Histori

Sejarah awal

Universal Music was once the record company attached to Universal Pictures movie studio. The origins of the company returned to the establishment of the American branch of Decca Records in September 1934. The Decca Record Co Ltd of England spun American Decca off in 1939. MCA Inc. joined American Decca in 1962.

In November 1990, Japanese multinational conglomerate Matsushita Electric agreed to acquire a MCA worth US $ 6.59 billion. In 1995, Seagram acquired 80% of MCA from Matsushita. On December 9, 1996, the company was renamed Universal Studios, Inc., and its music division was renamed Universal Music Group; MCA Records continues as a label in Universal Music Group. In May 1998, Seagram purchased PolyGram and merged it with Universal Music Group in early 1999.

Between 1995 and 2000, music companies were found to have artificially inflated compact disc prices through the use of illegal marketing practices such as advertised minimum prices, doing so to end price wars beginning in the early 1990s by savers such as Best Buy and Target. The settlements in 2002 included music publishers and distributors; Sony Music, Warner Music, Bertelsmann Music Group, EMI Music and Universal Music Group. In the restitution for pricing, they agreed to pay a $ 67.4 million fine and distribute $ 75.7 million in CDs to public and nonprofit groups but admitted there were no mistakes. It is estimated that suppliers/customers are overcharged by nearly $ 500 million and up to $ 5 per album as opposed to evidence of buying and selling interest.

Vivendi's subsidiary

With Universal Studios' acquisition of General Electric in 2004 and joining GE NBC, Universal Music Group was deployed under the separate management of eponymous film studios. This is the second time the music company did that, the first being the separation of Time Warner and Warner Music Group. In February 2006, the label became 100% owned by French media conglomerate Vivendi when Vivendi bought the last 20% of Matsushita. On June 25, 2007, Vivendi completed a $ 1.63 billion ($ 2.4 billion) purchase from BMG Music Publishing, after receiving approval from the European Union, after announcing its acquisition on September 6, 2006.

In May 2007, UMG was accused of abusing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to quell criticism, forcing YouTube to remove some videos containing UMG music. Finally, UMG revoked its claim after being challenged by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. In the same year, UMG was accused of using the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to indiscriminately remove content related to Prince's artists, especially the twenty-nine-second video where a child danced to one of Prince's songs. In April 2016, UMG had the audio turned off from a video clip showing Katherine Jenkins singing the British national anthem. They claim that "God Save the Queen" is a copyrighted song, and YouTube originally complied with this request, but later allowed the video to be viewed with the original audio track.

In May 2006, an investigation led by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer concluded with the determination that Universal Music Group bribed radio stations to play songs from Ashlee Simpson, Brian McKnight, Big Tymers, Nick Lachey, Lindsay Lohan, and other artists under Universal label. The company pays $ 12 million to the state in the settlement.

In December 2007, UMG announced an agreement with Imeem that allows social network users to listen to any song from the Universal catalog for free with some ads generated by music shared with record labels. Two weeks after the deal was announced, Michael Robertson speculated on the terms of the deal's secrets and argued that in the end this was a bad deal to redeem. This speculation leads to a fire fight on Pho's digital media email list because imeem representatives denied his claim and dismissed his theory as unfounded. All traffic is transferred to MySpace after the company acquired Imeem on December 8, 2009.

purchase of 2010 and EMI

Doug Morris resigned from his position as CEO on January 1, 2011. Former Universal Music International chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge was promoted to CEO of the company. Grainge then succeeded him as chairman on March 9, 2011. Morris became Sony Music Entertainment's next chairman on July 1, 2011. With the appointment of Grainge as CEO at UMG, Max Hole was promoted to COO UMGI, effective July 1, 2010. Starting in 2011 UMG's Interscope Geffen A & amp; M Records will sign a contestant of the Idol Idol /Idi series . In March 2011, Barry Weiss became chairman and CEO of The Island Def Jam Music Group and Universal Republic Records. Both companies were restructured under Weiss. In December 2011, David Foster was appointed Chair of the Verve Music Group.

In 2011, EMI sold recordings of its music operations to Universal Music Group for £ 1.2 billion ($ 1.9 billion) and its music publishing operation to a Sony-led consortium of $ 2.2 billion. Among the other companies that compete for the music recording business is Warner Music Group which is reported to have made a bid of $ 2 billion. IMPALA opposes merger. In March 2012, the EU opened an investigation into the acquisition. The EU asked rivals and consumer groups whether the deal would result in higher prices and close competitors. By coincidence, UMG sister company StudioCanal has had EMI Films library for several years.

On December 9, 2011, Megaupload published a music video entitled "The Mega Song", featuring artists including Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, and will.i.am who supported the company. Music videos are also uploaded to YouTube, but deleted after a removal request by UMG. Megaupload says that the video does not contain infringing content, commenting: "We have signed an agreement with every featured artist for this campaign." Megaupload requested an apology from UMG, and filed a lawsuit against the company in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California on December 12, 2011. UMG rejected that the removal was ordered under the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and said that the abolition " UMG-YouTube ", which grants UMG" the right to block or remove a user posted video through the YouTube CMS (Content Management System) based on a set of contractually determined criteria. " The video was later reverted to YouTube, with the reason for the elimination of UMG remains unclear. The lawyers for will.i.am originally stated that he never approved of the project, and on December 12, he denied any involvement in the revocation notice.

On September 21, 2012, EMI sales to UMG were approved in Europe and the United States by the European Commission and Federal Trade Commission respectively. However, the European Commission approved the agreement only under the conditions of the combined company releasing a third of its total operations to another company with a "proven track record in the music industry". UMG Unleashes Mute Recordings, Parlophone, Roxy Recording, MPS Recording, Music Cooperative, Now That's What I Call Music !, Jazzland, Universal Greece, Sanctuary Records, Chrysalis Records, EMI Classics, Virgin Classics, and EMI European regional labels to comply with this condition. UMG retained the Beatles (formerly of Parlophone) and Robbie Williams (formerly of Chrysalis) The Beatles catalog was moved to the newly formed UMG Calderstone Productions, while the Williams catalog was transferred to Island Records.

2012-present: EMI integration and reorganization division

Universal Music Group completed their acquisition of EMI on September 28, 2012. In November 2012, Steve Barnett was appointed chairman & amp; CEO of Capitol Music Group. He previously served as COO of Columbia Records. In fulfilling the requirements of the European Commission after the purchase of EMI, Universal Music Group sold the silent catalog to the German-based BMG Rights Management on December 22, 2012. Two months later, BMG acquired Sanctuary Records for nearly EUR50 million.

On November 8, 2012, Universal Music and Hewlett-Packard launched a marketing operation: with connected HP Music computers, customers can access music from Universal artists, as well as exclusive content.

On February 8, 2013, Warner Music Group acquired the Parlophone Label Group (comprising Parlophone Records, Chrysalis Records, EMI Classics, Virgin Classics, and EMI Records' Belgium, Czech, Denmark, France, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Slovakia, and Sweden. ) for $ 765 million (£ 487 million). In April 2013, Universal Music Greece (excluding Nana Mouskouri) was sold to Victoras Antippas, who was renamed the Cobalt Music company. Edel AG obtained the Universal MPS catalog in January 2014.

On March 20, 2013, UMG announced a worldwide extension of their exclusive distribution deal with Disney Music Group, excluding Japan and Russia. As a result of this agreement the DMG labels and artists have access to UMG lists of multiplatinum producers and multiplatinum songwriters and Grammy Award winners around the world. The exclusive deal also sees UMG granting unlimited access to all rights related to back-sound catalogs and 85-year-old Disney albums.

On April 2, 2013, the gospel music division of Motown Records and EMI merged to form a new label called Motown Gospel. In May 2013, Japanese company SoftBank offered US $ 8.5 billion to Vivendi for the acquisition of UMG, but Vivendi rejected it. On November 14, 2013, Universal Music will now distribute Warner Music Group releases in the Middle East as a result of the integration of EMI branches in the region.

On April 1, 2014, Universal Music announced the dissolution of Island Def Jam Music, one of four operational umbrella groups within Universal Music. Universal CEO Lucian Grainge said about the closure, "No matter how much we work to build 'IDJ' as a brand, the brand will never be as strong as every part of IDJ constituency." Effective on the day of the announcement, Island Records and Def Jam will now operate as an autonomous record label. David Massey and Bartels, each of whom work on Island and Def Jam Records, will lead an independent record label independently. Barry Weiss who previously moved from Sony Music to head up Island Def Jam Music in 2012 when Motown Records entered into Island Def Jam has resigned from Universal Music. In addition, as part of the changes on the label, Motown Records will be transferred to Los Angeles to become part of the Capitol Music Group - formerly Ethiopian Vice President Habtemariam promoted to President Label for Motown Records. Republic Records now operate independently while Interscope Geffen A & amp; M remains unchanged.

In August 2017, UMG and Grace/Beyond agreed to develop three new music-based television series, 27 , Melody Island and Mixtape . 27 will focus on musicians at the age of 27, the age at which some iconic musicians die. Melody Island is an animated series based on exciting tropical island music with a direct craft segment.
