In-car entertainment ( ICE ), or in-vehicle infotainment ( IVI ), is a collection of hardware and devices in-car software that provides audio or video entertainment. In car entertainment comes from car audio systems consisting of radio and cassette or CD players, and now includes automotive navigation systems, video players, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, Carputer, in-car internet and WiFi. Once controlled by simple buttons and dash buttons, the ICE system can include both steering audio control and handsfree voice control.

Driven by demand for more connected vehicles, in-car entertainment is getting more sophisticated. Car makers, electronics and software suppliers, as well as newcomers from Silicon Valley (like Google and Apple), work together and also compete to come up with a user friendly and safe to use infotainment system. The ICE system is increasingly common with newer vehicle models and some car makers have developed their own systems: Ford with SYNC and MyFord Touch, Toyota with Entune, Cadillac with CUE (Cadillac User Experience), FCA with Uconnect, etc.
With the mass adoption of smartphones worldwide, a new problem arises: the use of connected devices in cars. According to a 2015 survey conducted by AT & T with a sample of over 2,000 US respondents, "7-in-10 people engage in smart phone activity while driving" including social media (40%), web search (30%) and even video chat (10%). This raises security concerns related to distraction and also encourages the automobile industry to integrate these devices in a safe way. "Traditional" car makers are increasingly relying on software and electronic expertise from car suppliers and technology companies to help them design the system. Google and Apple's mobile OS 'make the most of the market, the two technology companies have developed a projection mode (Android Auto, Apple CarPlay) to allow mobile devices to operate in vehicles through the dashboard head unit so passenger vehicles do not manipulate their devices directly, using their interface know, and spend more time with their eyes on the road.

Security issues
Policies on in-car entertainment systems are less developed than mobile phone use laws regarding similar disruptions in cars. In the United States, 10 states, D.C., Guam, and the Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using mobile phones while driving. In addition, 39 countries, D.C., Guam, and the Virgin Islands prohibit text messages for all drivers. However, some states have developed laws to limit content that the driver can see in the in-car entertainment system.
However, researchers began analyzing the potential impact of impaired drivers on the road. Charlie Klauer, a researcher at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, said that drivers who see the screen have a higher risk of falling. Furthermore, the risk of collisions increases exponentially the longer a driver takes his eyes off the road.
Automotive companies such as Ford and Audi argue that they have tested and revised their latest system to reduce the amount of time riders spend away from the road.
Security worries
Because car infotainment systems can access more and more vehicle functions (eg via the CAN bus), concerns have also been voiced about the potential for remote car hacking (see wire drives).
