Lawrence M. Tanenbaum (born 1945) is a Canadian businessman and chairman of Sport Maple Leaf & amp; Entertainment (MLSE). He owns a 25% stake in MLSE through its parent company Kilmer Sports Inc.

Biography

Tanenbaum was born in the Jewish family, Max's son (owner of York Steel) and Anne Tanenbaum. and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Cornell University in 1968.

The family patriarch, Abraham Tanenbaum, left Parczew, Poland, north of Lublin, to New York in 1911. Two friends from Toronto from the same city persuaded Abraham to join them. Shortly after arriving in Toronto, Abraham rode his horse and cart through Toronto's industrial and residential area looking for scrap metal. In 1914, just before the war in Europe, Abraham had saved enough to bring his wife, Chippa Sura, and two young boys Joseph and Max to accompany him in Toronto. Abraham prospered and built the Runnymede Iron and Steel Company into a major steel fabrication company and real estate empire. His son Max, who founded his own company, York Steel, has seven children, among them Larry, who studied economics at Cornell University.

In recognition of his contributions to philanthropy, business and volunteerism, Tanenbaum was appointed as a Canadian Order Official on October 25, 2007. The Canadian order is at the center of the Canadian award system and represents the highest civilian award.

In June 2012, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law, by St. John's College. Michael at the University of Toronto.

Tanenbaum currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Kilmer Van Nostrand Co. Limited, after serving as President & amp; CEO from 1968 to 2000. Under his direction Kilmer evolved into a multi-faceted civil engineering construction company whose operations division and subsidiaries include road and paving construction, ready-mix concrete, aggregate, heavy construction, truck manufacture and pipe manufacturing. Heavy construction operations include projects in Canada, the United States and South America and are specialized in building subways, improving transit systems, bridges and tunnels including the design of elevated transport systems in the Toronto Zoo, the elevated transit system in Miami and the subway in Caracas, Atlanta, Calgary and Toronto. In 1984 this unit merged with Canadian Foundation Company Ltd. who later joined Bannister International. From that time until December 2000, Kilmer road construction, paving and aggregate operations were carried out through a wholly owned subsidiary of Kilmer, The Warren Paving & amp; Material Group Limited. Tanenbaum served as Chairman of Warren, which, until merger with Lafarge North America, is Canada's largest paving and aggregate company with operations serving approximately 54 communities. Warren's activities also include large commercial aggregate operations, liquid asphalt trade and road distribution and maintenance. In December 2000, Warren merged into Lafarge North America Inc., North America's largest diversified building materials company and supplier of cement, aggregate and concrete, and other materials for residential, commercial, institutional and public works construction in the United States and Canada. As a result of this merger, Kilmer became a significant shareholder in Lafarge NA, and Tanenbaum served on the Board and chaired his Finance Committee until the 2006 purchase by Lafarge SA. Kilmer today manages infrastructure investment through the Kilmer Brownfield LP Equity Fund, Quickload CEF Inc., Host Kilmer Service Centers Inc. (ONROute), and DundeeKilmer (PanAm Village Development).

From 1975 to 1994, Tanenbaum served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of CUC Broadcasting Limited where Kilmer was a significant shareholder. At the time of its sale in 1994 CUC was the fifth largest cable company in Canada. CUC is also a key participant in the introduction of cable television in the UK. Other operations include paging, publishing, satellite, and radio broadcasting.

Tanenbaum has had a longstanding interest in sports and entertainment and for that in 1991 he pioneered efforts to bring the NBA franchise to Toronto. In 1996, interest was gained at the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club and the arena. In 1998 Tanenbaum was an active force in the acquisition of the Toronto Raptors basketball team and the Air Canada Center, which, with Toronto Maple Leafs, formed Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which by 2015 he owns 25% of via Kilmer. Tanenbaum is the Chair of the MLSE, and is a Governor and serves on the NHL (Toronto Maple Leafs), NBA (Toronto Raptors), and Major League Soccer (Toronto FC) Executive Committees. He is a member of the Board and Hall of Fame Hockey Executive Committee in Toronto, Ontario. On May 20, 2015 it was announced that Kilmer had acquired a stake in Toronto Argonauts in partnership with Bell Media. Argonaut is then sold to MLSE.

Kilmer also has significant investments in other sport related entities, including Insight Sports Ltd, which is a leading sports media company involved in the manufacture, production and broadcasting, across all platforms, sports and related lifestyle content. Sports Insights holds equity positions in certain Canadian television services including The NHL Network and owns and/or operates World Fishing Network (WFN) and Game TV.

In addition, Tanenbaum serves as Chairman of Kilmer Capital Partners, a private equity investment fund, which provides equity capital for small to medium-sized companies, and is dedicated to building leading companies in partnership with management. Kilmer Capital's portfolio includes Algorithme Pharma Inc., Coalision, Atelka, English Bay Enterprises Inc. and Compact Power.

Tanenbaum served as Chairman of the Canadian Liberal National Income during Prime Minister Paul Martin's term. He currently serves as a member of the Ontario Investment and Trade Advisory Board and advisory board member, Toronto Trade Council. He has recently served as a member of the Advisory Committee, the Toronto Prosperity Initiative, and as a member of the Toronto City Independent Fiscal Panels, and the Toronto Municipal Mayor's Economic Competitiveness Advisory Committee.

Tanenbaum's involvement in the Community Association includes the following: Vice Chairman, Board of Directors, Mount Sinai Hospital - tertiary care education hospital associated with the University of Toronto; Co-Chairman of the Research Council for the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute; Member, Board of Directors, Canadian Brain; Member, University Board, Cornell University; Member, Advisory Board, Baycrest Center for Geriatric Treatment; Advisory Board Member, Montreal Neurological Institute; Member, Advisory Board of Dean, Schulich Business School, University of York; Board Member Founder, Right to Play; Founding Member, Israeli Center and Jewish Affairs; and Co-Chair, Tomorrow Campaign (UJA).

He is married, and has two daughters and one son.
