An alternative newspaper is a type of newspaper that keeps comprehensive coverage of the general news that supports stylish reporting, reviews and columns of opinion, investigations of edgy topics and magazine-style stories highlighting people- people and local culture. The coverage is more locally focused and the target audience is younger than the daily newspaper. Typically, alternative newspapers are published in tabloid format and printed on newsprint. Other names for such publications include alternative weekly , alternate news every week , and alt weekly , as the majority circulate on weekly schedules.

Most metropolitan areas in the United States and Canada are home to at least one alternative paper. These papers are commonly found in urban areas, although some publish in smaller towns, in rural or exurban areas where they can be referred to as alt monthly due to less frequent publication schedules.

Alternate papers usually operate under different business models of daily papers. Most alternative papers, such as Stranger , Houston Press , SF Weekly , Village Voice , New York Press , Metro Times , LA Weekly , Boise Weekly , and Long Island Press , for free , earn revenue through the sale of advertising space. Sometimes they include ads for adult entertainment, such as adult bookstores and strip clubs, which are banned in many major daily newspapers. They usually include a comprehensive section of advertising and classified ads and a list of events as well.

Many alternative papers show the "best" edition of annual, business profiles selected by readers as the best of their kind in the area. Often these letters send certificates that businesses hang on their walls or windows. This further strengthens the paper's relationship with local businesses.

Alternative newspapers represent a more commercialized and mainstream evolution of the underground press associated with the 1960s. Their focus remains on art and entertainment and social and political reportage. Editorial positions on alternative weeks are mostly leaning to the left, though there are conservative contingents, and libertarians, alt-weeklies. Style varies sharply among alternative newspapers; some affect the satirical tone, ironically, while others use an easier approach to reporting.

Columns are generally syndicated to alternative weekly including "The Straight Dope," and Savage's "Savage Love," Rob Breszny "Free Will Astrology," and Ben Tausig's cross puzzle "Ink Well." Unique, non-mainstream comics, such as Matt Groening Life in Hell , Lynda Barry Ernie Pook's Comeek , Ruben Bolling's Dancing Bug Ted Rall politics is also common.

The Village Voice , based in New York City, is one of the first and most famous examples of its form.

Association of Alternative Newsmedia is a weekly weekly trade association. The Alternative Weekly Network and the Ruxton Group are the national advertising sales representatives for alternative weekly.

Chain and merger

Some alternative newspapers are independent. However, partly due to the increasing concentration of media ownership, many are bought or launched by larger media conglomerates. The Tribune Company, a multibillion dollar company that owns the Chicago Tribune, has four alternative New England weeks, including Hartford Advocate and New Haven Advocate.

Creative Loafing , originally just a weekly alternative based in Atlanta, grew to Creative Loafing, Inc. which has newspapers in three other southern US cities, as well as Chicago Reader and Washington City Paper .

Village Voice Media and New Times Media joined in 2006; before that, they are the two biggest chains.

The Village Voice Media pra-merger, hasil dari Village Voice di New York City, termasuk LA Weekly , OC Weekly , Seattle Weekly , Minneapolis City Pages , dan Nashville Scene .

New Times Media termasuk pada saat penggabungan Cleveland Scene , Dallas Observer , Westword , East Bay Express , New Times Broward-Palm Beach , Houston Press , The Pitch , Miami New Times , Phoenix New Times , SF Weekly , dan Riverfront Times .

In 2003, the two companies signed a non-competition agreement stating that they would not publish in the same market. Therefore, New Times Media eliminates the New Times LA , competitors from Village Voice Media LA Weekly , and Village Voice Media stopped publishing the Cleveland Free Times competitor for New Times Media Cleveland Scene . The US Department of Justice launched an antitrust investigation into the agreement. This case was settled out of court with both companies agreeing to provide the assets and title of the publication of a paper that did not work for a potential competitor. The Cleveland Free Times reopened its publication in 2003 under the Kildysart LLC publication group, while New Orleans LA assets were sold to Southland Publishing and relaunched as LA CityBeat.

On October 24, 2005, New Times Media announced an agreement to acquire Village Voice Media, creating a chain of 17 free weekly newspapers across the country with a combined circulation of 1.8 million and controlling a quarter of the weekly circulation of alternative weekly newspapers in the North America. The agreement was approved by the Department of Justice and, on January 31, 2006, the companies merged into one, taking the name of Village Voice Media.

Phoenix Media/Communications Group, the owner of Boston's popular weekly Boston Phoenix, expanded to Providence, Rhode Island in 1988 with their purchase of NewPaper , renamed Providence Phoenix . In 1999, PM/CG expanded further through New England to Portland, Maine with the creation of Portland Phoenix . From 1992 to 2005, PM/GC owns and operates the Worcester Phoenix in Worcester, Massachusetts, but PM/GC folds the branch because of the diminishing Worcester art scene.
