Melco Crown Takeover

Game operator Melco Crown Entertainment took control of the long-delayed Macau Studio City project by buying 60 percent of the Cotai resort developer. Melco announced a deal on June 16, 2011 morning and co-chairman Lawrence Ho Yau Lung said at a press conference will invest USD 1.7 billion (MOP 13.7 billion) in development.

On January 12, 2015, the Melco chairman announced that the Studio City resort will open around "mid-year" 2015, adding 1,600 hotel rooms and 400 gambling tables aimed at the Cotai Strip. Inspired by Hollywood, the cinematic-themed resort consists of a 30,000-square-foot Family Entertainment Center that works with Time Warner Inc., Warner Bros and DC Comics. Highlighted in the opening ceremony, the entertainment center will feature popular DC Comics characters, such as Superman, Wonder Woman and The Flash. Visitors will be taken on Batman's virtual reality trip in the resort, as well as a 130-meter-high Ferris wheel.

Dispute game facility

Macau Secretary for Transport and Public Works Lau Si Io confirmed on July 6, 2011 that there will be no gaming facilities in Macau Studio City project. The secretary reiterated that the Cotai property developer is required to comply with the 2008 government-approved development plan. The plan, he reiterated, included a major component of the film production facility but should not contain game elements. But Melco Crown Entertainment is confident that Macao Studio City will receive the necessary government approval to include the gambling floor. The company's chief executive and co-chairman Lawrence Ho Yau Lung said he was confident of a deal with the SAR Government to build a casino on the site.
