Histori

Sony Online Entertainment started with Sony Interactive Studios America (SISA), a Sony internal game development studio, formed in 1995. In 1996, John Smedley was responsible for the development of SISA from an online role video game. This game will evolve into the EverQuest MMORPG . Smedley hired programmers Brad McQuaid and Steve Clover, who had come to the attention of Smedley through their work in a single role-play Warwizard game.

In April 1998, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) was formed by combining part of Sony Online Ventures with Sony Pictures Entertainment. In a matter of months after this change, Sony Interactive Studios America changed its name to 989 Studios. Toward the end of 1998, 989 Studios shifted its strategy to make PlayStation games. A corporate video game and a separate branch of online development, originally called RedEye Interactive, and soon after renamed Verant Interactive.

Verant Interactive launched EverQuest on March 16, 1999, via Sony with simple expectations. The game becomes a success. Sales continued to rise at a steady rate until mid-2001 when growth slowed. In 2004, Sony reported the number of subscriptions close to 450,000. In March 2000, Verant released EverQuest: The Ruins of Kunark , the first in a long list of expansion packs for Everquest .

In April 2000, Verant hired former Ultima Online developers Raph Koster and Rich Vogel. They formed an office in Austin, Texas, to develop Star Wars Galaxies for LucasArts. SOE acquired Verant in June 2000, and eventually promoted Brad McQuaid to become Chief Creative Officer. In October 2001, McQuaid resigned and founded Sigil Games Online, attracting many SOE's original developers EverQuest .

Developed by Sony Online Entertainment, LucasArts released Star Wars Galaxies in 2003, which saw rapid growth, as expected. Bruce Woodcock estimates that Star Wars Galaxies reach nearly 300,000 subscribers a year, before falling behind. LucasArts has released three expansions for Star Wars Galaxies, Jump to Lightspeed in October 2004, Rage of the Wookiees in May 2005, and Exam Of Obi-Wan in November 2005.

In 2003, the company also explored the relatively untouched MMOG region with the massive first-person multiplayer shooter PlanetSide and PlayStation 2 MMORPG EverQuest Online Adventure . PlanetSide enjoys a fairly successful launch, but never attracts widespread popularity. SOE released two expansions for PlanetSide , retail products titled Core Combat , and Aftershock , free expansion. EverQuest Online Adventure was not that successful, but it gave expansion, EverQuest Online Hunting Field . The game closed on March 29, 2012, after nine years of operation.

EverQuest II was released on November 9, 2004. This sequel was created hundreds of years after the original. Similar to EverQuest's SOE strategy, SOE has released several adventure packages and expansion packages for EverQuest II , beginning with The Bloodline Chronicles in March 2005.

In January 2005, Sony Online Entertainment announced the creation of Station Publishing, a new label to distribute titles created by external developers. In November 2005, SOE added New Game Upgrades to Star Wars Galaxies, altering many of the game's core mechanisms. It disappointed the players and critics, with the same player level reduced to about 10,000; relatively little for the MMO industry.

SOE has generated a lot of EverQuest expansion and video game spin-offs, including Champions of Norrath (for PlayStation 2) and Lords of EverQuest (Windows). They released the Champions: Return to Arms, the sequel to the Champions of Norrath , in February 2005. In August 2005, SOE entered into an agreement with Warner Bros.. Entertainment that sees the acquisition and transition from The Matrix Online to the existing state-of-the-art game line.

Players are treated around 2 months of games despite some early setbacks that keep many veteran players unable to access the game for about a week after the announcement was made. Memory books are developed and available for download on the game site.

In May 2010, John Smedley was CEO of Sony Online Entertainment. SOE is headquartered in San Diego, California, with additional game development studios located in Austin, Texas, Denver, Colorado and Seattle, Washington. Therefore, the actions of players within Everquest II affect what is happening in the Fortune League, and Fortune League rewards help users advance in EverQuest II environments. Fastpoint Games CEO Kelly Perdew puts the Fortune League as a new category of "easy to eat" data-based games that will help MMO franchise users gain and hit new revenue streams. On February 1, 2011, SOE launched a new PlayStation Network game that will be released year-round. These include Acceleration of Suguri X Edition Akimi Village , Plants vs. Zombies , Rochard , Sideway and Slam Bolt Scrappers . On December 6, 2011, EverQuest II switched to a free-to-play model, with an optional subscription. On December 15, 2011, Star Wars Galaxies closed. SOE manages Memory Books for former players.

Data violations

On April 27, 2011, Sony, the SOE parent company, released a statement about the disruption, on or about April 18th into the PlayStation Network, and the potential for theft to 77 million personal data. Sony states that PSN and SOE are hosted and run on completely separate subsystems and that PlayStation Network has no major impact on SOE online services. SOE developers post messages of concern and apology, but also assurance that SOE servers and systems are not compromised.

On May 2, 2011, SOE interrupted their online services. Players are being told "We must stop the SOE service temporarily. In our investigation of the disruption into our system we have found a problem that requires considerable attention for us to immediately discontinue the service We will update it today (Monday)." Then, SOE discloses that "personal information of about 24.6 million state-owned accounts may have been stolen", including name, address, phone number, email address, gender, date of birth, login, and password are washed.

Daybreak Game Company

On February 2, 2015, Sony announced that SOE had been sold to investment company Columbus Nova for an undisclosed amount, and it would be renamed to Daybreak Game Company. Cutting its relationship with Sony, Daybreak then became able to develop their games for platforms other than the PlayStation, including the Xbox and mobile platforms. On February 11, company employees reported they were laid off, including some senior developers and project managers. Shortly after, Daybreak responded by announcing a layoff meant to make the company profitable, but did not detail the extent of the layoffs or whether it would affect the development and support of new and existing games. On July 22, 2015, Daybreak announced that John Smedley had resigned as President of the company, and that Russell Shanks, a former COO of the company, would take his place. On August 21, 2015, Smedley left Daybreak to set up a new company. In October 2016, Russell Shanks left Dawn. Ji Ham is the current acting president.

In April 2018, Russian businessman and Columbus Nova owner Viktor Vekselberg, and his portfolio company Renova Group, were approved by the US Treasury as part of a Russian interference investigation in the 2016 US elections. Dawn began denying that it had been sold to Columbus Nova at all ( through a public statement, the removal of a press release mentioning Columbus Nova, and edits to its Wikipedia page returned for being not quoted properly), stating that the Company has actually been acquired by Jason Epstein (via Inception Acquisitions, LLC), who is a partner to Columbus Nova at the time, and also an investor in Harmonix. A spokesman for Daybreak claims that Epstein's exact relationship with Columbus Nova has caused confusion in media reporting of sales, even though its deleted press release made the same claim.
