Histori

West Edmonton Mall first opened its doors to the public on September 15, 1981. The mall was developed in four phases, completed in 1981, 1983, 1985 and 1999. It was the largest indoor shopping center in the world until 2004, and was named in Guinness Book of Records. Four phase constructs are used in color coded systems as a guide to find stores and attractions. Mindbender indoor roller coaster suffered a fatal accident on June 14, 1986 when one of the rear cars slipped off the track and crashed into a concrete pillar nearby. Three people were killed and one was injured in the crash.

On July 11, 2004, the mall suffered millions of dollars in damage when severe rainstorms and rain caused roofs to collapse and waterways overflowed. The Ice Palace and its surrounding areas are the most damaged, and the World Waterpark has an abundance of water. The damage was immediately fixed.

Oilers' contract to use the arena has ended. This arena is used for a variety of hockey and other sports tournaments. In 2015, the Ice Palace was renamed the Toyota Mayfield Ice Palace after the mall sold the naming rights to local car dealerships.

During special events, such as Memorial Day, the ice rink is covered with a cloth for the ceremony to be held on it. In 2017, West Edmonton Mall announced that Mayfield Toyota Ice Palace will get a $ 3 million renovation. Because of this, it is closed for the summer and reopened in December 2017.

Next development

In 2002, the City of Edmonton approved plans for the mall to expand with an additional 30,000 square meters (320,000 sq./ht.) Of retail space, sports facilities, trade shows and conventions, 12-storey office buildings, and 600-ounce apartment buildings, plenty of parking. However, none of these projects have started development except for the expansion of the parking lot completed by the Rec Room. A number of large shopping centers, all larger than the West Edmonton Mall, are being built in China, and retail centers in Beijing have evacuated West Edmonton Mall as the world's largest. The SM Mall of Asia, located in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines, has also surpassed the gross floor size of the mall by 36,000 square meters (390,000 sq., Ft). By 2017, however, the mall remains the largest in North America.

The anchor stores that are expected to arrive in 2018-2021 are Nordstrom at Sears, and Winners/Homesense and Buybuy Baby at the old Target.

Controversy

West Edmonton Mall became the object of controversy in 2011 when, after arresting a woman for unauthorized entry, their security staff were caught on a video that allegedly assaulted her. A judge has agreed to release the video after the allegation against the woman was dismissed.

In February 2015, the al-Shabaab jihadist terrorist group released a propaganda video calling for attacks on West Edmonton Mall and other Western shopping centers. Although the group has until now never launched an attack in North America, security at the mall is tightened in response. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police also pointed out that there is no evidence of impending threats. Some artificial/drill locks occur after a threat.

West Edmonton Mall Transit Center is the main transit point on the south side of West Edmonton Mall, outside the mall entrance 48. The bus uses transit centers in and out of 87 Avenue. Large transitional shelters in transit centers can be accessed and equipped with electric doors. The transit center has a vending machine and a payphone but no parking & amp; rise, public toilets, or drop off areas. The transit center is served by Edmonton Transit System (ETS) and St. Albert Transit (StAT).

$ 3 million in upgrades to transit centers was completed in June 2017 and included new hot water reservoirs (twice the size of previous shelters), new sidewalks, new lighting, and new public art installations, among other changes.
