In 1987, Banks landed his first acting role, appearing as a minor character in the Date with an Angel fantasy-comedy.

The banks hit him big when he developed (and starred) a one-man theater show entitled Home Entertainment Center - a comedy game about an easily distracted delinquent trying to keep up with the deadline. He gave 440 shows at the Home Entertainment Center in places like the Canon Theater, the Pasadena Playhouse, the Marines Memorial Theater, and The One Act in San Francisco (where the show lasts for eleven months). For her performance, she was awarded the LA Weekly Theater Award, four Drama-Logue Awards, and three San Francisco Bay Area Critique Awards. He also performed at the Comedy Aspen festival, Cast Theater, Callboard Theater, and Las Palmas Theater.

In 1989 the Home Entertainment Center achieved national fame when it was filmed and broadcasted at the Performing Time; filming was done at the Marine Memorial Theater. The show features original songs written and performed by the Bank. On May 14, 1989, he appeared (with Penn Jillette) on the Dr. radio program. Demento (especially Mother's Day of the year) and featured a number of songs directly.

His next fame made him a TV pilot at Showtime in January 1991 - The Steven Banks Show (sometimes referred to inaccurate as The Steven Brooks Show). The plot is almost the same as the one-off drama: Banks portray Steven Brooks - a non-achieving defender, fascinated by the trivial and cursed things with a tendency to comedy songs.

In the summer of 1991 after Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Reubens was arrested for allegedly masturbating in adult theaters, the Bank was among a number of entertainers protesting against CBS's decision to drop the Reubens from their ranks. Banks can be seen in the crowd of demonstrators on the LA road on E! True Hollywood Story episode of Reubens capture. Reubens was then offered (and rejected) a supporting role on the recently-launched TV program.

Showtime aired the pilot for the Banks show, but never performed another episode. In 1994, PBS took an interest in his actions. They filmed and aired the Steven Banks Show that summer - the first original sitcom ever produced and run by PBS. Brandon Tartikoff produced the show, filmed at WYES in New Orleans. The CD album for the show was also released, consisting of original songs written and performed by the Bank. Thirteen performances were recorded and the program received critical acclaim, but one episode of "Miss Janie Regrets" was not aired due to controversy over parodies of children's shows such as PBS. The bank's show has achieved some sort of short-term cult status on PBS. At one show, Penn Jillette sang and played guitar, Teller on keyboard, joined Steven Banks. The song was "I wore the clothes of the dead," whose arrangement was that Penn wore clothes bought on property sales.

Banks have appeared on TV and in features like Beverly Hills Cop III , Dharma & amp; The King of Hill , Dream On , Caroline in Town , The Jimmy Kimmel Show >, Parks and Recreation , Mom , My Formerly Crazy Girlfriend
