History

Disney Regional Entertainment was formed in 1996 to develop a local-based entertainment concept. Soon after the purchase of Capital Cities/ABC Inc., which owns 80% of ESPN, Disney CEO Michael D. Eisner is moving forward with his idea of having local entertainment based on the Disney brand in the metropolitan and suburban areas. Eisner chose Art Levitt, formerly resort vice president and special project Disney Parks and Resorts, then CEO of Hard Rock Cafe International. As vice president of Disney Parks and Resorts' specialty resort and specialty projects, Levitt is responsible for Pleasure Island, Disney Village Marketplace and Disney Village Resort and spearheaded the initial plan for ESPN Club, which was originally conceptualized as ESPN Zone.

Some concepts are placed in the planning stages. Club Disney was first launched on February 21, 1997 at Westlake Promenade in Thousand Oaks, Califorina with others in Southern California opened later that year.

On June 19, 1998, Disney Regional Entertainment opened its first DisneyQuest, location-based entertainment venue, at Downtown Disney West Side at Walt Disney World. The company opened its first ESPN Zone on July 11, 1998 at the Power Station in Inner Harbor, Baltimore.

On August 28, 1998, Disney Regional announced an expansion for the Disney Club for late 1998 and 1999. In December 1998, Disney Regional Entertainment moved with several other units to Walt Disney Attractions.

The first DisneyQuest outside a resort opened in Chicago on June 16, 1999 with plans for more locations around the world. In October 1999, Disney announced that the Club chain would be closed on the last day of their operation on November 1, 1999. On September 4, 2001, DisneyQuest Chicago was closed leaving only the remaining Disney World locations.

The ESPN zone lasts longer than other chains. As the chain was closed on June 16, 2010 with five locations while the other two continued to operate by other companies, AEG and Business Zone. With remaining ESPN Zone transfers to other companies, Disney Regional Entertainment is closed. On July 3, 2017, the DisneyQuest final was closed at Disney Springs to be destroyed for the NBA Experience.
