History

The Promenade at the Howard Hughes Center opened in 2000. Originally featuring The Bridge Cinema De Lux, a luxury cinema with IMAX screens, several restaurants including Johnny Rockets, Islands, On The Border, Subway and Starbucks, plus Nordstrom Rack, and Borders Books and Music. The cinema was eventually purchased by Rave Cinemas and operated under the Rave flag until it was one of 32 locations purchased by Cinemark in 2012, but the theater still retains the Rave logo until 2015 when it was renovated into one of Cinemark's cinema theaters, 18 display, some featuring Cinemark XD. The center is popular around its opening but over the years lost in popularity due to its proximity to Westfield Culver City, and lost several major tenants including Borders which closed in 2011 due to chain liquidation, and Nordstrom Rack who moved to Westfield Culver City in 2013. On The Border closed and replaced by Souplantation until closing in 2017. However, it managed to attract new tenants to fill some empty spaces including Buffalo Wild Wings, Dave & Busters, and Kabuki Japanese Restaurant. Laurus Corp. acquired the Howard Hughes Center, including The Promenade, by 2015. Laurus announced plans for large-scale residential expansions, renovations and improvements designed by the Jerde Partnership.

The center is part of the 70-acre Howard Hughes Center business campus (280,000 m 2 ), which includes office buildings for mixed use, retail, and health care tenants. Neighbors include the Pepperdine University satellite campus, and corporate centers such as Universal Studios, Univision, and Sony.
