes to compare theme park designs to filmmaking and often uses film-making techniques in Disney parks, such as forced perspectives techniques. One of the most dramatic examples of perspectives imposed on Disney Parks is Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. The architectural element scale is much smaller at the top of the castle than the foundation, making it look taller than the actual height of 189 feet.

Theme park project

Since the beginning of 1952, Walt Disney Imagineering has created twelve theme parks, a city, four cruise ships, dozens of resort hotels, water parks, shopping centers, sports complexes and other entertainment venues. Outside the theme park, a total reshuffle of the Disney Store was planned in 2009 with the help of Steve Jobs from Apple. Disney hopes to move away from traditional retail models and head to more than an interactive entertainment center.

At the 2009 D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Disney confirmed Fantasyland's expansion plans for Magic Kingdom. Some aspects of improvement are open since 2012 and completed in 2013, showcasing the Seven Dwarf Mine Train and Princess Fairytale Hall. The expansion, which doubles the current Fantasyland size, shows a greater focus on Princess Disney. Belle, Ariel, and Snow White all have a special section on the ground where guests can experience highly interactive meet-and-greet sessions of characters in a profound movie environment. There are two new restaurants, a full service Be Our Guest Restaurant in Beast's Castle and Quick-service Gaston's Tavern. The Grotto Ariel area is currently expanded to include a new attraction called The Little Mermaid: The Undersea Ariel Adventure. In the midst of the expansion is a new Seven Dwarf Mine Trail which opened on May 28, 2014, featuring a new travel system that allows the mine wagon to swing back and forth. Snow Scary Adventures has been replaced by Princess Fairytale Hall, where Cinderella, Tiana, Snow White, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Aurora, Mulan, Anna and Elsa meet and greet that opened on September 18, 2013. The expansion also features the updated Dumbo, Flying Elephant , with double guest capacity and an interactive queuing system that will entertain guests as they line up for one of the park's most popular attractions, as well as Goofy's Barnstormer version known as "The Great" Goofini.

Non-theme park projects

The Imagineers have been invoked by many other divisions of The Walt Disney Company as well as contracted by outside companies to design and build structures outside the amusement park.

The first Disney store opened in Glendale, California, near the Imagineering headquarters, and was designed and built by a group of architectural Imagineers. Imagineers has collaborated with Walt Disney Consumer Products on four other occasions for the Disney Store. First, WDI developed the Walt Disney Gallery at Main Place Mall in Santa Ana, California (opened for a short time in the 1990s, alongside the still-operating Disney Store), and then the Roman-themed Disney Store at The Forum Shops at Caesars in Las Vegas. Two other Disney-themed stores opened in San Francisco and New York City, the latter being developed into the World of Disney. After the purchase of the Disney Store by The Children's Place in 2004, Disney developed a more exclusive Disney chain of exciting Disney stores, called World of Disney (see above). Located in Lake Buena Vista, Florida (at Walt Disney World Resort), Anaheim, California (at Disneyland Resort), and New York City (now closed). Each has been designed by Walt Disney Imagineering. The fourth incarnation of the "Disney World" brand arrived at Disney Village at Disneyland Paris in 2012.

Imagineering designed a 24,000 square foot prototype (2,200m 2 ) interactive entertainment center "Club Disney" in Thousand Oaks, California. This was the first of several Disney-based location-based entertainment venues (LBE) mid to late 1990s that finally closed. Other location-based entertainment products designed by Imagineering are DisneyQuest, a high-tech arcade, virtual reality of approximately 80,000 square feet (7,400m 2 ) located at Disney Village (now called as Disney Springs, West Side) in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. DisneyQuest has themed areas called Scores, Browse, Create and Playbacks; DisneyQuest in Chicago no longer exists. Imagineers also oversees the design and construction of Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy for Disney Cruise Lines, as well as environmental and graphic designs for The Disney Cruise Line and Castaway Cay DCL.

Former Imagineering Senior Vice President John Hench designed the "Tower of Nations" for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1960 Winter Olympics, where Walt Disney is the Chairman of the Pageantry Committee.

Imagine galleries and exhibits designed for the Autry Museum of Western Heritage in Los Angeles, California. It also developed Encounter Restaurant, a science fiction redesign in a restaurant hanging over a 135-foot parabolic arch from the Themed Building at Los Angeles International Airport. Imagine an exhibit designed for the Port Discovery children's museum at Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as a "Under the Dec" sound show depicting the last battle of Blackbeard as part of the Pirate and Treasure Museum in St. Louis. St. Augustine, Florida.

Imagine the flight attendant uniforms produced for Northwest Airlines from Claude Montana design in 1989 in part due to the fact that then Northwest CEO Al Checchi was also a board member of The Walt Disney Company. WDI uniforms lasted until 1992.

When Disney buys ABC, The Imagineers overhaul Studio ABC Times Square in New York City. In addition, when Disney bought the California Angels, they changed the name of the team to Anaheim Angels, and Walt Disney Imagineering and HOK Sport renovated Anaheim Anaheim's 30-year-old Anaheim Stadium, adding modern facilities.

Imagineering works with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) to help create teaser videos and stories, as well as the theme of the FIRST 2016 Robot Competition, FIRST Stronghold.

Company location

Since the 1960s, Imagineering headquarters is located in uncluttered office buildings at the former Grand Central Airport in Glendale, California, about two miles (3.2 km) east of Disney company headquarters and studios in Burbank.
